1 ¶ Then Bildad, the Shuhite, answered and said,

Bildad de Schuach prit la parole et dit:

2 H ow long wilt thou speak such things and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?

Jusqu'à quand veux-tu discourir de la sorte, Et les paroles de ta bouche seront-elles un vent impétueux?

3 S hall God pervert that which is right or shall the Almighty pervert justice?

Dieu renverserait-il le droit? Le Tout Puissant renverserait-il la justice?

4 B ecause thy sons sinned against him, he cast them away in the place of their rebellion;

Si tes fils ont péché contre lui, Il les a livrés à leur péché.

5 i f thou would seek God early and make thy supplication to the Almighty,

Mais toi, si tu as recours à Dieu, Si tu implores le Tout Puissant;

6 i f thou wert pure and upright, surely now he would awake upon thee and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.

Si tu es juste et droit, Certainement alors il veillera sur toi, Et rendra le bonheur à ton innocente demeure;

7 I n such a way that thy beginning would have been small, in comparison to the great increase of thy latter.

Ton ancienne prospérité semblera peu de chose, Celle qui t'est réservée sera bien plus grande.

8 ¶ Ask, I pray thee, of the former age, and be willing to enquire of thy fathers regarding them;

Interroge ceux des générations passées, Sois attentif à l'expérience de leurs pères.

9 f or we are but of yesterday and know nothing because our days upon earth are as a shadow.

Car nous sommes d'hier, et nous ne savons rien, Nos jours sur la terre ne sont qu'une ombre.

10 S hall they not teach thee and tell thee and utter these words out of their heart?

Ils t'instruiront, ils te parleront, Ils tireront de leur coeur ces sentences:

11 C an the rush grow up without mire? Can the meadow grow without water?

Le jonc croît-il sans marais? Le roseau croît-il sans humidité?

12 W hilst it is yet in its greenness and not cut down, it withers before any other herb.

Encore vert et sans qu'on le coupe, Il sèche plus vite que toutes les herbes.

13 S o are the paths of all that forget God, and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish.

Ainsi arrive-t-il à tous ceux qui oublient Dieu, Et l'espérance de l'impie périra.

14 F or his hope shall be cut off, and his trust is a spider’s web.

Son assurance est brisée, Son soutien est une toile d'araignée.

15 H e shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand; he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure.

Il s'appuie sur sa maison, et elle n'est pas ferme; Il s'y cramponne, et elle ne résiste pas.

16 L ike a tree, he is green before the sun, and his branches go forth over his garden;

Dans toute sa vigueur, en plein soleil, Il étend ses rameaux sur son jardin,

17 h is roots weave themselves around a spring and secure themselves even in a stony place.

Il entrelace ses racines parmi les pierres, Il pénètre jusque dans les murailles;

18 I f he is uprooted from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee.

L'arrache-t-on du lieu qu'il occupe, Ce lieu le renie: Je ne t'ai point connu!

19 B ehold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth from where he was transplanted, others shall grow.

Telles sont les délices que ses voies lui procurent. Puis sur le même sol d'autres s'élèvent après lui.

20 ¶ Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man; neither will he help the evil doers.

Non, Dieu ne rejette point l'homme intègre, Et il ne protège point les méchants.

21 H e will yet fill thy mouth with laughing and thy lips with shouts of joy.

Il remplira ta bouche de cris de joie, Et tes lèvres de chants d'allégresse.

22 T hose that hate thee shall be clothed with shame, and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought.

Tes ennemis seront couverts de honte; La tente des méchants disparaîtra.
