1 T hen the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

Depois disso o Senhor respondeu a Jó dum redemoinho, dizendo:

2 W ho is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

Quem é este que escurece o conselho com palavras sem conhecimento?

3 G ird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.

Agora cinge os teus lombos, como homem; porque te perguntarei, e tu me responderás.

4 W here wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

Onde estavas tu, quando eu lançava os fundamentos da terra? Faze-mo saber, se tens entendimento.

5 W ho hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

Quem lhe fixou as medidas, se é que o sabes? ou quem a mediu com o cordel?

6 W hereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

Sobre que foram firmadas as suas bases, ou quem lhe assentou a pedra de esquina,

7 W hen the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

quando juntas cantavam as estrelas da manhã, e todos os filhos de Deus bradavam de júbilo?

8 O r who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

Ou quem encerrou com portas o mar, quando este rompeu e saiu da madre;

9 W hen I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,

quando eu lhe pus nuvens por vestidura, e escuridão por faixas,

10 A nd brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,

e lhe tracei limites, pondo-lhe portas e ferrolhos,

11 A nd said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

e lhe disse: Até aqui virás, porém não mais adiante; e aqui se quebrarão as tuas ondas orgulhosas?

12 H ast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;

Desde que começaram os teus dias, deste tu ordem ã madrugada, ou mostraste ã alva o seu lugar,

13 T hat it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

para que agarrasse nas extremidades da terra, e os ímpios fossem sacudidos dela?

14 I t is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.

A terra se transforma como o barro sob o selo; e todas as coisas se assinalam como as cores dum vestido.

15 A nd from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.

E dos ímpios é retirada a sua luz, e o braço altivo se quebranta.

16 H ast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?

Acaso tu entraste até os mananciais do mar, ou passeaste pelos recessos do abismo?

17 H ave the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?

Ou foram-te descobertas as portas da morte, ou viste as portas da sombra da morte?

18 H ast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.

Compreendeste a largura da terra? Faze-mo saber, se sabes tudo isso.

19 W here is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,

Onde está o caminho para a morada da luz? E, quanto

20 T hat thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?

para que

21 K nowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?

De certo tu o sabes, porque já então eras nascido, e porque é grande o número dos teus dias!

22 H ast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

Acaso entraste nos tesouros da neve, e viste os tesouros da saraiva,

23 W hich I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

que eu tenho reservado para o tempo da angústia, para o dia da peleja e da guerra?

24 B y what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?

Onde está o caminho para o lugar em que se reparte a luz, e se espalha o vento oriental sobre a terra?

25 W ho hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;

Quem abriu canais para o aguaceiro, e um caminho para o relâmpago do trovão;

26 T o cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

para fazer cair chuva numa terra, onde não há ninguém, e no deserto, em que não há gente;

27 T o satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

para fartar a terra deserta e assolada, e para fazer crescer a tenra relva?

28 H ath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

A chuva porventura tem pai? Ou quem gerou as gotas do orvalho?

29 O ut of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?

Do ventre de quem saiu o gelo? E quem gerou a geada do céu?

30 T he waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

Como pedra as águas se endurecem, e a superfície do abismo se congela.

31 C anst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?

Podes atar as cadeias das Plêiades, ou soltar os atilhos do Oriom?

32 C anst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?

Ou fazer sair as constelações a seu tempo, e guiar a ursa com seus filhos?

33 K nowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?

Sabes tu as ordenanças dos céus, ou podes estabelecer o seu domínio sobre a terra?

34 C anst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?

Ou podes levantar a tua voz até as nuvens, para que a abundância das águas te cubra?

35 C anst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are?

Ou ordenarás aos raios de modo que saiam? Eles te dirão: Eis-nos aqui?

36 W ho hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?

Quem pôs sabedoria nas densas nuvens, ou quem deu entendimento ao meteoro?

37 W ho can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,

Quem numerará as nuvens pela sabedoria? Ou os odres do céu, quem os esvaziará,

38 W hen the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?

quando se funde o pó em massa, e se pegam os torrões uns aos outros?

39 W ilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,

Podes caçar presa para a leoa, ou satisfazer a fome dos filhos dos leões,

40 W hen they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?

quando se agacham nos covis, e estão ã espreita nas covas?

41 W ho provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.

Quem prepara ao corvo o seu alimento, quando os seus pintainhos clamam a Deus e andam vagueando, por não terem o que comer?
