1 ¶ Am I not an apostle? Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are not ye my work in the Lord?

¿Qué, no soy apóstol? ¿Y acaso no soy libre? ¿Acaso no he visto a Jesús, nuestro Señor? ¿Y no son ustedes el fruto de mi trabajo en el Señor?

2 I f I am not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you, for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

Tal vez otros no me consideren apóstol, pero para ustedes sí lo soy, porque ustedes son el sello de mi apostolado en el Señor.

3 ¶ My answer to those that examine me is this,

Mi defensa contra los que me acusan es la siguiente:

4 D o we not have authority to eat and to drink?

¿Acaso nosotros no tenemos derecho a comer y beber?

5 D o we not have authority to bring with us a sister, a wife, as also the other apostles and as the brothers of the Lord and Cephas?

¿Y acaso no tenemos derecho a traer con nosotros una esposa creyente, como lo hacen los otros apóstoles, y Cefas y los hermanos del Señor?

6 D o only Barnabas and I not have authority to forbear working?

¿O es que sólo Bernabé y yo estamos obligados a trabajar?

7 W ho serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its fruit? or who feeds a flock and does not eat of the milk of the flock?

¿Qué soldado presta servicio a expensas de sus propios recursos? ¿Quién planta una viña y no come de sus uvas? ¿O quién pastorea el rebaño y no bebe de la leche que ordeña?

8 D o I say this only according to men? or does not the law say the same also?

Esto lo digo, no sólo de acuerdo con el punto de vista humano, sino también de acuerdo con la ley.

9 F or it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treads out the grain. Does God take care for oxen?

Porque en la ley de Moisés está escrito: «No pondrás bozal al buey que trilla». ¿Quiere decir esto que Dios se preocupa de los bueyes,

10 O r does he say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that plows should plow in hope, and that he that threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope.

o más bien lo dice por todos nosotros? En realidad, esto se escribió por nosotros; porque tanto el que ara como el que trilla deben hacerlo con la esperanza de recibir su parte de la cosecha.

11 I f we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap material things from you?

Si nosotros sembramos entre ustedes lo espiritual, ¿será mucho pedir que cosechemos de ustedes lo material?

12 I f others are partakers of this authority over you, why not us? Nevertheless we have not used this authority, but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.

Si otros participan de este derecho sobre ustedes, ¡con mayor razón nosotros! Sin embargo, no hemos hecho uso de este derecho, sino que lo toleramos todo, a fin de no presentar ningún obstáculo al evangelio de Cristo.

13 D o ye not know that those who work with sacred things live of the things of the sanctuary? and those who serve at the altar partake of the altar?

¿Acaso no saben ustedes que los que trabajan en el templo, comen del templo; y que los que sirven al altar, participan del altar?

14 E ven so the Lord has ordained that those who preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

Así también el Señor ordenó a los que anuncian el evangelio, que vivan del evangelio.

15 ¶ But I have used none of these things, neither have I written these things that it should be so done unto me; for it were better for me to die than that anyone should make this my glory void.

Pero yo no me he aprovechado de nada de esto, ni tampoco he escrito esto para que se haga así conmigo; porque prefiero morir antes que alguien me despoje de este motivo de orgullo.

16 F or though I preach the gospel, I have no reason to glory, for it is an obligation laid upon me; for woe is me, if I do not preach the gospel!

Pues si anuncio el evangelio, no tengo por qué jactarme, porque ésa es mi misión insoslayable. ¡Ay de mí si no predico el evangelio!

17 F or if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, the stewardship of the gospel is committed unto me.

Así que, si lo hago de buena voluntad, recibiré mi recompensa; pero si lo hago de mala voluntad, no hago más que cumplir con la misión que me ha sido encomendada.

18 W hat reward, then, shall I have? That preaching the gospel, I may make the gospel of the Christ without charge, that I abuse not my authority in the gospel.

¿Cuál es, pues, mi recompensa? La de predicar el evangelio de Cristo de manera gratuita, para no abusar de mi derecho en el evangelio.

19 ¶ Therefore, though I am free regarding everyone, yet I have made myself slave unto all, that I might gain the more.

Porque, aunque soy libre y no dependo de nadie, me he hecho esclavo de todos para ganar al mayor número posible.

20 A nd unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to those that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain those that are under the law;

Entre los judíos me comporto como judío, para ganar a los judíos; y, aunque no estoy sujeto a la ley, entre los que están sujetos a la ley me comporto como si estuviera sujeto a la ley, para ganar a los que están sujetos a la ley.

21 t o those that are without law, as without law (being not without law of God, but under the law of Christ), that I might gain those that are without law.

Entre los que no tienen ley, me comporto como si no tuviera ley, para ganar a los que no tienen ley (aun cuando no estoy libre de la ley de Dios, sino bajo la ley de Cristo).

22 T o the weak I became as weak, that I might gain the weak; I am made all things to everyone, that I might by all means save some.

Entre los débiles me comporto como débil, para ganar a los débiles; me comporto como todos ante todos, para que de todos pueda yo salvar a algunos.

23 A nd this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker together of it.

Y esto lo hago por causa del evangelio, para ser copartícipe de él.

24 ¶ Know ye not that those who run in a race indeed all run, but one receives the prize? So run, that ye may obtain it.

¿Acaso no saben ustedes que, aunque todos corren en el estadio, solamente uno se lleva el premio? Corran, pues, de tal manera que lo obtengan.

25 A nd every man that strives for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown, but we, an incorruptible one.

Todos los que luchan, se abstienen de todo. Ellos lo hacen para recibir una corona corruptible; pero nosotros, para recibir una corona incorruptible.

26 I therefore so run, not as unto an uncertain thing; so I fight, not as one that beats the air;

Así que yo corro y lucho, pero no sin una meta definida; no lo hago como si estuviera golpeando el viento;

27 b ut I keep my body under, and bring it into subjection, lest preaching to others, I myself should become reprobate.

más bien, golpeo mi cuerpo y lo someto a servidumbre, no sea que después de haber predicado a otros yo mismo quede eliminado.
