1 A nd Nahash the Ammonite cometh up, and encampeth against Jabesh-Gilead, and all the men of Jabesh say unto Nahash, `Make with us a covenant, and we serve thee.'

І вийшов аммонітянин Нахаш, і таборував при ґілеадському Явешу. І сказали всі явеські люди до Нахаша: Склади з нами умову, і ми будемо служити тобі!

2 A nd Nahash the Ammonite saith unto them, `For this I covenant with you, by picking out to you every right eye -- and I have put it a reproach on all Israel.'

І сказав до них аммонітянин Нахаш: Про це складу з вами умову, щоб кожному з вас вибрати праве око, і я вчиню це на ганьбу для всього Ізраїля.

3 A nd the elders of Jabesh say to him, `Let us alone seven days, and we send messengers into all the border of Israel: and if there is none saving us -- then we have come out unto thee.'

І сказали до нього явеські старші: Зачекай нам сім день, і нехай ми пошлемо послів у всі Ізраїлеві краї. І якщо нема нам порятунку, то вийдемо до тебе.

4 A nd the messengers come to Gibeah of Saul, and speak the words in the ears of the people, and all the people lift up their voice and weep;

І прийшли ті посли до Саулової Ґів'ї, і говорили ті слова до ушей народу. І ввесь народ підніс свій голос, та й заплакав.

5 a nd lo, Saul hath come after the herd out of the field, and Saul saith, `What -- to the people, that they weep?' and they recount to him the words of the men of Jabesh.

Аж ось Саул іде худобою з поля. І сказав Саул: Що народові, що плачуть? І розповіли йому слова явеських людей.

6 A nd the Spirit of God doth prosper over Saul, in his hearing these words, and his anger burneth greatly,

І злинув Божий Дух на Саула, як слухав він ті слова, і дуже запалав його гнів!

7 a nd he taketh a couple of oxen, and cutteth them in pieces, and sendeth through all the border of Israel, by the hand of the messengers, saying, `He who is not coming out after Saul and after Samuel -- thus it is done to his oxen;' and the fear of Jehovah falleth on the people, and they come out as one man.

І взяв він пару худобин, і порізав її, і порозсилав по всім Ізраїлевім Краї через послів, говорячи: Хто не вийде за Саулом та за Самуїлом, отак буде зроблено худобі його! І великий страх спав на людей, і вони повиходили, як один чоловік.

8 A nd he inspecteth them in Bezek, and the sons of Israel are three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

І він перелічив їх у Безеку, і було Ізраїлевих синів триста тисяч, а Юдиних людей тридцять тисяч.

9 A nd they say to the messengers who are coming, `Thus do ye say to the men of Jabesh-Gilead: To-morrow ye have safety -- by the heat of the sun;' and the messengers come and declare to the men of Jabesh, and they rejoice;

І сказали вони до послів, що прийшли: Так скажете мешканцям ґілеадського Явешу: Узавтра, як пригріє сонце, буде вам порятунок. І прийшли ті посли, і розповіли явеським людям, і вони зраділи.

10 a nd the men of Jabesh say, `To-morrow we come out unto you, and ye have done to us according to all that good in your eyes.'

І сказали явеські люди: Узавтра ми вийдемо до вас, а ви зробите нам усе, що добре в очах ваших.

11 A nd it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that Saul putteth the people in three detachments, and they come into the midst of the camp in the morning-watch, and smite Ammon till the heat of the day; and it cometh to pass that those left are scattered, and there have not been left of them two together.

І сталося назавтра, і склав Саул із народу три відділи, і вони пройшли в середину табору за ранньої сторожі, та й били Аммона аж до спекоти дня. І сталося, позосталі розбіглися, і не позосталося між ними двох разом.

12 A nd the people say unto Samuel, `Who is he that saith, Saul doth reign over us! give ye up the men, and we put them to death.'

І сказав народ до Самуїла: Хто той, що запитував: Саул буде царювати над нами? Дайте тих людей, а ми їх повбиваємо!

13 A nd Saul saith, `There is no man put to death on this day, for to-day hath Jehovah wrought salvation in Israel.'

Та Саул сказав: Ніхто не буде забитий цього дня, бо Господь сьогодні зробив спасіння серед Ізраїля.

14 A nd Samuel saith unto the people, `Come and we go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there;'

А Самуїл сказав до народу: Ходіть, і підемо в Ґілґал, та й відновимо там царство!

15 a nd all the people go to Gilgal, and cause Saul to reign there before Jehovah in Gilgal, and sacrifice there sacrifices of peace-offerings before Jehovah, and there Saul rejoiceth -- and all the men of Israel -- very greatly.

І пішов увесь народ до Ґілґалу, і настановили царем там Саула перед Господнім лицем у Ґілґалі, і приносили мирні жертви перед Господнім лицем. І дуже радів там Саул та всі Ізраїлеві мужі!
