1 ¶ Then Nahash, the Ammonite, came up and encamped against Jabeshgilead. And all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

Un día, Najás el amonita se dirigió a Jabés de Galaad y la sitió, pero los habitantes de Jabés le propusieron a Najás que, si se aliaba con ellos, se comprometían a servirle.

2 A nd Nahash, the Ammonite, answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

Najás les respondió: «Haré alianza con ustedes, con la condición de que cada uno de ustedes se deje sacar el ojo derecho. Así el pueblo de Israel quedará en vergüenza.»

3 A nd the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers unto all the borders of Israel, and then, if there is no one to save us, we will come out to thee.

Los ancianos de Jabés le dijeron: «Danos siete días para que enviemos mensajeros por todo nuestro territorio. Si nadie sale en nuestra defensa, nos rendiremos a ti.»

4 T hen the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and told the tidings in the ears of the people, and all the people lifted up their voices and wept.

Cuando los mensajeros llegaron a Gabaa de Saúl y le dijeron al pueblo las condiciones de Najás, todos lo lamentaron y se pusieron a llorar.

5 ¶ And, behold, Saul came after the oxen out of the field, and Saul said, What ails the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

Saúl volvía del campo arreando los bueyes, y preguntó: «¿Qué le pasa al pueblo? ¿Por qué llora?» Entonces le dieron el mensaje de los hombres de Jabés.

6 A nd the Spirit of God prospered Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

En cuanto Saúl lo oyó, el espíritu de Dios vino sobre él con poder, y él se llenó de ira.

7 A nd he took a yoke of oxen and hewed them in pieces and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whoever does not come forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

Tomó entonces un par de bueyes, los descuartizó y envió los pedazos por todo el territorio de Israel, con la orden de que los mensajeros dijeran: «Así haremos con los bueyes de los que no sigan a Saúl y a Samuel.» Fue tal el temor que el Señor infundió en el pueblo, que se unieron como un solo hombre.

8 A nd when he numbered them in Bezek, the sons of Israel were three hundred thousand and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

Cuando Saúl les pasó revista en Bezec, los israelitas eran trescientos mil, y los de Judá eran treinta mil,

9 A nd they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, ye shall have salvation. And the messengers came and declared it to the men of Jabesh, and they were glad.

los cuales dijeron a los mensajeros que habían llevado la noticia: «Digan a los de Jabés de Galaad que mañana, cuando el sol comience a calentar, serán liberados.» Cuando los mensajeros anunciaron esto, los habitantes de Jabés se alegraron mucho

10 T herefore the men of Jabesh said, Tomorrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seems good unto you.

y les dijeron a sus enemigos: «Mañana estaremos aquí, para que hagan con nosotros lo que les parezca mejor.»

11 A nd it was so on the next day that Saul put the people in order in three companies, and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day, and it came to pass that those who remained were scattered so that two of them were not left together.

Pero al día siguiente Saúl distribuyó a los soldados en tres batallones que, antes de que amaneciera, cayeron sobre el campamento y, tomando por sorpresa a los amonitas, los hirieron de muerte hasta bien entrado el día. Los pocos que sobrevivieron se dispersaron, sin que siquiera dos de ellos se vieran juntos.

12 ¶ Then the people said unto Samuel, Who were those that said, Shall Saul reign over us? Bring the men, that we may put them to death.

Entonces el pueblo le dijo a Samuel: «¿Dónde están los que dudaban que Saúl sería nuestro rey? ¡Queremos que nos los entreguen, para matarlos!»

13 A nd Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day, for today the LORD has wrought salvation in Israel.

Pero Saúl dijo: «Nadie va a morir hoy, porque el Señor ha traído la salvación a Israel.»

14 T hen Samuel said to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal and renew the kingdom there.

Por su parte, Samuel dijo al pueblo: «Vengan todos, vamos a Gilgal, para renovar el reino.»

15 A nd all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal, and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Y todo el pueblo fue a Gilgal, y allí, ante el Señor, confirmaron a Saúl como rey. Luego ofrecieron al Señor sacrificios y ofrendas de paz, y Saúl y todo el pueblo de Israel hicieron fiesta.
