1 ¶ Now when Jacob saw that there was food in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why are ye looking upon one another?

Cuando Jacob vio que en Egipto había alimentos, les dijo a sus hijos: «¿Qué hacen ahí, mirándose unos a otros?»

2 A nd he said, Behold, I have heard that there is food in Egypt; go down there and buy for us from there that we may live, and not die.

Dijo además: «Ha llegado a mis oídos que hay víveres en Egipto. Vayan allá, y compren alimentos para nosotros, para que no muramos sino que sigamos con vida.»

3 A nd Joseph’s ten brethren went down to buy wheat in Egypt.

Los diez hermanos de José se dirigieron a Egipto para comprar trigo;

4 B ut Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure disaster befall him.

pero Jacob no envió con ellos a Benjamín, hermano de José, porque dijo: «No vaya a pasarle algo malo.»

5 A nd the sons of Israel came to buy among those that came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

Como había hambre en la tierra de Canaán, entre los que iban a comprar llegaron los hijos de Israel.

6 A nd Joseph was the lord over the land, and he it was that sold the wheat to all the people of the land; and Joseph’s brethren came and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.

José era el que mandaba en el país, y quien le vendía a toda la gente de esa región, así que cuando llegaron los hermanos de José, se inclinaron ante él de cara al suelo.

7 ¶ And when Joseph saw his brethren, he knew them, but made himself strange unto them and spoke roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Where have you come from? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

Cuando José vio a sus hermanos, los reconoció; pero hizo como que no los conocía, y en tono áspero les dijo: «Y ustedes, ¿de dónde vienen?» Ellos respondieron: «Venimos de la tierra de Canaán, para comprar alimentos.»

8 A nd Joseph knew his brethren but they did not know him.

Y José reconoció a sus hermanos, pero ellos no lo reconocieron.

9 T hen Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

Entonces recordó José los sueños que había tenido acerca de ellos, y les dijo: «Ustedes son espías. Han venido a ver los puntos vulnerables del país.»

10 A nd they said unto him, No, my lord, but to buy food are thy slaves come.

Ellos le respondieron: «De ninguna manera, señor nuestro. Estos siervos tuyos han venido a comprar alimentos.

11 W e are all one man’s sons; we are men of the truth, thy slaves have never been spies.

Todos nosotros somos hijos de un buen hombre. Somos gente honrada, y nunca hemos sido espías.»

12 A nd he said unto them, No, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

Pero José les dijo: «No, sino que han venido a ver los puntos vulnerables del país.»

13 A nd they said, Thy slaves are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.

Ellos respondieron: «Nosotros, tus siervos, somos doce hermanos, hijos de un buen hombre de la tierra de Canaán. Nuestro hermano menor está hoy con nuestro padre, y el otro ya no vive.»

14 A nd Joseph said unto them, That is it that which I spoke unto you, saying, Ye are spies:

Pero José les dijo: «¡Tal como les dije! ¡Ustedes son espías!

15 H ereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth from here unless your youngest brother comes here.

Y con esto van a ser puestos a prueba. Les juro por la vida del faraón, que no van a salir de aquí hasta que su hermano menor venga acá.

16 S end one of you and let him bring your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison that your words may be proved, whether there is any truth in you; or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.

Envíen a uno de ustedes, a que traiga a su hermano; pero ustedes se quedarán presos. Vamos a ver si ustedes dicen la verdad; y si no, ¡por la vida del faraón, que ustedes son espías!»

17 A nd he put them all together into prison for three days.

Y José los puso a todos en la cárcel durante tres días.

18 A nd Joseph said unto them the third day, Do this and live, for I fear God.

Al tercer día, les dijo: «Yo temo a Dios. Hagan esto y vivirán:

19 I f ye are men of the truth, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison; go ye, carry food for the famine of your houses

Si son gente honrada, dejen preso a uno de sus hermanos en la cárcel donde ahora están, y ustedes vayan y lleven alimento a su casa para mitigar el hambre.

20 b ut bring your youngest brother unto me, so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.

Pero tráiganme a su hermano menor para probar sus palabras, y no morirán.» Y ellos lo hicieron así,

21 ¶ And they said one to another, We are truly guilty concerning our brother in that we saw the anguish of his soul when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

pero se decían el uno al otro: «Realmente hemos pecado contra nuestro hermano, pues lo vimos angustiarse y rogarnos, y no le hicimos caso. Por eso nos ha sobrevenido esta angustia.»

