1 A nd the word of Samuel is to all Israel, and Israel goeth out to meet the Philistines for battle, and they encamp by Eben-Ezer, and the Philistines have encamped in Aphek,

E a palavra de Samuel espalhou-se por todo o Israel. Os Filisteus Tomam a Arca Nessa época os israelitas saíram à guerra contra os filisteus. Eles acamparam em Ebenézer, e os filisteus em Afeque.

2 a nd the Philistines set themselves in array to meet Israel, and the battle spreadeth itself, and Israel is smitten before the Philistines, and they smite among the ranks in the field about four thousand men.

Os filisteus dispuseram suas forças em linha para enfrentar Israel, e, intensificando-se o combate, Israel foi derrotado pelos filisteus, que mataram cerca de quatro mil deles no campo de batalha.

3 A nd the people cometh in unto the camp, and the elders of Israel say, `Why hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? we take unto us from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and it cometh into our midst, and He doth save us out of the hand of our enemies.'

Quando os soldados voltaram ao acampamento, as autoridades de Israel perguntaram: “Por que o Senhor deixou que os filisteus nos derrotassem?” E acrescentaram: “Vamos a Siló buscar a arca da aliança do Senhor, para que ele vá conosco e nos salve das mãos de nossos inimigos”.

4 A nd the people sendeth to Shiloh, and they take up thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of Hosts, inhabiting the cherubs, and there two sons of Eli, with the ark of the covenant of God, Hophni and Phinehas.

Então mandaram trazer de Siló a arca da aliança do Senhor dos Exércitos, que tem o seu trono entre os querubins. E os dois filhos de Eli, Hofni e Finéias, acompanharam a arca da aliança de Deus.

5 A nd it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of the covenant of Jehovah unto the camp, that all Israel shout -- a great shout -- and the earth is moved.

Quando a arca da aliança do Senhor entrou no acampamento, todos os israelitas gritaram tão alto que o chão estremeceu.

6 A nd the Philistines hear the noise of the shouting, and say, `What the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews?' and they perceive that the ark of Jehovah hath come in unto the camp.

Os filisteus, ouvindo os gritos, perguntaram: “O que significam todos esses gritos no acampamento dos hebreus?” Quando souberam que a arca do Senhor viera para o acampamento,

7 A nd the Philistines are afraid, for they said, `God hath come in unto the camp;' and they say, `Wo to us, for there hath not been like this heretofore.

os filisteus ficaram com medo e disseram: “Deuses chegaram ao acampamento. Ai de nós! Nunca nos aconteceu uma coisa dessas!

8 W o to us, who doth deliver us out of the hand of these honourable gods? these the gods who are smiting the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.

Ai de nós! Quem nos livrará das mãos desses deuses poderosos? São os deuses que feriram os egípcios com toda espécie de pragas, no deserto.

9 S trengthen yourselves, and become men, O Philistines, lest ye do service to Hebrews, as they have done to you -- then ye have become men, and have fought.'

Sejam fortes, filisteus! Sejam homens, ou vocês se tornarão escravos dos hebreus, assim como eles foram escravos de vocês. Sejam homens e lutem!”

10 A nd the Philistines fight, and Israel is smitten, and they flee each to his tents, and the blow is very great, and there fall of Israel thirty thousand footmen;

Então os filisteus lutaram e Israel foi derrotado; cada homem fugiu para a sua tenda. O massacre foi muito grande: Israel perdeu trinta mil homens de infantaria.

11 a nd the ark of God hath been taken, and the two sons of Eli have died, Hophni and Phinehas.

A arca de Deus foi tomada, e os dois filhos de Eli, Hofni e Finéias, morreram. A Morte de Eli

12 A nd a man of Benjamin runneth out of the ranks, and cometh into Shiloh, on that day, and his long robes rent, and earth on his head;

Naquele mesmo dia um benjamita correu da linha de batalha até Siló, com as roupas rasgadas e terra na cabeça.

13 a nd he cometh in, and lo, Eli is sitting on the throne by the side of the way, watching, for his heart hath been trembling for the ark of God, and the man hath come in to declare in the city, and all the city crieth out.

Quando ele chegou, Eli estava sentado em sua cadeira, ao lado da estrada. Estava preocupado, pois em seu coração temia pela arca de Deus. O homem entrou na cidade, contou o que havia acontecido, e a cidade começou a gritar.

14 A nd Eli heareth the noise of the cry, and saith, `What -- the noise of this tumult!' And the man hasted, and cometh in, and declareth to Eli.

Eli ouviu os gritos e perguntou: “O que significa esse tumulto?” O homem correu para contar tudo a Eli.

15 A nd Eli is a son of ninety and eight years, and his eyes have stood, and he hath not been able to see.

Eli tinha noventa e oito anos de idade e seus olhos estavam imóveis; ele já não conseguia enxergar.

16 A nd the man saith unto Eli, `I he who hath come out of the ranks, and I out of the ranks have fled to-day;' and he saith, `What hath been the matter, my son?'

O homem lhe disse: “Acabei de chegar da linha de batalha; fugi de lá hoje mesmo”. Eli perguntou: “O que aconteceu, meu filho?”

17 A nd he who is bearing tidings answereth and saith, `Israel hath fled before the Philistines, and also a great slaughter hath been among the people, and also thy two sons have died -- Hophni and Phinehas -- and the ark of God hath been captured.'

O mensageiro respondeu: “Israel fugiu dos filisteus, e houve uma grande matança entre os soldados. Também os seus dois filhos, Hofni e Finéias, estão mortos, e a arca de Deus foi tomada”.

18 A nd it cometh to pass, at his mentioning the ark of God, that he falleth from off the throne backward, by the side of the gate, and his neck is broken, and he dieth, for the man old and heavy, and he hath judged Israel forty years.

Quando ele mencionou a arca de Deus, Eli caiu da cadeira para trás, ao lado do portão, quebrou o pescoço, e morreu, pois era velho e pesado. Ele liderou Israel durante quarenta anos.

19 A nd his daughter-in-law, wife of Phinehas, pregnant, about to bear, and she heareth the report of the taking of the ark of God, that her father-in-law and her husband have died, and she boweth, and beareth, for her pains have turned upon her.

Sua nora, a mulher de Finéias, estava grávida e perto de dar à luz. Quando ouviu a notícia de que a arca de Deus havia sido tomada e que seu sogro e seu marido estavam mortos, entrou em trabalho de parto e deu à luz, mas não resistiu às dores do parto.

20 A nd at the time of her death, when the women who are standing by her say, `Fear not, for a son thou hast borne,' she hath not answered, nor set her heart;

Enquanto morria, as mulheres que a ajudavam disseram: “Não se desespere; você teve um menino”. Mas ela não respondeu nem deu atenção.

21 a nd she calleth the youth I-Chabod, saying, `Honour hath removed from Israel,' because of the taking of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

Ela deu ao menino o nome de Icabode, e disse: “A glória se foi de Israel”, porque a arca foi tomada e por causa da morte do sogro e do marido.

22 A nd she saith, `Honour hath removed from Israel, for the ark of God hath been taken.'

E ainda acrescentou: “A glória se foi de Israel, pois a arca de Deus foi tomada”.
