1 D opo queste cose, il re Assuero promosse Haman, figlio di Hammedatha, l'Agaghita, lo elevò in dignità e pose il suo seggio al di sopra di quelli di tutti i principi che erano con lui.

¶ After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman, the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, and advanced him and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.

2 T utti i servi del re che stavano alla porta del re si inchinavano e si prostravano davanti a Haman, perché così aveva ordinato il re nei suoi confronti. Ma Mardocheo non si inchinava né si prostrava.

And all the king’s slaves that were in the king’s gate, knelt down and worshipped Haman, for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai did not kneel or worship before him.

3 A llora i servi del re che stavano alla porta del re dissero a Mardocheo: «Perché trasgredisci l'ordine del re?».

Then the king’s slaves, who were in the king’s gate, said unto Mordecai, Why dost thou pass over the king’s commandment?

4 M a, sebbene glielo ripetessero tutti i giorni, egli non dava loro ascolto; per cui essi riferirono la cosa a Haman, per vedere se Mardocheo avesse persistito nel suo comportamento. Egli aveva infatti loro detto che era giudeo.

Now it came to pass, when they spoke daily unto him, and he did not hearken unto them, that they told Haman to see whether Mordecai’s word would stand; for he had told them that he was a Jew.

5 Q uando Haman vide che Mardocheo non si inchinava né si prostrava davanti a lui, fu pieno d'ira;

And when Haman saw that Mordecai did not kneel or worship before him, then Haman was filled with wrath.

6 m a sdegnò di stendere la sua mano solamente contro Mardocheo, perché gli avevano riferito a quale popolo Mardocheo appartenesse; cosí Haman si propose di distruggere tutti i Giudei, il popolo di Mardocheo, che si trovavano nell'intero regno di Assuero.

And he thought it a small matter to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for now they had declared unto him the people of Mordecai; therefore, Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, the people of Mordecai.

7 I l primo mese, che è il mese di Nisan, il dodicesimo anno del re Assuero, alla presenza di Haman, si gettò il Pur (cioè si tirò la sorte), per stabilire il giorno e il mese; e la sorte cadde sul tredicesimo giorno del dodicesimo mese, che è il mese di Adar.

¶ In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day and from month to month, and the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar was taken.

8 A llora Haman disse al re Assuero: «C'è un popolo disseminato e separato fra i popoli in tutte le province del tuo regno, le cui leggi sono diverse da quelle di ogni altro popolo e che non osserva le leggi del re, il re non ha perciò alcun vantaggio a lasciarli in vita.

And Haman said unto King Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of thy kingdom, and their laws are different from all other people; neither do they observe the king’s laws: therefore, it is not profitable for the king to allow them to remain.

9 S e cosí piace al re, si rediga un decreto, perché vengano distrutti; e io pagherò diecimila talenti d'argento nelle mani di quelli che compiono il lavoro, perché siano versati nei tesori del re».

If it pleases the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed; and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the public works, to bring it into the king’s treasuries.

10 A llora il re si tolse di mano l'anello con il sigillo e lo diede a Hamam l'Agaghita, figlio di Hammedatha e nemico dei Giudei.

And the king took his ring from his hand and gave it unto Haman, the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the Jews’ enemy.

11 Q uindi il re disse a Haman: «Il denaro ti è dato e il popolo pure, fa' di esso ciò che ti pare».

And the king said unto Haman, The silver is given to thee, the people also, to do with them as it seems good to thee.

12 I l tredicesimo giorno del primo mese furono chiamati i segretari del re e fu redatto un decreto, in base a tutto ciò che Haman aveva ordinato, da inviare ai satrapi del re, ai governatori di ogni provincia e ai capi di ogni popolo, a ogni provincia secondo la sua scrittura, e a ogni popolo nella sua lingua. Il decreto fu redatto in nome del re Assuero e sigillato con il sigillo del re

Then the king’s scribes were called on the thirteenth day of the first month, and it was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the king’s lieutenants and to the governors that were over each province and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof and to every people after their language; in the name of King Ahasuerus it was written and sealed with the king’s ring.

13 Q uesti documenti furono mandati per mezzo di corrieri in tutte le province del re, perché si distruggessero, si uccidessero e si sterminassero tutti i Giudei giovani e vecchi, bambini e donne, in un sol giorno, il tredici del dodicesimo mese, che è il mese di Adar e si dessero al saccheggio i loro beni.

And the letters were sent by posts into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey.

14 U na copia del decreto doveva essere emanato come legge in ogni provincia e promulgato per tutti i popoli, perché si tenessero pronti per quel giorno.

The copy of the writing was to be given as law in every province that it be published unto all the peoples, that they should be ready against that day.

15 I corrieri partirono in tutta fretta per ordine del re, e il decreto fu promulgato nella cittadella di Susa. Il re e Haman sedevano a bere, ma la città di Susa era costernata.

The posts went out in haste by the king’s commandment, and the law was given in Shushan, the palace. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Shushan was perplexed.
