1 But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in grief.

But I have judged this with myself, not to come back to you in grief.

2 F or if I make you grieve, who is he then that shall make me glad, but the same who is grieved by me?

For if I grieve you, who also it that gladdens me, if not he that is grieved through me?

3 A nd I wrote this same unto you, lest when I came, I should have grief from those of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.

And I have written this very, that coming I may not have grief from those from whom I ought to have joy; trusting in you all that my joy is of you all.

4 F or out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know how much more charity I have towards you.

For out of much tribulation and distress of heart I wrote to you, with many tears; not that ye may be grieved, but that ye may know the love which I have very abundantly towards you.

5 But if any have caused me grief, he has not grieved me, but in part, that I may not put a burden on you all.

But if any one has grieved, he has grieved, not me, but in part (that I may not overcharge ) all of you.

6 S ufficient to such a one is this reprehension, which was inflicted of many.

Sufficient to such a one this rebuke which by the many;

7 S o that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with too much grief.

so that on the contrary ye should rather shew grace and encourage, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with excessive grief.

8 T herefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your charity toward him.

Wherefore I exhort you to assure him of love.

9 F or to this end also I wrote, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye are obedient in all things.

For to this end also I have written, that I might know, by putting you to the test, if as to everything ye are obedient.

10 T o whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also; for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes I forgave it in the person of Christ,

But to whom ye forgive anything, I also; for I also, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, for your sakes in person of Christ;

11 l est Satan should deceive us, for we do not ignore his devices.

that we might not have Satan get an advantage against us, for we are not ignorant of his thoughts.

12 Having come to Troas for the gospel of the Christ, even though a door was opened unto me in the Lord,

Now when I came to Troas for the glad tidings of the Christ, a door also being opened to me in Lord,

13 I had no rest in my spirit because I did not find Titus my brother, but taking my leave of them, I went from there into Macedonia.

I had no rest in my spirit at not finding Titus my brother; but bidding them adieu, I came away to Macedonia.

14 N ow thanks be unto God, who always causes us to triumph in the Christ and makes manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

But thanks to God, who always leads us in triumph in the Christ, and makes manifest the odour of his knowledge through us in every place.

15 F or we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in those that are saved and in those that perish;

For we are a sweet odour of Christ to God, in the saved and in those that perish:

16 t o the one we are the savour of death unto death and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

to the one an odour from death unto death, but to the others an odour from life unto life; and who sufficient for these things?

17 F or we are not as many, false merchandisers of the word of God, but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.

For we do not, as the many, make a trade of the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as of God, before God, we speak in Christ.