22 T hen Reuben answered them, saying, Did I not speak unto you, saying, Do not sin against the young man, and ye would not hear? Therefore, behold, his blood is also required.

Rubén les respondió, y dijo: «¿Acaso no les decía yo, que no pecaran contra el niño? ¡Pero ustedes no me hicieron caso! ¡Y ahora también se nos demanda su sangre!»

23 A nd they did not know that Joseph understood them, for he spoke unto them by an interpreter.

Pero ellos no sabían que José los entendía, porque entre ellos había un intérprete.

24 A nd he turned himself about from them and wept and returned to them again and spoke with them and took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.

Y José se apartó de ellos, y lloró. Después volvió para hablar con ellos, y de entre ellos tomó a Simeón y ante sus ojos lo aprisionó.

25 T hen Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with wheat and to restore each man’s money into his sack and to give them provisions for the way; and thus it was done unto them.

Después mandó José que llenaran sus sacos de trigo, que se les devolviera a cada uno su dinero, poniéndolo en su saco, y que les dieran comida para el camino. Y así se hizo con ellos.

26 A nd they laded their asses with the wheat and departed from there.

Ellos echaron el trigo sobre sus asnos, y se fueron de allí;

27 A nd as one of them opened his sack to give his ass fodder in the inn, he saw his money; for, behold, it was in his sack’s mouth.

pero cuando uno de ellos abrió su saco en el mesón, para dar de comer a su asno, vio que su dinero estaba en la boca de su saco.

28 A nd he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, behold, it is even in my sack. And their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God has done unto us?

Entonces les dijo a sus hermanos: «¡Me devolvieron mi dinero! ¡Miren, está aquí, en mi saco!» El corazón se les salía, y espantados se decían el uno al otro: «¿Qué es lo que nos ha hecho Dios?»

29 ¶ And they came unto Jacob, their father, unto the land of Canaan and told him all that had befallen them, saying,

Cuando llegaron a la tierra de Canaán, le contaron a Jacob, su padre, todo lo que les había sucedido. Le dijeron:

30 T he man, who is the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us and took us for spies of the country.

«Ese hombre, el señor del país, nos habló en tono muy áspero y nos trató como a espías del país.

31 A nd we said unto him, We are men of the truth; we have never been spies.

Nosotros le dijimos “Somos gente honrada, nunca hemos sido espías.

32 W e are twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.

Somos doce hermanos, hijos de nuestro padre; uno ya no vive, y el menor está hoy con nuestro padre en la tierra de Canaán.”

33 A nd the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby I shall know that ye are men of the truth; leave one of your brethren here with me and take food for the famine of your households and go

Entonces ese hombre, el señor del país, nos dijo: “Con esto voy a saber si ustedes son gente honrada: Dejen conmigo a uno de sus hermanos, tomen alimento para el hambre de sus casas, y vayan

34 a nd bring your youngest brother unto me; then I shall know that ye are not spies, but that ye are men of the truth; thus I will deliver you your brother, and ye shall trade in the land.

a traerme a su hermano menor. Así sabré que ustedes no son espías, sino gente honrada. Entonces les devolveré a su hermano, y ustedes podrán hacer negocios en el país.”»

35 A nd it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, each man’s bundle of money was in his sack; and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.

Al momento de vaciar sus sacos, resultó que en el saco de cada uno de ellos estaba la bolsa con su dinero. Cuando ellos y su padre vieron las bolsas con su dinero, sintieron mucho miedo.

36 A nd Jacob, their father, said unto them, Ye have bereaved me of my sons: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away; all these things are upon me.

Pero su padre Jacob les dijo: «Ustedes me están dejando sin hijos. José ya no está con nosotros, ni Simeón tampoco, y ahora van a llevarse a Benjamín. ¡Todo esto va en contra de mí!»

37 A nd Reuben spoke unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I do not bring him to thee; deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.

Entonces Rubén habló con su padre, y le dijo: «Si no te devuelvo a Benjamín, puedes matar a mis dos hijos. Pon a Benjamín en mis manos, y yo te lo devolveré.»

38 A nd he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left; if some disaster should befall him by the way in which ye go, then shall ye bring my gray hairs with sorrow down to Sheol.

Y Jacob dijo: «Mi hijo no irá con ustedes. Su hermano ha muerto, y sólo él ha quedado. Si le pasara algo malo en el camino que van a tomar, harán que mis canas bajen al sepulcro con gran pesar.»
