1 A nd the war is long between the house of Saul and the house of David, and David is going on and strong, and the house of Saul are going on and weak.

І була довга та війна між домом Сауловим та між домом Давидовим. А Давид усе зміцнювався, а Саулів дім усе слабнув.

2 A nd there are born to David sons in Hebron, and his first-born is Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess,

І в Хевроні народилися Давидові сини, і був його первісток Амнон, від їзреелітки Ахіноам;

3 a nd his second Chileab, of Abigail wife of Nabal the Carmelite, and the third Absalom son of Maacah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur,

а другий син його Кіл'ав від Авіґаїл, колишньої жінки кармелянина Навала; а третій Авесалом, син Маахи, дочки Талмая, царя ґешурського;

4 a nd the fourth Adonijah son of Haggith, and the fifth Shephatiah son of Abital,

а четвертий Адонійя, син Хаґґіт, а п'ятий Шефатія, син Авітал,

5 a nd the sixth Ithream, of Eglah wife of David; these have been born to David in Hebron.

а шостий Їтреам, від Еґли, Давидової жінки, оці народилися Давидові в Хевроні.

6 A nd it cometh to pass, in the war being between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner hath been strengthening himself in the house of Saul,

І сталося, коли була війна між домом Сауловим та домом Давидовим, то Авнер тримався Саулового дому.

7 a nd Saul hath a concubine, and her name Rizpah daughter of Aiah, and saith unto Abner, `Wherefore hast thou gone in unto the concubine of my father?'

І мав Саул наложницю, а ім'я їй Ріцпа, дочка Айї. І сказав Іш-Бошет до Авнера: Чого ти прийшов до наложниці батька мого?

8 A nd it is displeasing to Abner exceedingly, because of the words of Ish-Bosheth, and he saith, `The head of a dog I -- that in reference to Judah to-day I do kindness with the house of Saul thy father, unto his brethren, and unto his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David -- that thou chargest against me iniquity concerning the woman to-day?

І дуже запалився Авнерові гнів на слова Іш-Бошетові, і він сказав: Чи я псяча юдська голова? Сьогодні я роблю ласку домові твого батька Саула, його братам та його приятелям, і не віддав тебе в Давидову руку, а ти сьогодні згадав на мені гріх цієї жінки?

9 t hus doth God to Abner, and thus He doth add to him, surely as Jehovah hath sworn to David -- surely so I do to him:

Нехай так зробить Бог Авнерові, і нехай ще додасть йому, якщо я не зроблю Давидові так, як Господь присягнув був йому,

10 t o cause the kingdom to pass over from the house of Saul, and to raise up the throne of David over Israel, and over Judah, from Dan even unto Beer-Sheba.'

щоб перенести царство від Саулового дому, і щоб поставити Давидів трон над Ізраїлем та над Юдою від Дану й аж до Беер-Шеви.

11 A nd he is not able any more to turn back Abner a word, because of his fearing him.

І той не міг уже відповідати Авнерові ані слова, бо боявся його.

12 A nd Abner sendeth messengers unto David for himself, saying, `Whose the land?' saying, `Make thy covenant with me, and lo, my hand with thee, to bring round unto thee all Israel.'

І послав Авнер замість себе послів до Давида сказати: Чия це земля? І ще сказати: Склади ж свою умову зо мною, і ось рука моя буде з тобою, щоб привернути до тебе всього Ізраїля.

13 A nd he saith, `Good -- I make with thee a covenant; only, one thing I am asking of thee, that is, Thou dost not see my face, except thou dost first bring in Michal, daughter of Saul in thy coming into see my face.'

А Давид відказав: Добре, я складу з тобою умову! Тільки однієї речі я жадаю від тебе, а саме: ти не побачиш обличчя мого, якщо ти не приведеш Мелхи, Саулової дочки, коли ти прийдеш побачити мене.

14 A nd David sendeth messengers unto Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, saying, `Give up my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself with a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.'

І послав Давид послів до Іш-Бошета, Саулового сина, говорячи: Віддай жінку мою Мелху, яку я заручив був собі за сотню крайніх плотів филистимських.

15 A nd Ish-Bosheth sendeth, and taketh her from a man, from Phaltiel son of Laish,

І послав Іш-Бошет, і взяв її від її чоловіка, від Палтіїла, сина Лаїша.

16 a nd her husband goeth with her, going on and weeping behind her, unto Bahurim, and Abner saith unto him, `Go, turn back;' and he turneth back.

