1 ¶ Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the rights, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you that ye might do them in the land into which ye go to inherit it

Voici les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que l'Éternel, votre Dieu, a commandé de vous enseigner, afin que vous les mettiez en pratique dans le pays dont vous allez prendre possession;

2 t hat thou might fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou and thy son and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life and that thy days may be prolonged.

afin que tu craignes l'Éternel, ton Dieu, en observant, tous les jours de ta vie, toi, ton fils, et le fils de ton fils, toutes ses lois et tous ses commandements que je te prescris, et afin que tes jours soient prolongés.

3 H ear, therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it that it may be well with thee and that ye may be multiplied exceedingly (as the LORD God of thy fathers has said unto thee) in the land that flows with milk and honey.

Tu les écouteras donc, Israël, et tu auras soin de les mettre en pratique, afin que tu sois heureux et que vous multipliiez beaucoup, comme te l'a dit l'Éternel, le Dieu de tes pères, en te promettant un pays où coulent le lait et le miel.

4 ¶ Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD.

Écoute, Israël! l'Éternel, notre Dieu, est le seul Éternel.

5 A nd thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart and with all thy soul and with all thy might.

Tu aimeras l'Éternel, ton Dieu, de tout ton coeur, de toute ton âme et de toute ta force.

6 A nd these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart,

Et ces commandements, que je te donne aujourd'hui, seront dans ton coeur.

7 a nd thou shalt repeat them diligently unto thy sons and shalt talk of them being in thy house and walking by the way, lying down in bed, and rising up;

Tu les inculqueras à tes enfants, et tu en parleras quand tu seras dans ta maison, quand tu iras en voyage, quand tu te coucheras et quand tu te lèveras.

8 a nd thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thy eyes;

Tu les lieras comme un signe sur tes mains, et ils seront comme des fronteaux entre tes yeux.

9 a nd thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house and on thy gates.

Tu les écriras sur les poteaux de ta maison et sur tes portes.

10 A nd it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give it unto thee: great and goodly cities, which thou didst not build,

L'Éternel, ton Dieu, te fera entrer dans le pays qu'il a juré à tes pères, à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, de te donner. Tu posséderas de grandes et bonnes villes que tu n'as point bâties,

11 a nd houses full of all good things, which thou didst not fill, and hewn out wells, which thou didst not dig, vineyards and olive trees, which thou didst not plant; when thou shalt have eaten and be full,

des maisons qui sont pleines de toutes sortes de biens et que tu n'as point remplies, des citernes creusées que tu n'as point creusées, des vignes et des oliviers que tu n'as point plantés.

12 t hen beware lest thou forget the LORD, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.

Lorsque tu mangeras et te rassasieras, garde-toi d'oublier l'Éternel, qui t'a fait sortir du pays d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude.

13 T hou shalt fear the LORD thy God and serve him and shalt swear by his name.

Tu craindras l'Éternel, ton Dieu, tu le serviras, et tu jureras par son nom.

14 Y e shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the peoples who are round about you

Vous n'irez point après d'autres dieux, d'entre les dieux des peuples qui sont autour de vous;

15 ( for the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you) lest peradventure the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

car l'Éternel, ton Dieu, est un Dieu jaloux au milieu de toi. La colère de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, s'enflammerait contre toi, et il t'exterminerait de dessus la terre.

16 Y e shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

Vous ne tenterez point l'Éternel, votre Dieu, comme vous l'avez tenté à Massa.

17 ¶ Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God and his testimonies and his statutes, which he has commanded thee.

Mais vous observerez les commandements de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, ses ordonnances et ses lois qu'il vous a prescrites.

18 A nd thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD that it may be well with thee and that thou may enter in and inherit the good land which the LORD swore unto thy fathers

Tu feras ce qui est droit et ce qui est bien aux yeux de l'Éternel, afin que tu sois heureux, et que tu entres en possession du bon pays que l'Éternel a juré à tes pères de te donner,

19 s o that he will cast out all thine enemies from before thy presence, as the LORD has spoken.

après qu'il aura chassé tous tes ennemis devant toi, comme l'Éternel l'a dit.

20 A nd when tomorrow thy son asks thee, saying, What are the testimonies and the statutes and the rights, which the LORD our God has commanded you?

Lorsque ton fils te demandera un jour: Que signifient ces préceptes, ces lois et ces ordonnances, que l'Éternel, notre Dieu, vous a prescrits?

21 T hen thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt, and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand;

tu diras à ton fils: Nous étions esclaves de Pharaon en Égypte, et l'Éternel nous a fait sortir de l'Égypte par sa main puissante.

22 a nd the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and sore, in Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes;

L'Éternel a opéré, sous nos yeux, des miracles et des prodiges, grands et désastreux, contre l'Égypte, contre Pharaon et contre toute sa maison;

23 a nd he brought us out from there that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he swore unto our fathers.

et il nous a fait sortir de là, pour nous amener dans le pays qu'il avait juré à nos pères de nous donner.

24 A nd the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes that we might fear the LORD our God for our good always that he might give us life, as it is at this day.

L'Éternel nous a commandé de mettre en pratique toutes ces lois, et de craindre l'Éternel, notre Dieu, afin que nous fussions toujours heureux, et qu'il nous conservât la vie, comme il le fait aujourd'hui.

25 A nd we shall have justice when we keep ourselves by doing all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us.

Nous aurons la justice en partage, si nous mettons soigneusement en pratique tous ces commandements devant l'Éternel, notre Dieu, comme il nous l'a ordonné.
