1 ¶ And David spoke the words of this song unto the LORD in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies and out of the hand of Saul.

David adressa à l'Éternel les paroles de ce cantique, lorsque l'Éternel l'eut délivré de la main de tous ses ennemis et de la main de Saül.

2 ¶ And he said, The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.

Il dit: L'Éternel est mon rocher, ma forteresse, mon libérateur.

3 G od is my Strong One; in him will I trust: he is my shield and the horn of my saving health; my defence and my refuge; my saviour, who shall save me from violence.

Dieu est mon rocher, où je trouve un abri, Mon bouclier et la force qui me sauve, Ma haute retraite et mon refuge. O mon Sauveur! tu me garantis de la violence.

4 I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies.

Je m'écrie: Loué soit l'Éternel! Et je suis délivré de mes ennemis.

5 W hen the waves of death compassed me, the floods of Belial made me afraid;

Car les flots de la mort m'avaient environné, Les torrents de la destruction m'avaient épouvanté;

6 w hen the cords of Sheol compassed me about; the snares of death came before me;

Les liens du sépulcre m'avaient entouré, Les filets de la mort m'avaient surpris.

7 i n my distress I called upon the LORD and cried to my God, who heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry entered into his ears.

Dans ma détresse, j'ai invoqué l'Éternel, J'ai invoqué mon Dieu; De son palais, il a entendu ma voix, Et mon cri est parvenu à ses oreilles.

8 T hen the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of the heavens were moved and shook because he was wroth.

La terre fut ébranlée et trembla, Les fondements des cieux frémirent, Et ils furent ébranlés, parce qu'il était irrité.

9 S moke went up from his nostrils, and fire devoured out of his mouth; coals were kindled by it.

Il s'élevait de la fumée dans ses narines, Et un feu dévorant sortait de sa bouche: Il en jaillissait des charbons embrasés.

10 A nd he lowered the heavens and came down, and darkness was under his feet.

Il abaissa les cieux, et il descendit: Il y avait une épaisse nuée sous ses pieds.

11 A nd he rode upon a cherub and flew; and he appeared upon the wings of the wind.

Il était monté sur un chérubin, et il volait, Il paraissait sur les ailes du vent.

12 H e placed darkness like tabernacles round about him, dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.

Il faisait des ténèbres une tente autour de lui, Il était enveloppé d'amas d'eaux et de sombres nuages.

13 F rom the brightness of his presence, coals of fire were kindled.

De la splendeur qui le précédait S'élançaient des charbons de feu.

14 T he LORD thundered from the heavens, and the most High uttered his voice;

L'Éternel tonna des cieux, Le Très Haut fit retentir sa voix;

15 h e sent out arrows and scattered them; he sent forth lightning, and consumed them.

Il lança des flèches et dispersa mes ennemis, La foudre, et les mit en déroute.

16 T hen the springs of the sea appeared and the foundations of the world were uncovered, at the rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.

Le lit de la mer apparut, Les fondements du monde furent découverts, Par la menace de l'Éternel, Par le bruit du souffle de ses narines.

17 H e extended his hand from above, he took me; he drew me out of the impetuous waters;

Il étendit sa main d'en haut, il me saisit, Il me retira des grandes eaux;

18 h e delivered me from strong enemies, from those that hated me, who were stronger than I.

Il me délivra de mon adversaire puissant, De mes ennemis qui étaient plus forts que moi.

19 T hey came upon me unawares in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my stay.

Ils m'avaient surpris au jour de ma détresse, Mais l'Éternel fut mon appui.

20 H e brought me forth into a large place; he delivered me, because he had put his will in me.

Il m'a mis au large, Il m'a sauvé, parce qu'il m'aime.

21 T he LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has recompensed me.

L'Éternel m'a traité selon ma droiture, Il m'a rendu selon la pureté de mes mains;

22 F or I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God.

Car j'ai observé les voies de l'Éternel, Et je n'ai point été coupable envers mon Dieu.

23 F or I have all his ordinances before me and am attentive to his statutes; I will not depart from them.

Toutes ses ordonnances ont été devant moi, Et je ne me suis point écarté de ses lois.

24 A nd I was perfect before him and have kept myself from my iniquity.

J'ai été sans reproche envers lui, Et je me suis tenu en garde contre mon iniquité.

25 T herefore, the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness before his eyes.

Aussi l'Éternel m'a rendu selon ma droiture, Selon ma pureté devant ses yeux.

26 W ith the merciful thou art good, and with the perfect thou art upright.

Avec celui qui est bon tu te montres bon, Avec l'homme droit tu agis selon ta droiture,

27 W ith the pure thou art pure, and with the perverse thou art an adversary.

Avec celui qui est pur tu te montres pur, Et avec le pervers tu agis selon sa perversité.

