1 A nd Rehoboam goeth to Shechem, for Shechem have all Israel come to cause him to reign.

Roboão foi a Siquém, onde todos os israelitas tinham se reunido para proclamá-lo rei.

2 A nd it cometh to pass, at Jeroboam son of Nebat's -- who in Egypt because he hath fled from the face of Solomon the king -- hearing, that Jeroboam turneth back out of Egypt;

Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, tinha fugido do rei Salomão e estava no Egito. Assim que soube da reunião em Siquém, voltou do Egito.

3 a nd they send and call for him, and Jeroboam cometh in, and all Israel, and speak unto Rehoboam, saying,

E mandaram chamá-lo. Então ele e todo o Israel foram ao encontro de Roboão e disseram:

4 ` Thy father made our yoke sharp, and now, make light of the sharp service of thy father, and of his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we serve thee.'

“Teu pai colocou sobre nós um jugo pesado, mas agora diminui o trabalho árduo e este jugo pesado, e nós te serviremos”.

5 A nd he saith unto them, `Yet three days -- then return ye unto me;' and the people go.

Roboão respondeu: “Voltem a mim daqui a três dias”. E o povo foi embora.

6 A nd king Rehoboam consulteth with the aged men who have been standing before Solomon his father in his being alive, saying, `How are ye counselling to answer this people?'

O rei Roboão perguntou às autoridades que haviam servido ao seu pai Salomão durante a vida dele: “Como vocês me aconselham a responder a este povo?”

7 A nd they speak unto him, saying, `If thou dost become good to this people, and hast been pleased with them, and spoken unto them good words, then they have been to thee servants all the days.'

Eles responderam: “Se hoje fores bom para esse povo, se o agradares e lhe deres resposta favorável, eles sempre serão teus servos”.

8 A nd he forsaketh the counsel of the aged men that they counselled him, and consulteth with the lads who have grown up with him, those standing before him,

Roboão, contudo, rejeitou o conselho que as autoridades de Israel lhe deram e consultou os jovens que haviam crescido com ele e o estavam servindo.

9 a nd he saith unto them, `What are ye counselling, and we answer this people that have spoken unto me, saying, Make light of the yoke that thy father put upon us?'

Perguntou-lhes: “Qual é o conselho de vocês? Como devemos responder a este povo que me diz: ‘Diminui o jugo que teu pai colocou sobre nós’?”

10 A nd the lads who have grown up with him, speak with him, saying, `Thus dost thou say to the people who have spoken unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and thou, make light of our yoke; thus dost thou say unto them, My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father;

Os jovens que haviam crescido com ele responderam: “A este povo que te disse: ‘Teu pai colocou sobre nós um jugo pesado; torna-o mais leve’ — dize: ‘Meu dedo mínimo é mais grosso do que a cintura do meu pai.

11 a nd now, my father laid on you a heavy yoke, and I -- I add unto your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

Pois bem, meu pai lhes impôs um jugo pesado; eu o tornarei ainda mais pesado. Meu pai os castigou com simples chicotes; eu os castigarei com chicotes pontiagudose’”.

12 A nd Jeroboam cometh in, and all the people, unto Rehoboam on the third day, as the king spake, saying, `Return unto me on the third day.'

Três dias depois, Jeroboão e todo o povo voltaram a Roboão, segundo a orientação dada pelo rei: “Voltem a mim daqui a três dias”.

13 A nd the king answereth them sharply, and king Rehoboam forsaketh the counsel of the aged men,

Mas o rei lhes respondeu asperamente. Rejeitando o conselho das autoridades de Israel,

14 a nd speaketh unto them according to the counsel of the lads, saying, `My father made your yoke heavy, and I -- I add unto it; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

seguiu o conselho dos jovens e disse: “Meu pai lhes tornou pesado o jugo; eu o tornarei ainda mais pesado. Meu pai os castigou com simples chicotes; eu os castigarei com chicotes pontiagudos”.

15 A nd the king hath not hearkened unto the people, for the revolution hath been from God, for the sake of Jehovah's establishing His word that He spake by the hand of Abijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam son of Nebat.

E o rei não atendeu o povo, pois esta mudança nos acontecimentos vinha da parte de Deus, para que se cumprisse a palavra que o Senhor havia falado a Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, por meio do silonita Aías.

16 A nd all Israel have seen that the king hath not hearkened to them, and the people send back the king, saying, `What portion have we in David? yea, there is no inheritance in a son of Jesse; each to thy tents, O Israel; now, see thy house -- David,' and all Israel go to their tents.

Quando todo o Israel viu que o rei se recusava a ouvi-lo, respondeu ao rei: “Que temos em comum com Davi? Que temos em comum com o filho de Jessé? Para as suas tendas, ó Israel! Cuide da sua própria casa, ó Davi!” E assim os israelitas foram para as suas casas.

17 A s to the sons of Israel who are dwelling in the cities of Judah -- Rehoboam reigneth over them.

Quanto, porém, aos israelitas que moravam nas cidades de Judá, Roboão continuou como rei deles.

18 A nd king Rehoboam sendeth Hadoram, who over the tribute, and the sons of Israel cast at him stones, and he dieth; and king Rehoboam hath strengthened himself to go up into a chariot to flee to Jerusalem;

O rei Roboão enviou Adonirão, chefe do trabalho forçado, mas todo o Israel o apedrejou até a morte. O rei, contudo, conseguiu subir em sua carruagem e fugir para Jerusalém.

19 a nd Israel transgress against the house of David unto this day.

Desta forma Israel se rebelou contra a dinastia de Davi, e assim permanece até hoje.
