1 A fter these things hath the king Ahasuerus exalted Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and lifteth him up, and setteth his throne above all the heads who with him,

Después de estos sucesos, el rey Asuero encumbró a Amán hijo de Hamedata el agagueo, y para honrarlo le permitió ocupar un lugar más elevado que el de todos los príncipes que lo acompañaban.

2 a nd all servants of the king, who in the gate of the king, are bowing and doing obeisance to Haman, for so hath the king commanded for him; and Mordecai doth not bow nor do obeisance.

Todos los siervos del rey que estaban a la puerta del rey se arrodillaban y se inclinaban ante Amán, porque el rey así lo había ordenado; pero Mardoqueo no hacía nada de esto.

3 A nd the servants of the king, who in the gate of the king, say to Mordecai, `Wherefore thou transgressing the command of the king?'

Entonces todos esos siervos le preguntaron a Mardoqueo: «¿Por qué transgredes la orden del rey?»

4 A nd it cometh to pass, in their speaking unto him, day by day, and he hath not hearkened unto them, that they declare to Haman, to see whether the words of Mordecai do stand, for he hath declared to them that he a Jew.

Y como todos los días le preguntaban lo mismo, y él no les hacía caso, lo denunciaron ante Amán, para ver si Mardoqueo se mantendría firme en su postura, pues ya él les había hecho saber que era judío.

5 A nd Haman seeth that Mordecai is not bowing and doing obeisance to him, and Haman is full of fury,

Cuando Amán se dio cuenta de que Mardoqueo no se arrodillaba ni se humillaba ante él, se llenó de ira.

6 a nd it is contemptible in his eyes to put forth a hand on Mordecai by himself, for they have declared to him the people of Mordecai, and Haman seeketh to destroy all the Jews who in all the kingdom of Ahasuerus -- the people of Mordecai.

Pero Amán consideró que era muy poco vengarse solamente de Mardoqueo, así que procuró destruir a todos los judíos que había en el reino de Asuero, es decir, al pueblo de Mardoqueo, pues ya le habían informado a qué pueblo pertenecía.

7 I n the first month -- it the month of Nisan -- in the twelfth year of the king Ahasuerus, hath one caused to fall Pur (that the lot) before Haman, from day to day, and from month to month, the twelfth, it the month of Adar.

Corría el mes primero (es decir, el mes de Nisán) del año duodécimo del rey Asuero, cuando le fue echada a Amán su «pur» (es decir, su suerte) para cada día y para cada mes del año; y la suerte le cayó en el mes duodécimo, que es el mes de Adar.

8 A nd Haman saith to the king Ahasuerus, `There is one people scattered and separated among the peoples, in all provinces of thy kingdom, and their laws diverse from all people, and the laws of the king they are not doing, and for the king it is not profitable to suffer them;

Entonces Amán le dijo al rey Asuero: «Hay en tu reino un pueblo que se ha esparcido y distribuido entre todos tus pueblos y provincias. Sus leyes son diferentes a las de todo pueblo, y no acatan las leyes del rey. En nada se beneficia el rey con dejarlos vivir.

9 i f to the king good, let it be written to destroy them, and ten thousand talents of silver I weigh into the hands of those doing the work, to bring in unto the treasuries of the king.'

Si al rey le parece bien, emita un decreto que autorice su destrucción. De mi parte, yo pesaré diez mil talentos de plata a los que manejan el tesoro, para que los ingresen a los tesoros del rey.»

10 A nd the king turneth aside his signet from off his hand, and giveth it to Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, adversary of the Jews;

El rey se quitó su anillo y se lo dio a Amán hijo de Hamedata el agagueo, que era enemigo de los judíos,

11 a nd the king saith to Haman, `The silver is given to thee, and the people, to do with it as good in thine eyes.'

y le dijo: «Puedes quedarte con la plata que me ofreces. Y con ese pueblo, puedes hacer lo que mejor te parezca.»

12 A nd scribes of the king are called, on the first month, on the thirteenth day of it, and it is written according to all that Haman hath commanded, unto lieutenants of the king, and unto the governors who over province and province, and unto the heads of people and people, province and province, according to its writing, and people and people according to its tongue, in the name of the king Ahasuerus it hath been written and sealed with the signet of the king,

El día trece del mismo mes primero fueron llamados los escribanos del rey, y todo lo que les mandó Amán lo escribieron a los sátrapas del rey, a los capitanes que gobernaban cada provincia y a los príncipes de cada pueblo. El escrito se hizo a nombre del rey Asuero, en la escritura y la lengua de cada provincia y cada pueblo, y fue sellado con el anillo real.

13 a nd letters to be sent by the hand of the runners unto all provinces of the king, to cut off, to slay, and to destroy all the Jews, from young even unto old, infant and women, on one day, on the thirteenth of the twelfth month -- it the month of Adar -- and their spoil to seize,

Las cartas enviadas por medio de correos a todas las provincias del rey ordenaban destruir, matar y exterminar a todos los judíos, jóvenes y ancianos, niños y mujeres, y de apoderarse de sus bienes. Todo esto debía hacerse en el día trece del mes duodécimo, que es el mes de Adar.

14 a copy of the writing to be made law in every province and province is revealed to all the peoples, to be ready for this day.

Una copia del escrito entregado por decreto a cada provincia fue publicada en todos los pueblos, a fin de que se prepararan para aquel día.

15 T he runners have gone forth, hastened by the word of the king, and the law hath been given in Shushan the palace, and the king and Haman have sat down to drink, and the city Shushan is perplexed.

El edicto fue dado en Susa capital del reino, y por mandato del rey los correos salieron con toda rapidez. Y mientras el rey y Amán se sentaron a beber, en la ciudad de Susa reinaba el desconcierto.
