1 A son of a year Saul in his reigning, yea, two years he hath reigned over Israel,

Рік був, як Саул зацарював, і два роки царював над Ізраїлем.

2 a nd Saul chooseth for himself three thousand out of Israel; and two thousand are with Saul in Michmash, and in the hill-country of Beth-El; and a thousand have been with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin; and the remnant of the people he hath sent each to his tents.

І вибрав собі Саул три тисячі з Ізраїля, дві тисячі були з Саулом у Міхмаші та на горі Бет-Елу, а тисяча були з Йонатаном у Веніяминовій Ґів'ї. А решту народу відпустив він кожного до наметів своїх.

3 A nd Jonathan smiteth the garrison of the Philistines which in Geba, and the Philistines hear, and Saul hath blown with a trumpet through all the land, saying, `Let the Hebrews hear.'

І побив Йонатан филистимського намісника, що в Ґеві. І почули це филистимляни, а Саул засурмив у сурму по всьому Краю, говорячи: Нехай почують євреї!

4 A nd all Israel have heard, saying, `Saul hath smitten the garrison of the Philistines,' and also, `Israel hath been abhorred by the Philistines;' and the people are called after Saul to Gilgal.

А ввесь Ізраїль чув, говорячи: Саул побив филистимського намісника, і тим Ізраїль став ненависним серед филистимлян. І скликаний був народ за Саулом до Ґілґалу.

5 A nd the Philistines have been gathered to fight with Israel; thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and a people as the sand which on the sea-shore for multitude; and they come up and encamp in Michmash, east of Beth-Aven.

А филистимляни були зібрані воювати з Ізраїлем, тридцять тисяч возів і шість тисяч верхівців, а народу, щодо численности, як піску на морському березі. І вийшли вони, і таборували в Міхмаші, на схід Бет-Авену.

6 A nd the men of Israel have seen that they are distressed, that the people hath been oppressed, and the people hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

А Ізраїльтянин побачив, що скрутно йому, що народ був пригноблений, і народ ховався по печерах, і по щілинах, і по скелях, і по льохах та по ямах.

7 A nd Hebrews have passed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; and Saul yet in Gilgal, and all the people have trembled after him.

А інші євреї перейшли Йордан до краю Ґада та до Ґілеаду. А Саул був ще у Ґілґалі, а ввесь народ із тривогою поспішав за ним.

8 A nd he waiteth seven days, according to the appointment with Samuel, and Samuel hath not come to Gilgal, and the people are scattered from off him.

І чекав він сім день умовленого часу, що призначив Самуїл, та Самуїл не прийшов до Ґілґалу, і народ став розбігатися від нього.

9 A nd Saul saith, `Bring nigh unto me the burnt-offering, and the peace-offerings;' and he causeth the burnt-offering to ascend.

І сказав Саул: Приведіть до мене призначене на цілопалення та мирні жертви. І він приніс цілопалення.

10 A nd it cometh to pass at his completing to cause the burnt-offering to ascend, that lo, Samuel hath come, and Saul goeth out to meet him, to bless him;

І сталося, як скінчив він приносити цілопалення, то ось приходить Самуїл. І вийшов Саул, щоб зустріти його, щоб привітати його.

11 a nd Samuel saith, `What hast thou done?' And Saul saith, `Because I saw that the people were scattered from off me, and thou hadst not come at the appointment of the days, and the Philistines are gathered to Michmash,

І сказав Самуїл: Що ти зробив? А Саул відказав: Бо я бачив, що народ розбігається від мене, а ти не прийшов на умовлений час тих днів. А филистимляни зібралися в Міхмаші.

12 a nd I say, Now do the Philistines come down unto me to Gilgal, and the face of Jehovah I have not appeased; and I force myself, and cause the burnt-offering to ascend.'

І я сказав: Тепер филистимляни зійдуть до мене до Ґілґалу, а Господнього лиця я ще не вблагав. І я вирішив, і приніс цілопалення!

13 A nd Samuel saith unto Saul, `Thou hast been foolish; thou hast not kept the command of Jehovah thy God, which He commanded thee, for now had Jehovah established thy kingdom over Israel unto the age;

І сказав Самуїл до Саула: Ти зробив нерозумне! Не послухав ти наказів Господа, Бога свого, що наказав був тобі, бо тепер Господь міцно поставив би аж навіки твоє царство над Ізраїлем.

14 a nd, now, thy kingdom doth not stand, Jehovah hath sought for Himself a man according to His own heart, and Jehovah chargeth him for leader over His people, for thou hast not kept that which Jehovah commanded thee.'

А тепер царство твоє не буде стояти, Господь пошукав Собі мужа за серцем Своїм, і Господь наказав йому бути володарем над народом Своїм, бо ти не виконав, що наказав був тобі Господь.

15 A nd Samuel riseth, and goeth up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin; and Saul inspecteth the people who are found with him, about six hundred men,

І встав Самуїл, і зійшов із Ґілґалу до Веніяминової Ґів'ї. А Саул перелічив народ, що знаходився з ним, близько шости сотень чоловіка.

16 a nd Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who are found with them, are abiding in Gibeah of Benjamin, and the Philistines have encamped in Michmash.

І Саул і син його Йонатан та народ, що знаходився з ним, сиділи в Веніяминовій Ґеві, филистимляни ж таборували в Міхмаші.

17 A nd the destroyer goeth out from the camp of the Philistines -- three detachments; the one detachment turneth unto the way of Ophrah, unto the land of Shual;

І вийшли руїнники з филистимського табору трьома відділами: один відділ звертається на офрійську дорогу до краю Шуал,

18 a nd the one detachment turneth the way of Beth-Horon, and the one detachment turneth the way of the border which is looking on the valley of the Zeboim, toward the wilderness.

і один відділ звертається на дорогу до Бет-Хорону, а один відділ звертається на дорогу до границі, що провадить від Ґе-Цевоїму до пустині.

19 A nd an artificer is not found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, `Lest the Hebrews make sword or spear;'

А коваля не було по всім Ізраїлевім Краї, бо филистимляни сказали: Щоб не робили євреї меча чи списа!

20 a nd all Israel go down to the Philistines, to sharpen each his ploughshare, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock;

І сходив увесь Ізраїль до филистимлян гострити кожен свого плуга, і заступа свого, і сокиру свою, і серпа свого,

21 a nd there hath been the file for mattocks, and for coulters, and for three-pronged rakes, and for the axes, and to set up the goads.

коли тупилися вістря плугів, і заступів, і вил, і сокир, і мусіли сходити, щоб направити вістря рожна.

22 A nd it hath been, in the day of battle, that there hath not been found sword and spear in the hand of any of the people who with Saul and with Jonathan -- and there is found to Saul and to Jonathan his son.

І сталося за днів війни, і не знайшлося ані меча, ані списа в руці всього народу, що був з Саулом та з Йонатаном, та був знайдений тільки для Саула та для сина його Йонатана.

23 A nd the station of the Philistines goeth out unto the passage of Michmash.

І вийшла филистимська залога до переходу Міхмашу.
