1 ¶ Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered, and said,

Y RESPONDIO Eliphaz Temanita, y dijo:

2 S hould a wise man utter vain knowledge and fill his belly with the east wind?

¿Si proferirá el sabio vana sabiduría, Y henchirá su vientre de viento solano?

3 S hould he dispute with useless words and with reasons that are not profitable?

¿Disputará con palabras inútiles, Y con razones sin provecho?

4 T hou dost also cast off fear and undermine prayer before God.

Tú también disipas el temor, Y menoscabas la oración delante de Dios.

5 F or thy mouth has declared thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.

Porque tu boca declaró tu iniquidad, Pues has escogido el hablar de los astutos.

6 T hine own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I; thine own lips shall testify against thee.

Tu boca te condenará, y no yo; Y tus labios testificarán contra ti.

7 W ast thou born before Adam? Or wast thou formed before the hills?

¿Naciste tú primero que Adam? ¿O fuiste formado antes que los collados?

8 H ast thou heard the secret of God, that thou dost detain wisdom in thee alone?

¿Oíste tú el secreto de Dios, Que detienes en ti solo la sabiduría?

9 W hat dost thou know that we do not? What dost thou understand, which is not in us?

¿Qué sabes tú que no sepamos? ¿Qué entiendes que no se halle en nosotros?

10 A mong us are also gray hairs; there are also aged men, much elder than thy father.

Entre nosotros también hay cano, también hay viejo Mucho mayor en días que tu padre.

11 A re the consolations of God in such small esteem with thee? Is there by chance any secret thing concerning thee?

¿En tan poco tienes las consolaciones de Dios? ¿Tienes acaso alguna cosa oculta cerca de ti?

12 W hy does thine heart carry thee away, and why do thine eyes blink,

¿Por qué te enajena tu corazón, Y por qué guiñan tus ojos,

13 t hat thou dost reply unto God with thy spirit and bring forth such words out of thy mouth?

Pues haces frente á Dios con tu espíritu, Y sacas tales palabras de tu boca?

14 W hat is man that he should be clean and that he that is born of a woman should be justified?

¿Qué cosa es el hombre para que sea limpio, Y que se justifique el nacido de mujer?

15 B ehold, he puts no trust in his saints, and not even the heavens are clean in his sight.

He aquí que en sus santos no confía, Y ni los cielos son limpios delante de sus ojos:

16 H ow much less the man who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water?

¿Cuánto menos el hombre abominable y vil, Que bebe la iniquidad como agua?

17 ¶ Listen to me and I will show thee and declare unto thee that which I have seen,

Escúchame; yo te mostraré Y te contaré lo que he visto:

18 t hat which the wise men have told us of their fathers and have not hid it,

(Lo que los sabios nos contaron De sus padres, y no lo encubrieron;

19 u nto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

A los cuales solos fué dada la tierra, Y no pasó extraño por medio de ellos:)

20 T he wicked man travails with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden from the violent.

Todos los días del impío, él es atormentado de dolor, Y el número de años es escondido al violento.

21 F earful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.

Estruendos espantosos hay en sus oídos; En la paz le vendrá quien lo asuele.

22 H e will not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is always watching the sword.

El no creerá que ha de volver de las tinieblas, Y está mirando al cuchillo.

23 H e wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness is prepared for him.

Desasosegado á comer siempre, Sabe que le está aparejado día de tinieblas.

24 T ribulation and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

Tribulación y angustia le asombrarán, Y esforzaránse contra él como un rey apercibido para la batalla.

25 B ecause he extended his hand against God and strengthens himself against the Almighty,

Por cuanto él extendió su mano contra Dios, Y se esforzó contra el Todopoderoso,

26 h e shall run him through in the neck, upon the thick shoulder pieces of his shields;

El le acometerá en la cerviz, En lo grueso de las hombreras de sus escudos:

27 f or he covered his face with his fatness and made collops of fat on his flanks;

Porque cubrió su rostro con su gordura, E hizo pliegues sobre los ijares;

28 a nd he dwelt in desolate cities and in houses which no one inhabited, which were in heaps.

Y habitó las ciudades asoladas, Las casas inhabitadas, Que estaban puestas en montones.

29 H e shall not become rich, nor shall his strength be established, neither shall he extend his beauty upon the earth.

No enriquecerá, ni será firme su potencia, Ni extenderá por la tierra su hermosura.

30 H e shall not escape from the darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth he shall perish.

No se escapará de las tinieblas: La llama secará sus ramos, Y con el aliento de su boca perecerá.

31 H e shall not be established; in vanity he shall err; therefore, he shall be changed into vanity.

No confíe el iluso en la vanidad; Porque ella será su recompensa.

32 H e shall be cut off before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

El será cortado antes de su tiempo, Y sus renuevos no reverdecerán.

33 H e shall shake off his sour grapes as the vine and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

El perderá su agraz como la vid, Y derramará su flor como la oliva.

34 F or the congregation of the hypocrites shall be made desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

Porque la sociedad de los hipócritas será asolada, Y fuego consumirá las tiendas de soborno.

35 T hey conceive pain and bring forth iniquity, and their belly meditates deceit.

Concibieron dolor, y parieron iniquidad; Y las entradas de ellos meditan engaño.
