1 A nd Jehovah answereth Job out of the whirlwind, and saith: --

Depois disso o Senhor respondeu a Jó dum redemoinho, dizendo:

2 W ho this -- darkening counsel, By words without knowledge?

Quem é este que escurece o conselho com palavras sem conhecimento?

3 G ird, I pray thee, as a man, thy loins, And I ask thee, and cause thou Me to know.

Agora cinge os teus lombos, como homem; porque te perguntarei, e tu me responderás.

4 W here wast thou when I founded earth? Declare, if thou hast known understanding.

Onde estavas tu, quando eu lançava os fundamentos da terra? Faze-mo saber, se tens entendimento.

5 W ho placed its measures -- if thou knowest? Or who hath stretched out upon it a line?

Quem lhe fixou as medidas, se é que o sabes? ou quem a mediu com o cordel?

6 O n what have its sockets been sunk? Or who hath cast its corner-stone?

Sobre que foram firmadas as suas bases, ou quem lhe assentou a pedra de esquina,

7 I n the singing together of stars of morning, And all sons of God shout for joy,

quando juntas cantavam as estrelas da manhã, e todos os filhos de Deus bradavam de júbilo?

8 A nd He shutteth up with doors the sea, In its coming forth, from the womb it goeth out.

Ou quem encerrou com portas o mar, quando este rompeu e saiu da madre;

9 I n My making a cloud its clothing, And thick darkness its swaddling band,

quando eu lhe pus nuvens por vestidura, e escuridão por faixas,

10 A nd I measure over it My statute, And place bar and doors,

e lhe tracei limites, pondo-lhe portas e ferrolhos,

11 A nd say, `Hitherto come thou, and add not, And a command is placed On the pride of thy billows.'

e lhe disse: Até aqui virás, porém não mais adiante; e aqui se quebrarão as tuas ondas orgulhosas?

12 H ast thou commanded morning since thy days? Causest thou the dawn to know its place?

Desde que começaram os teus dias, deste tu ordem ã madrugada, ou mostraste ã alva o seu lugar,

13 T o take hold on the skirts of the earth, And the wicked are shaken out of it,

para que agarrasse nas extremidades da terra, e os ímpios fossem sacudidos dela?

14 I t turneth itself as clay of a seal And they station themselves as clothed.

A terra se transforma como o barro sob o selo; e todas as coisas se assinalam como as cores dum vestido.

15 A nd withheld from the wicked is their light, And the arm lifted up is broken.

E dos ímpios é retirada a sua luz, e o braço altivo se quebranta.

16 H ast thou come in to springs of the sea? And in searching the deep Hast thou walked up and down?

Acaso tu entraste até os mananciais do mar, ou passeaste pelos recessos do abismo?

17 R evealed to thee were the gates of death? And the gates of death-shade dost thou see?

Ou foram-te descobertas as portas da morte, ou viste as portas da sombra da morte?

18 T hou hast understanding, Even unto the broad places of earth! Declare -- if thou hast known it all.

Compreendeste a largura da terra? Faze-mo saber, se sabes tudo isso.

19 W here this -- the way light dwelleth? And darkness, where this -- its place?

Onde está o caminho para a morada da luz? E, quanto

20 T hat thou dost take it unto its boundary, And that thou dost understand The paths of its house.

para que

21 T hou hast known -- for then thou art born And the number of thy days many!

De certo tu o sabes, porque já então eras nascido, e porque é grande o número dos teus dias!

22 H ast thou come in unto the treasure of snow? Yea, the treasures of hail dost thou see?

Acaso entraste nos tesouros da neve, e viste os tesouros da saraiva,

23 T hat I have kept back for a time of distress, For a day of conflict and battle.

que eu tenho reservado para o tempo da angústia, para o dia da peleja e da guerra?

24 W here this, the way light is apportioned? It scattereth an east wind over the earth.

Onde está o caminho para o lugar em que se reparte a luz, e se espalha o vento oriental sobre a terra?

25 W ho hath divided for the flood a conduit? And a way for the lightning of the voices?

Quem abriu canais para o aguaceiro, e um caminho para o relâmpago do trovão;

26 T o cause to rain on a land -- no man, A wilderness -- no man in it.

para fazer cair chuva numa terra, onde não há ninguém, e no deserto, em que não há gente;

27 T o satisfy a desolate and waste place, And to cause to shoot up The produce of the tender grass?

para fartar a terra deserta e assolada, e para fazer crescer a tenra relva?

28 H ath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

A chuva porventura tem pai? Ou quem gerou as gotas do orvalho?

29 F rom whose belly came forth the ice? And the hoar-frost of the heavens, Who hath begotten it?

Do ventre de quem saiu o gelo? E quem gerou a geada do céu?

30 A s a stone waters are hidden, And the face of the deep is captured.

Como pedra as águas se endurecem, e a superfície do abismo se congela.

31 D ost thou bind sweet influences of Kimah? Or the attractions of Kesil dost thou open?

Podes atar as cadeias das Plêiades, ou soltar os atilhos do Oriom?

32 D ost thou bring out Mazzaroth in its season? And Aysh for her sons dost thou comfort?

Ou fazer sair as constelações a seu tempo, e guiar a ursa com seus filhos?

33 H ast thou known the statutes of heaven? Or dost thou appoint Its dominion in the earth?

Sabes tu as ordenanças dos céus, ou podes estabelecer o seu domínio sobre a terra?

34 D ost thou lift up to the cloud thy voice, And abundance of water doth cover thee?

Ou podes levantar a tua voz até as nuvens, para que a abundância das águas te cubra?

35 D ost thou send out lightnings, and they go And say unto thee, `Behold us?'

Ou ordenarás aos raios de modo que saiam? Eles te dirão: Eis-nos aqui?

36 W ho hath put in the inward parts wisdom? Or who hath given To the covered part understanding?

Quem pôs sabedoria nas densas nuvens, ou quem deu entendimento ao meteoro?

37 W ho doth number the clouds by wisdom? And the bottles of the heavens, Who doth cause to lie down,

Quem numerará as nuvens pela sabedoria? Ou os odres do céu, quem os esvaziará,

38 I n the hardening of dust into hardness, And clods cleave together?

quando se funde o pó em massa, e se pegam os torrões uns aos outros?

39 D ost thou hunt for a lion prey? And the desire of young lions fulfil?

Podes caçar presa para a leoa, ou satisfazer a fome dos filhos dos leões,

40 W hen they bow down in dens -- Abide in a thicket for a covert?

quando se agacham nos covis, e estão ã espreita nas covas?

41 W ho doth prepare for a raven his provision, When his young ones cry unto God? They wander without food.

Quem prepara ao corvo o seu alimento, quando os seus pintainhos clamam a Deus e andam vagueando, por não terem o que comer?
