1 T hen the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

Und der HERR antwortete Hiob aus dem Wetter und sprach:

2 W ho is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

Wer ist der, der den Ratschluß verdunkelt mit Worten ohne Verstand?

3 G ird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.

Gürte deine Lenden wie ein Mann; ich will dich fragen, lehre mich!

4 W here wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

Wo warst du, da ich die Erde gründete? Sage an, bist du so klug!

5 W ho hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

Weißt du, wer ihr das Maß gesetzt hat oder wer über sie eine Richtschnur gezogen hat?

6 W hereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

Worauf stehen ihre Füße versenkt, oder wer hat ihren Eckstein gelegt,

7 W hen the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

da mich die Morgensterne miteinander lobten und jauchzten alle Kinder Gottes?

8 O r who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

Wer hat das Meer mit Türen verschlossen, da es herausbrach wie aus Mutterleib,

9 W hen I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,

da ich's mit Wolken kleidete und in Dunkel einwickelte wie in Windeln,

10 A nd brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,

da ich ihm den Lauf brach mit meinem Damm und setzte ihm Riegel und Türen

11 A nd said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

und sprach: "Bis hierher sollst du kommen und nicht weiter; hier sollen sich legen deine stolzen Wellen!"?

12 H ast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;

Hast du bei deiner Zeit dem Morgen geboten und der Morgenröte ihren Ort gezeigt,

13 T hat it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

daß sie die Ecken der Erde fasse und die Gottlosen herausgeschüttelt werden?

14 I t is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.

Sie wandelt sich wie Ton unter dem Siegel, und alles steht da wie im Kleide.

15 A nd from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.

Und den Gottlosen wird ihr Licht genommen, und der Arm der Hoffärtigen wird zerbrochen.

16 H ast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?

Bist du in den Grund des Meeres gekommen und in den Fußtapfen der Tiefe gewandelt?

17 H ave the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?

Haben sich dir des Todes Tore je aufgetan, oder hast du gesehen die Tore der Finsternis?

18 H ast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.

Hast du vernommen wie breit die Erde sei? Sage an, weißt du solches alles!

19 W here is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,

Welches ist der Weg, da das Licht wohnt, und welches ist der Finsternis Stätte,

20 T hat thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?

daß du mögest ergründen seine Grenze und merken den Pfad zu seinem Hause?

21 K nowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?

Du weißt es ja; denn zu der Zeit wurdest du geboren, und deiner Tage sind viel.

22 H ast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

Bist du gewesen, da der Schnee her kommt, oder hast du gesehen, wo der Hagel her kommt,

23 W hich I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

die ich habe aufbehalten bis auf die Zeit der Trübsal und auf den Tag des Streites und Krieges?

24 B y what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?

Durch welchen Weg teilt sich das Licht und fährt der Ostwind hin über die Erde?

25 W ho hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;

Wer hat dem Platzregen seinen Lauf ausgeteilt und den Weg dem Blitz und dem Donner

26 T o cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

und läßt regnen aufs Land da niemand ist, in der Wüste, da kein Mensch ist,

27 T o satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

daß er füllt die Einöde und Wildnis und macht das Gras wächst?

28 H ath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

Wer ist des Regens Vater? Wer hat die Tropfen des Taues gezeugt?

29 O ut of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?

Aus wes Leib ist das Eis gegangen, und wer hat den Reif unter dem Himmel gezeugt,

30 T he waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

daß das Wasser verborgen wird wie unter Steinen und die Tiefe oben gefriert?

31 C anst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?

Kannst du die Bande der sieben Sterne zusammenbinden oder das Band des Orion auflösen?

32 C anst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?

Kannst du den Morgenstern hervorbringen zu seiner Zeit oder den Bären am Himmel samt seinen Jungen heraufführen?

33 K nowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?

Weißt du des Himmels Ordnungen, oder bestimmst du seine Herrschaft über die Erde?

34 C anst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?

Kannst du deine Stimme zu der Wolke erheben, daß dich die Menge des Wassers bedecke?

35 C anst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are?

Kannst du die Blitze auslassen, daß sie hinfahren und sprechen zu dir: Hier sind wir?

36 W ho hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?

Wer gibt die Weisheit in das Verborgene? Wer gibt verständige Gedanken?

37 W ho can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,

Wer ist so weise, der die Wolken zählen könnte? Wer kann die Wasserschläuche am Himmel ausschütten,

38 W hen the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?

wenn der Staub begossen wird, daß er zuhauf läuft und die Schollen aneinander kleben?

39 W ilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,

Kannst du der Löwin ihren Raub zu jagen geben und die jungen Löwen sättigen,

40 W hen they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?

wenn sie sich legen in ihre Stätten und ruhen in der Höhle, da sie lauern?

41 W ho provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.

Wer bereitet den Raben die Speise, wenn seine Jungen zu Gott rufen und fliegen irre, weil sie nicht zu essen haben?
