1 I n the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, come hath Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and layeth siege against it;

За третього року царювання Йоякима, Юдиного царя, прийшов Навуходоносор, цар вавилонський, до Єрусалиму, та й обліг його.

2 a nd the Lord giveth into his hand Jehoiakim king of Judah, and some of the vessels of the house of God, and he bringeth them in the land of Shinar, the house of his god, and the vessels he hath brought in the treasure-house of his god.

І дав Господь в його руку Йоякима, Юдиного царя, та частину посуду Божого дому, і він вірправив їх до краю вавилонського, до дому свого бога, а посуд відправив до скарбничного дому свого бога.

3 A nd the king saith, to Ashpenaz master of his eunuchs, to bring in out of the sons of Israel, (even of the royal seed, and of the chiefs,)

І сказав цар до Ашпеназа, начальника його евнухів, щоб привести з Ізраїлевих синів, і з царського, і з шляхетського роду,

4 l ads in whom there is no blemish, and of good appearance, and skilful in all wisdom, and possessing knowledge, and teaching thought, and who have ability to stand in the palace of the king, and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.

юнаків, що нема в них жодної вади, і вони вродливого вигляду та розумні в усякій мудрості, і здібні до знання, і розуміють науку, і щоб у них була моторність служити в царському палаці, і щоб навчати їх книг та мови халдеїв.

5 A nd the king doth appoint for them a rate, day by day, of the king's portion of food, and of the wine of his drinking, so as to nourish them three years, that at the end thereof they may stand before the king.

І призначив їм цар щоденну поживу, з царської їжі та з вина, що сам його пив, а на їхнє виховання три роки, а по закінченні їх стануть вони перед царським обличчям.

6 A nd there are among them out of the sons of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

І були серед них з Юдиних синів Даниїл, Ананія, Мисаїл та Азарія.

7 a nd the chief of the eunuchs setteth names on them, and he setteth on Daniel, Belteshazzar; and on Hananiah, Shadrach; and on Mishael, Meshach; and on Azariah, Abed-Nego.

А начальник евнухів дав їм інші імена, і дав Даниїлові ім'я Валтасар, а Ананії Шадрах, а Мисаїлові Мешах, а Азарії Авед-Неґо.

8 A nd Daniel purposeth in his heart that he will not pollute himself with the king's portion of food, and with the wine of his drinking, and he seeketh of the chief of the eunuchs that he may not pollute himself.

І поклав Даниїл собі на серце, що він не оскверниться їжею царя та питвом, що той сам його пив, і просив від начальника евнухів, щоб не осквернитися.

9 A nd God giveth Daniel for kindness and for mercies before the chief of the eunuchs;

І дав Бог Даниїлові ласку та милість перед начальником евнухів.

10 a nd the chief of the eunuchs saith to Daniel, `I am fearing my lord the king, who hath appointed your food and your drink, for why doth he see your faces sadder than the lads which of your circle? then ye have made my head indebted to the king,'

І сказав начальник евнухів до Даниїла: Боюсь я свого пана царя, бо він визначив вашу їжу та ваше питво. Бо коли б він побачив ваше обличчя худішим, ніж у тих юнаків, що вашого віку, то ви зробите мою голову винуватою перед царем.

11 A nd Daniel saith unto the Meltzar, whom the chief of the eunuchs hath appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

І сказав Даниїл до старшого, якого начальник евнухів призначив над Даниїлом, Ананією, Мисаїлом та Азарією:

12 ` Try, I pray thee, thy servants, ten days; and they give to us of the vegetables, and we eat, and water, and we drink;

Випробуй но своїх рабів десять день, і нехай дають нам із ярини, і ми будемо їсти, та воду і будемо пити.

13 a nd our appearance is seen before thee, and the appearance of the lads who are eating the king's portion of food, and as thou seest -- deal with thy servants.'

І нехай з'являться перед тобою наші обличчя та обличчя тих юнаків, що їдять царську їжу, і згідно з тим, що побачиш, зроби зо своїми рабами.

14 A nd he hearkeneth to them, to this word, and trieth them ten days:

І той послухався їх у цьому, і випробовував їх десять день.

15 a nd at the end of ten days their appearance hath appeared better and fatter in flesh then any of the lads who are eating the king's portion of food.

А по десяти днях їхній вигляд виявився кращим, і вони були здоровіші на тілі, аніж усі ті юнаки, що їли царську їжу.

16 A nd the Meltzar is taking away their portion of food, and the wine of their drink, and is giving to them vegetables.

І цей старший відносив їхню їжу та вино їхнього пиття, а давав їм ярину.

17 A s to these four lads, God hath given to them knowledge and understanding in every literature, and wisdom; and Daniel hath given instruction about every vision and dreams.

А ці четверо юнаків, дав їм Бог пізнання та розуміння в кожній книжці та мудрості, а Даниїл розумівся на всякому видінні та снах.

18 A nd at the end of the days that the king had said to bring them in, bring them in doth the chief of the eunuchs before Nebuchadnezzar.

А на кінець тих днів, коли цар сказав привести їх, то начальник евнухів привів їх перед обличчя Навуходоносорове.

19 A nd the king speaketh with them, and there hath none been found among them all like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, and they stand before the king;

І цар розмовляв з ними, і зо всіх них жоден не був знайдений таким, як Даниїл, Ананія, Мисаїл та Азарія. І вони ставали перед царським обличчям.

20 a nd any matter of wisdom understanding that the king hath sought of them, he findeth them ten hands above all the scribes, the enchanters, who in all his kingdom.

А всяку справу мудрости та розуму, що шукав від них цар, то він знайшов їх удесятеро мудрішими від усіх чарівників та заклиначів, що були в усьому його царстві.

21 A nd Daniel is unto the first year of Cyrus the king.

І був Даниїл там аж до першого року царя Кіра.
