1 B etter a name than good perfume, And the day of death than the day of birth.

O bom nome é melhor do que um perfume finíssimo, e o dia da morte é melhor do que o dia do nascimento.

2 B etter to go unto a house of mourning, Than to go unto a house of banqueting, For that is the end of all men, And the living layeth unto his heart.

É melhor ir a uma casa onde há luto do que a uma casa em festa, pois a morte é o destino de todos; os vivos devem levar isso a sério!

3 B etter sorrow than laughter, For by the sadness of the face the heart becometh better.

A tristeza é melhor do que o riso, porque o rosto triste melhora o coração.

4 T he heart of the wise in a house of mourning, And the heart of fools in a house of mirth.

O coração do sábio está na casa onde há luto, mas o do tolo, na casa da alegria.

5 B etter to hear a rebuke of a wise man, Than a man to hear a song of fools,

É melhor ouvir a repreensão de um sábio do que a canção dos tolos.

6 F or as the noise of thorns under the pot, So the laughter of a fool, even this vanity.

Tal como o estalo de espinhos debaixo da panela, assim é o riso dos tolos. Isso também não faz sentido.

7 S urely oppression maketh the wise mad, And a gift destroyeth the heart.

A opressão transforma o sábio em tolo, e o suborno corrompe o coração.

8 B etter the latter end of a thing than its beginning, Better the patient of spirit, than the haughty of spirit.

O fim das coisas é melhor que o seu início, e o paciente é melhor que o orgulhoso.

9 B e not hasty in thy spirit to be angry, For anger in the bosom of fools resteth.

Não permita que a ira domine depressa o seu espírito, pois a ira se aloja no íntimo dos tolos.

10 S ay not thou, `What was it, That the former days were better than these?' For thou hast not asked wisely of this.

Não diga: “Por que os dias do passado foram melhores que os de hoje?” Pois não é sábio fazer esse tipo de pergunta.

11 W isdom good with an inheritance, And an advantage to those beholding the sun.

A sabedoria, como uma herança, é coisa boa, e beneficia aqueles que vêem o sol.

12 F or wisdom a defense, money a defence, And the advantage of the knowledge of wisdom, She reviveth her possessors.

A sabedoria oferece proteção, como o faz o dinheiro, mas a vantagem do conhecimento é esta: a sabedoria preserva a vida de quem a possui.

13 S ee the work of God, For who is able to make straight that which He made crooked?

Considere o que Deus fez: Quem pode endireitar o que ele fez torto?

14 I n a day of prosperity be in gladness, And in a day of evil consider. Also this over-against that hath God made, To the intent that man doth not find anything after him.

Quando os dias forem bons, aproveite-os bem; mas, quando forem ruins, considere: Deus fez tanto um quanto o outro, para evitar que o homem descubra alguma coisa sobre o seu futuro.

15 T he whole I have considered in the days of my vanity. There is a righteous one perishing in his righteousness, and there is a wrong-doer prolonging in his wrong.

Nesta vida sem sentido eu já vi de tudo: Um justo que morreu apesar da sua justiça, e um ímpio que teve vida longa apesar da sua impiedade.

16 B e not over-righteous, nor show thyself too wise, why art thou desolate?

Não seja excessivamente justo nem demasiadamente sábio; por que destruir-se a si mesmo?

17 D o not much wrong, neither be thou a fool, why dost thou die within thy time?

Não seja demasiadamente ímpio e não seja tolo; por que morrer antes do tempo?

18 g ood that thou dost lay hold on this, and also, from that withdrawest not thy hand, for whoso is fearing God goeth out with them all.

É bom reter uma coisa e não abrir mão da outra, pois quem teme a Deus evitará ambos os extremos.

19 T he wisdom giveth strength to a wise man, more than wealth the rulers who have been in a city.

A sabedoria torna o sábio mais poderoso que uma cidade guardada por dez valentes.

20 B ecause there is not a righteous man on earth that doth good and sinneth not.

Todavia, não há um só justo na terra, ninguém que pratique o bem e nunca peque.

21 A lso to all the words that they speak give not thy heart, that thou hear not thy servant reviling thee.

Não dê atenção a todas as palavras que o povo diz, caso contrário, poderá ouvir o seu próprio servo falando mal de você;

22 F or many times also hath thy heart known that thou thyself also hast reviled others.

pois em seu coração você sabe que muitas vezes você também falou mal de outros.

23 A ll this I have tried by wisdom; I have said, `I am wise,' and it far from me.

Tudo isso eu examinei mediante a sabedoria e disse: Estou decidido a ser sábio; mas isso estava fora do meu alcance.

24 F ar off that which hath been, and deep, deep, who doth find it?

A realidade está bem distante e é muito profunda; quem pode descobri-la?

25 I have turned round, also my heart, to know and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and reason, and to know the wrong of folly, and of foolishness the madness.

Por isso dediquei-me a aprender, a investigar, a buscar a sabedoria e a razão de ser das coisas, para compreender a insensatez da impiedade e a loucura da insensatez.

26 A nd I am finding more bitter than death, the woman whose heart nets and snares, her hands bands; the good before God escapeth from her, but the sinner is captured by her.

Descobri que muito mais amarga que a morte é a mulher que serve de laço, cujo coração é uma armadilha e cujas mãos são correntes. O homem que agrada a Deus escapará dela, mas o pecador ela apanhará.

27 S ee, this I have found, said the Preacher, one to one, to find out the reason

“Veja”, diz o Mestre, “foi isto que descobri: Ao comparar uma coisa com outra para descobrir a sua razão de ser,

28 ( that still my soul had sought, and I had not found), One man, a teacher, I have found, and a woman among all these I have not found.

sim, durante essa minha busca que ainda não terminou, entre mil homens descobri apenas um que julgo digno, mas entre as mulheres não achei uma sequer.

29 S ee, this alone I have found, that God made man upright, and they -- they have sought out many devices.

Assim, cheguei a esta conclusão: Deus fez os homens justos, mas eles foram em busca de muitas intrigas.”
