1 A nd the man knew Eve his wife, and she conceiveth and beareth Cain, and saith, `I have gotten a man by Jehovah;'

І пізнав Адам Єву, жінку свою, і вона завагітніла, і породила Каїна, і сказала: Набула чоловіка від Господа.

2 a nd she addeth to bear his brother, even Abel. And Abel is feeding a flock, and Cain hath been servant of the ground.

А далі вона породила брата йому Авеля. І був Авель пастух отари, а Каїн був рільник.

3 A nd it cometh to pass at the end of days that Cain bringeth from the fruit of the ground a present to Jehovah;

І сталось по деякім часі, і приніс Каїн Богові жертву від плоду землі.

4 a nd Abel, he hath brought, he also, from the female firstlings of his flock, even from their fat ones; and Jehovah looketh unto Abel and unto his present,

А Авель, він також приніс від своїх перворідних з отари та від їхнього лою. І зглянувся Господь на Авеля й на жертву його,

5 a nd unto Cain and unto his present He hath not looked; and it is very displeasing to Cain, and his countenance is fallen.

а на Каїна й на жертву його не зглянувся. І сильно розгнівався Каїн, і обличчя його похилилось.

6 A nd Jehovah saith unto Cain, `Why hast thou displeasure? and why hath thy countenance fallen?

І сказав Господь Каїнові: Чого ти розгнівався, і чого похилилось обличчя твоє?

7 I s there not, if thou dost well, acceptance? and if thou dost not well, at the opening a sin-offering is crouching, and unto thee its desire, and thou rulest over it.'

Отож, коли ти добре робитимеш, то підіймеш обличчя своє, а коли недобре, то в дверях гріх підстерігає. І до тебе його пожадання, а ти мусиш над ним панувати.

8 A nd Cain saith unto Abel his brother, and it cometh to pass in their being in the field, that Cain riseth up against Abel his brother, and slayeth him.

І говорив Каїн до Авеля, брата свого. І сталось, як були вони в полі, повстав Каїн на Авеля, брата свого, і вбив його.

9 A nd Jehovah saith unto Cain, `Where Abel thy brother?' and he saith, `I have not known; my brother's keeper -- I?'

І сказав Господь Каїнові: Де Авель, твій брат? А той відказав: Не знаю. Чи я сторож брата свого?

10 A nd He saith, `What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood is crying unto Me from the ground;

І сказав Господь: Що ти зробив? Голос крови брата твого взиває до Мене з землі.

11 a nd now, cursed thou from the ground, which hath opened her mouth to receive the blood of thy brother from thy hand;

А тепер ти проклятий від землі, що розкрила уста свої, щоб прийняти кров твого брата з твоєї руки.

12 w hen thou tillest the ground, it doth not add to give its strength to thee -- a wanderer, even a trembling one, thou art in the earth.'

Коли будеш ти порати землю, вона більше не дасть тобі сили своєї. Мандрівником та заволокою будеш ти на землі.

13 A nd Cain saith unto Jehovah, `Greater is my punishment than to be borne;

І сказав Каїн до Господа: Більший мій гріх, аніж можна знести.

14 l o, Thou hast driven me to-day from off the face of the ground, and from Thy face I am hid; and I have been a wanderer, even a trembling one, in the earth, and it hath been -- every one finding me doth slay me.'

Ось Ти виганяєш сьогодні мене з цієї землі, і я буду ховатись від лиця Твого. І я стану мандрівником та заволокою на землі, і буде, кожен, хто стріне мене, той уб'є мене.

15 A nd Jehovah saith to him, `Therefore -- of any slayer of Cain sevenfold it is required;' and Jehovah setteth to Cain a token that none finding him doth slay him.

І промовив до нього Господь: Через те кожен, хто вб'є Каїна, семикратно буде пімщений. І вмістив Господь знака на Каїні, щоб не вбив його кожен, хто стріне його.

16 A nd Cain goeth out from before Jehovah, and dwelleth in the land, moving about east of Eden;

І вийшов Каїн з-перед лиця Господнього, й осів у країні Нод, на схід від Едену.

17 a nd Cain knoweth his wife, and she conceiveth, and beareth Enoch; and he is building a city, and he calleth the name of the city, according to the name of his son -- Enoch.

І Каїн пізнав свою жінку, і стала вона вагітна, і вродила Еноха. І збудував він місто, і назвав ім'я тому містові, як ім'я свого сина: Енох.

18 A nd born to Enoch is Irad; and Irad hath begotten Mehujael; and Mehujael hath begotten Methusael; and Methusael hath begotten Lamech.

І народився в Еноха Ірад, а Ірад породив Мехуяїла, а Мехуяїл породив Метушаїла, а Метушаїл породив Ламеха.

19 A nd Lamech taketh to himself two wives, the name of the one Adah, and the name of the second Zillah.

І взяв собі Ламех дві жінки, ім'я одній Ада, а ймення другій Цілла.

20 A nd Adah beareth Jabal, he hath been father of those inhabiting tents and purchased possessions;

І породила Ада Явала, він був батьком тих, що сидять по наметах і мають череду.

21 a nd the name of his brother Jubal, he hath been father of every one handling harp and organ.

А ймення брата його Ювал, він був батьком усім, хто держить у руках гусла й сопілку.

22 A nd Zillah she also bare Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron; and a sister of Tubal-Cain Naamah.

А Цілла також породила Тувалкаїна, що кував всіляку мідь та залізо. А сестра Тувалкаїнова Ноема.

23 A nd Lamech saith to his wives: -- `Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, give ear my saying: For a man I have slain for my wound, Even a young man for my hurt;

І промовив Ламех до жінок своїх: Адо й Цілло, послухайте ви мого голосу, жони Ламехові, почуйте ви слова мого! Бо якби я мужа забив за уразу свою, а дитину за рану свою,

24 F or sevenfold is required for Cain, And for Lamech seventy and sevenfold.'

і як буде усемеро пімщений Каїн, то Ламех у сімдесятеро й семеро!

25 A nd Adam again knoweth his wife, and she beareth a son, and calleth his name Seth, `for God hath appointed for me another seed instead of Abel:' for Cain had slain him.

І пізнав Адам ще свою жінку, і сина вона породила. І назвала ймення йому: Сиф, бо Бог дав мені інше насіння за Авеля, що забив його Каїн.

26 A nd to Seth, to him also a son hath been born, and he calleth his name Enos; then a beginning was made of preaching in the name of Jehovah.

А Сифові теж народився був син, і він назвав імення йому: Енош. Тоді зачали були призивати Ймення Господнє.
