1 M y son, if thou dost accept my sayings, And my commands dost lay up with thee,

2 T o cause thine ear to attend to wisdom, Thou inclinest thy heart to understanding,

3 F or, if for intelligence thou callest, For understanding givest forth thy voice,

se clamar por entendimento e por discernimento gritar bem alto;

4 I f thou dost seek her as silver, And as hid treasures searchest for her,

se procurar a sabedoria como se procura a prata e buscá-la como quem busca um tesouro escondido,

5 T hen understandest thou fear of Jehovah, And knowledge of God thou findest.

então você entenderá o que é temer o Senhor e achará o conhecimento de Deus.

6 F or Jehovah giveth wisdom, From His mouth knowledge and understanding.

Pois o Senhor é quem dá sabedoria; de sua boca procedem o conhecimento e o discernimento.

7 E ven to lay up for the upright substance, A shield for those walking uprightly.

Ele reserva a sensatez para o justo; como um escudo protege quem anda com integridade,

8 T o keep the paths of judgment, And the way of His saints He preserveth.

pois guarda a vereda do justo e protege o caminho de seus fiéis.

9 T hen understandest thou righteousness, And judgment, and uprightness -- every good path.

Então você entenderá o que é justo, direito e certo, e aprenderá os caminhos do bem.

10 F or wisdom cometh into thy heart, And knowledge to thy soul is pleasant,

Pois a sabedoria entrará em seu coração, e o conhecimento será agradável à sua alma.

11 T houghtfulness doth watch over thee, Understanding doth keep thee,

O bom senso o guardará, e o discernimento o protegerá.

12 T o deliver thee from an evil way, From any speaking froward things,

A sabedoria o livrará do caminho dos maus, dos homens de palavras perversas,

13 W ho are forsaking paths of uprightness, To walk in ways of darkness,

que abandonam as veredas retas para andarem por caminhos de trevas,

14 W ho are rejoicing to do evil, They delight in frowardness of the wicked,

têm prazer em fazer o mal, exultam com a maldade dos perversos,

15 W hose paths crooked, Yea, they are perverted in their ways.

andam por veredas tortuosas e no caminho se extraviam.

16 T o deliver thee from the strange woman, From the stranger who hath made smooth her sayings,

Ela também o livrará da mulher imoral, da pervertida que seduz com suas palavras,

17 W ho is forsaking the guide of her youth, And the covenant of her God hath forgotten.

que abandona aquele que desde a juventude foi seu companheiro e ignora a aliança que fez diante de Deus.

18 F or her house hath inclined unto death, And unto Rephaim her paths.

A mulher imoral se dirige para a morte, que é a sua casa, e os seus caminhos levam às sombras.

19 N one going in unto her turn back, Nor do they reach the paths of life.

Os que a procuram jamais voltarão, nem tornarão a encontrar as veredas da vida.

20 T hat thou dost go in the way of the good, And the paths of the righteous dost keep.

A sabedoria o fará andar nos caminhos dos homens de bem e a manter-se nas veredas dos justos.

21 F or the upright do inhabit the earth, And the perfect are left in it,

Pois os justos habitarão na terra, e os íntegros nela permanecerão;

22 A nd the wicked from the earth are cut off, And treacherous dealers plucked out of it!

mas os ímpios serão eliminados da terra, e dela os infiéis serão arrancados.
