1 B ut all this I have laid unto my heart, so as to clear up the whole of this, that the righteous and the wise, and their works, in the hand of God, neither love nor hatred doth man know, the whole before them.

Deveras a tudo isto apliquei o meu coração, para claramente entender tudo isto: que os justos, e os sábios, e as suas obras, estão nas mãos de Deus; se é amor ou se é ódio, não o sabe o homem; tudo passa perante a sua face.

2 T he whole as to the whole; one event is to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good, and to the clean, and to the unclean, and to him who is sacrificing, and to him who is not sacrificing; as the good, so the sinner, he who is swearing as he who is fearing an oath.

Tudo sucede igualmente a todos: o mesmo sucede ao justo e ao ímpio, ao bom e ao mau, ao puro e ao impuro; assim ao que sacrifica como ao que não sacrifica; assim ao bom como ao pecador; ao que jura como ao que teme o juramento.

3 T his an evil among all that hath been done under the sun, that one event to all, and also the heart of the sons of man is full of evil, and madness in their heart during their life, and after it -- unto the dead.

Este é o mal que há em tudo quanto se faz debaixo do sol: que a todos sucede o mesmo. Também o coração dos filhos dos homens está cheio de maldade; há desvarios no seu coração durante a sua vida, e depois se vão aos mortos.

4 B ut him who is joined unto all the living there is confidence, for to a living dog it better than to the dead lion.

Ora, para aquele que está na companhia dos vivos há esperança; porque melhor é o cão vivo do que o leão morto.

5 F or the living know that they die, and the dead know not anything, and there is no more to them a reward, for their remembrance hath been forgotten.

Pois os vivos sabem que morrerão, mas os mortos não sabem coisa nenhuma, nem tampouco têm eles daí em diante recompensa; porque a sua memória ficou entregue ao esquecimento.

6 T heir love also, their hatred also, their envy also, hath already perished, and they have no more a portion to the age in all that hath been done under the sun.

Tanto o seu amor como o seu ódio e a sua inveja já pereceram; nem têm eles daí em diante parte para sempre em coisa alguma do que se faz debaixo do sol.

7 G o, eat with joy thy bread, and drink with a glad heart thy wine, for already hath God been pleased with thy works.

Vai, pois, come com alegria o teu pão. e bebe o teu vinho com coração contente; pois há muito que Deus se agrada das tuas obras.

8 A t all times let thy garments be white, and let not perfume be lacking on thy head.

Sejam sempre alvas as tuas vestes, e nunca falte o óleo sobre a tua cabeça.

9 S ee life with the wife whom thou hast loved, all the days of the life of thy vanity, that He hath given to thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity, for it thy portion in life, even of thy labour that thou art labouring at under the sun.

Goza a vida com a mulher que amas, todos os dias da tua vida vã, os quais Deus te deu debaixo do sol, todos os dias da tua vida vã; porque este é o teu quinhão nesta vida, e do teu trabalho, que tu fazes debaixo do sol.

10 A ll that thy hand findeth to do, with thy power do, for there is no work, and device, and knowledge, and wisdom in Sheol whither thou art going.

Tudo quanto te vier ã mão para fazer, faze-o conforme as tuas forças; porque no Seol, para onde tu vais, não há obra, nem projeto, nem conhecimento, nem sabedoria alguma.

11 I have turned so as to see under the sun, that not to the swift the race, nor to the mighty the battle, nor even to the wise bread, nor even to the intelligent wealth, nor even to the skilful grace, for time and chance happen with them all.

Observei ainda e vi que debaixo do sol não é dos ligeiros a carreira, nem dos fortes a peleja, nem tampouco dos sábios o pão, nem ainda dos prudentes a riqueza, nem dos entendidos o favor; mas que a ocasião e a sorte ocorrem a todos.

12 F or even man knoweth not his time; as fish that are taken hold of by an evil net, and as birds that are taken hold of by a snare, like these the sons of man snared at an evil time, when it falleth upon them suddenly.

Pois o homem não conhece a sua hora. Como os peixes que se apanham com a rede maligna, e como os passarinhos que se prendem com o laço, assim se enlaçam também os filhos dos homens no mau tempo, quando este lhes sobrevém de repente.

13 T his also I have seen: wisdom under the sun, and it is great to me.

Também vi este exemplo de sabedoria debaixo do sol, que me pareceu grande:

14 A little city, and few men in it, and a great king hath come unto it, and hath surrounded it, and hath built against it great bulwarks;

Houve uma pequena cidade em que havia poucos homens; e veio contra ela um grande rei, e a cercou e levantou contra ela grandes tranqueiras.

15 a nd there hath been found in it a poor wise man, and he hath delivered the city by his wisdom, and men have not remembered that poor man!

Ora, achou-se nela um sábio pobre, que livrou a cidade pela sua sabedoria; contudo ninguém se lembrou mais daquele homem pobre.

16 A nd I said, `Better wisdom than might, and the wisdom of the poor is despised, and his words are not heard.' --

Então disse eu: Melhor é a sabedoria do que a força; todavia a sabedoria do pobre é desprezada, e as suas palavras não são ouvidas.

17 T he words of the wise in quiet are heard, More than the cry of a ruler over fools.

As palavras dos sábios ouvidas em silêncio valem mais do que o clamor de quem governa entre os tolos.

18 B etter wisdom than weapons of conflict, And one sinner destroyeth much good!

Melhor é a sabedoria do que as armas de guerra; mas um só pecador faz grande dano ao bem.
