1 A nd Job answereth and saith: --

Então Jó respondeu:

2 H ear ye diligently my word, And this is your consolation.

“Escutem com atenção as minhas palavras; seja esse o consolo que vocês haverão de dar-me.

3 B ear with me, and I speak, And after my speaking -- ye may deride.

Suportem-me enquanto eu estiver falando; depois que eu falar poderão zombar de mim.

4 I -- to man my complaint? and if, wherefore May not my temper become short?

“Acaso é dos homens que me queixo? Por que não deveria eu estar impaciente?

5 T urn unto me, and be astonished, And put hand to mouth.

Olhem para mim, e ficarão atônitos; tapem a boca com a mão.

6 Y ea, if I have remembered, then I have been troubled. And my flesh hath taken fright.

Quando penso nisso, fico aterrorizado; todo o meu corpo se põe a tremer.

7 W herefore do the wicked live? They have become old, Yea, they have been mighty in wealth.

Por que vivem os ímpios? Por que chegam à velhice e aumentam seu poder?

8 T heir seed is established, Before their face with them, And their offspring before their eyes.

Eles vêem os seus filhos estabelecidos ao seu redor, e os seus descendentes diante dos seus olhos.

9 T heir houses peace without fear, Nor a rod of God upon them.

Seus lares estão seguros e livres do medo; a vara de Deus não os vem ferir.

10 H is bullock hath eaten corn, and doth not loath. His cow bringeth forth safely, And doth not miscarry.

Seus touros nunca deixam de procriar; suas vacas dão crias e não abortam.

11 T hey send forth as a flock their sucklings, And their children skip,

Eles soltam os seus filhos como um rebanho; seus pequeninos põem-se a dançar.

12 T hey lift up at timbrel and harp, And rejoice at the sound of an organ.

Cantam, acompanhando a música do tamborim e da harpa; alegram-se ao som da flauta.

13 T hey wear out in good their days, And in a moment Sheol go down.

Os ímpios passam a vida na prosperidade e descem à sepultura em paz.

14 A nd they say to God, `Turn aside from us, And the knowledge of Thy ways We have not desired.

Contudo, dizem eles a Deus: ‘Deixa-nos! Não queremos conhecer os teus caminhos.

15 W hat the Mighty One that we serve Him? And what do we profit when we meet with Him?'

Quem é o Todo-poderoso, para que o sirvamos? Que vantagem temos em orar a Deus?’

16 L o, not in their hand their good, (The counsel of the wicked Hath been far from me.)

Mas não depende deles a prosperidade que desfrutam; por isso fico longe do conselho dos ímpios.

17 H ow oft is the lamp of the wicked extinguished, And come on them doth their calamity? Pangs He apportioneth in His anger.

“Pois, quantas vezes a lâmpada dos ímpios se apaga? Quantas vezes a desgraça cai sobre eles, o destino que em sua ira Deus lhes dá?

18 T hey are as straw before wind, And as chaff a hurricane hath stolen away,

Quantas vezes o vento os leva como palha, e o furacão os arrebata como cisco?

19 G od layeth up for his sons his sorrow, He giveth recompense unto him -- and he knoweth.

Dizem que Deus reserva o castigo de um homem para os seus filhos. Que o próprio pai o receba, para que aprenda a lição!

20 H is own eyes see his destruction, And of the wrath of the Mighty he drinketh.

Que os seus próprios olhos vejam a sua ruína; que ele mesmo beba da ira do Todo-poderoso!

21 F or what his delight in his house after him, And the number of his months cut off?

Pois, que lhe importará a família que deixará atrás de si quando chegarem ao fim os meses que lhe foram destinados?

22 T o God doth teach knowledge, And He the high doth judge?

“Haverá alguém que o ensine a conhecer a Deus, uma vez que ele julga até os de mais alta posição?

23 T his dieth in his perfect strength, Wholly at ease and quiet.

Um homem morre em pleno vigor, quando se sentia bem e seguro,

24 H is breasts have been full of milk, And marrow his bones doth moisten.

tendo o corpo bem nutrido e os ossos cheios de tutano.

25 A nd this dieth with a bitter soul, And have not eaten with gladness.

Já outro morre tendo a alma amargurada, sem nada ter desfrutado.

26 T ogether -- on the dust they lie down, And the worm doth cover them over.

Um e outro jazem no pó, ambos cobertos de vermes.

27 L o, I have known your thoughts, And the devices against me ye do wrongfully.

“Sei muito bem o que vocês estão pensando, as suas conspirações contra mim.

28 F or ye say, `Where the house of the noble? And where the tent -- The tabernacles of the wicked?'

‘Onde está agora a casa do grande homem?’, vocês perguntam. ‘Onde a tenda dos ímpios?’

29 H ave ye not asked those passing by the way? And their signs do ye not know?

Vocês nunca fizeram perguntas aos que viajam? Não deram atenção ao que eles contam?

30 T hat to a day of calamity is the wicked spared. To a day of wrath they are brought.

Pois eles dizem que o mau é poupado da calamidade, e que do dia da ira recebe livramento.

31 W ho doth declare to his face his way? And that which he hath done, Who doth give recompence to him?

Quem o acusa, lançando em rosto a sua conduta? Quem lhe retribui o mal que fez?

32 A nd he -- to the graves he is brought. And over the heap a watch is kept.

Pois o levam para o túmulo, e vigiam a sua sepultura.

33 S weet to him have been the clods of the valley, And after him every man he draweth, And before him there is no numbering.

Para ele é macio o terreno do vale; todos o seguem, e uma multidão incontável o precede.

34 A nd how do ye comfort me vanity, And in your answers hath been left trespass?

“Por isso, como podem vocês consolar-me com esses absurdos? O que sobra das suas respostas é pura falsidade!”