28 T hou wilt save the poor in spirit; but thine eyes are upon the haughty that thou may bring them down.

Tu sauves le peuple qui s'humilie, Et de ton regard, tu abaisses les orgueilleux.

29 F or thou art my lamp, O LORD, and the LORD gives light unto my darkness.

Oui, tu es ma lumière, ô Éternel! L'Éternel éclaire mes ténèbres.

30 F or in thee I have run through a troop; with my God I have gone over the walls.

Avec toi je me précipite sur une troupe en armes, Avec mon Dieu je franchis une muraille.

31 A s for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is purified; he is a shield to all those that trust in him.

Les voies de Dieu sont parfaites, La parole de l'Éternel est éprouvée; Il est un bouclier pour tous ceux qui se confient en lui.

32 F or what God is there except the LORD? Or who is a Strong One, except our God?

Car qui est Dieu, si ce n'est l'Éternel? Et qui est un rocher, si ce n'est notre Dieu?

33 G od is he who strengthens me with virtue; he who clears my way;

C'est Dieu qui est ma puissante forteresse, Et qui me conduit dans la voie droite.

34 h e who makes my feet like hinds’ feet, and he who sets me upon my high places;

Il rend mes pieds semblables à ceux des biches, Et il me place sur mes lieux élevés.

35 h e who trains my hands for war and causes my arms to break the bow of bronze.

Il exerce mes mains au combat, Et mes bras tendent l'arc d'airain.

36 T hou hast also given me the shield of thy saving health, and thy meekness has multiplied me.

Tu me donnes le bouclier de ton salut, Et je deviens grand par ta bonté.

37 T hou hast enlarged my steps under me so that my knees did not shake.

Tu élargis le chemin sous mes pas, Et mes pieds ne chancellent point.

38 I have pursued my enemies and destroyed them and did not return until I had consumed them.

Je poursuis mes ennemis, et je les détruis; Je ne reviens pas avant de les avoir anéantis.

39 A nd I consumed them and wounded them, and they did not arise; they are fallen under my feet.

Je les anéantis, je les brise, et ils ne se relèvent plus; Ils tombent sous mes pieds.

40 F or thou hast girded me with strength for the battle; thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.

Tu me ceins de force pour le combat, Tu fais plier sous moi mes adversaires.

41 T hou hast given me the necks of my enemies, of those that hate me, that I might cut them off.

Tu fais tourner le dos à mes ennemis devant moi, Et j'extermine ceux qui me haïssent.

42 T hey looked, but there was no one to save them; even unto the LORD, but he did not answer them.

Ils regardent autour d'eux, et personne pour les sauver! Ils crient à l'Éternel, et il ne leur répond pas!

43 T hen I beat them as small as the dust of the earth; I stamped them as the mire of the street and spread them abroad.

Je les broie comme la poussière de la terre, Je les écrase, je les foule, comme la boue des rues.

44 T hou also hast delivered me from the strivings of peoples; thou hast kept me to be head of the Gentiles; peoples whom I did not know have served me.

Tu me délivres des dissensions de mon peuple; Tu me conserves pour chef des nations; Un peuple que je ne connaissais pas m'est asservi.

45 T he strangers trembled before my command; as soon as they heard, they obeyed me.

Les fils de l'étranger me flattent, Ils m'obéissent au premier ordre.

46 T he strangers withered away and trembled in their close places.

Les fils de l'étranger sont en défaillance, Ils tremblent hors de leurs forteresses.

47 T he LORD lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God who is the rock of my salvation.

Vive l'Éternel est vivant, et béni soit mon rocher! Que Dieu, le rocher de mon salut, soit exalté,

48 T he God who has given me revenge and who subjects the peoples under me,

Le Dieu qui est mon vengeur, Qui m'assujettit les peuples,

49 w ho brings me forth from among my enemies; thou hast lifted me up on high from among those that rose up against me; thou hast delivered me from the man of violence.

Et qui me fait échapper à mes ennemis! Tu m'élèves au-dessus de mes adversaires, Tu me délivres de l'homme violent.

50 T herefore, I will confess thee among the Gentiles, O LORD, and I will sing unto thy name.

C'est pourquoi je te louerai parmi les nations, ô Éternel! Et je chanterai à la gloire de ton nom.

51 H e who makes great the saving health of his king and shows mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for ever.

Il accorde de grandes délivrances à son roi, Et il fait miséricorde à son oint, A David, et à sa postérité, pour toujours.