І пішов з нею чоловік її, і все плакав за нею аж до Бахуріму. І сказав до нього Авнер: Іди, вернися! І той вернувся.

17 A nd the word of Abner was with the elders of Israel, saying, `Heretofore ye have been seeking David for king over you,

А Авнерове слово з Ізраїлевими старшими було таке: Ви вже давно бажаєте мати Давида царем над собою.

18 a nd now, do, for Jehovah hath spoken of David saying, By the hand of David my servant -- to save My people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.'

А тепер зробіть це, бо Господь сказав був до Давида, говорячи: Рукою Мого раба Давида Я спасу народ Мій, Ізраїля, від руки филистимлян та від руки всіх ворогів його.

19 A nd Abner speaketh also in the ears of Benjamin, and Abner goeth also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that good in the eyes of Israel, and in the eyes of all the house of Benjamin,

І говорив Авнер також до ушей Веніяминових. І також пішов Авнер говорити до ушей Давидових у Хевроні, усе, що добре в очах Ізраїля та в очах усього дому Веніяминового.

20 a nd Abner cometh in unto David, to Hebron, and with him twenty men, and David maketh for Abner, and for the men who with him, a banquet.

І прийшов Авнер до Давида до Хеврону, а з ним двадцятеро люда. І Давид зробив прийняття Авнерові та людям, що з ним.

21 A nd Abner saith unto David, `I arise, and go, and gather unto my lord the king the whole of Israel, and they make with thee a covenant, and thou hast reigned over all that thy soul desireth;' and David sendeth away Abner, and he goeth in peace.

І сказав Авнер до Давида: Нехай я встану й піду, і приведу до пана, царя мого, усього Ізраїля, а вони складуть із тобою умову, і ти будеш царювати над усім, чого буде жадати душа твоя. І відпустив Давид Авнера, і він пішов із миром.

22 A nd lo, the servants of David, and Joab, have come from the troop, and much spoil have brought with them, and Abner is not with David in Hebron, for he hath sent him away, and he goeth in peace;

Аж ось прийшли слуги Давидові та Йоав із походу, і принесли з собою велику здобич. А Авнера не було з Давидом у Хевроні, бо він відпустив його, і той пішов із миром.

23 a nd Joab and all the host that with him have come, and they declare to Joab, saying, `Abner son of Ner hath come unto the king, and he sendeth him away, and he goeth in peace.'

А Йоав та все військо, що було з ним, прийшли. І розповіли Йоаву, говорячи: Приходив Авнер, син Нерів, до царя, а він відпустив його, і той пішов із миром.

24 A nd Joab cometh unto the king, and saith, `What hast thou done? lo, Abner hath come unto thee! why this -- thou hast sent him away, and he is really gone?

І прийшов Йоав до царя та й сказав: Що ти зробив? Ось приходив до тебе Авнер, нащо ти відпустив його, і він відійшов?

25 T hou hast known Abner son of Ner, that to deceive thee he came, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou art doing.'

Ти знаєш Авнера, Нерового сина, він приходив, щоб намовити тебе та щоб вивідати твій вихід та вхід твій, і щоб вивідати все, що ти робиш.

26 A nd Joab goeth out from David, and sendeth messengers after Abner, and they bring him back from the well of Sirah, and David knew not.

І вийшов Йоав від Давида, і послав посланців за Авнером, і вони завернули його з Бор-Гассіри, а Давид про те не знав.

27 A nd Abner turneth back to Hebron, and Joab turneth him aside unto the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and smiteth him there in the fifth -- and he dieth -- for the blood of Asahel his brother.

І вернувся Авнер до Хеврону, а Йоав відвів його в середину брами, щоб поговорити з ним таємно, та й ударив його там у живіт, і той помер за кров брата його Асаїла.

28 A nd David heareth afterwards and saith, `Acquitted I, and my kingdom, by Jehovah, unto the age, from the blood of Abner son of Ner;

А потім почув про це Давид і сказав: Невинний я та царство моє перед Господом аж навіки в крові Авнера, Нерового сина.

29 i t doth stay on the head of Joab, and on all the house of his father, and there is not cut off from the house of Joab one having an issue, and leprous, and laying hold on a staff, and falling by a sword, and lacking bread.'

Нехай вона спаде на голову Йоава та на ввесь дім його батька! І нехай не перестає в Йоавовому домі течивий, і прокажений, і той, хто опирається на кия, і хто падає від меча, і хто не має хліба!

30 A nd Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner because that he put to death Asahel their brother, in Gibeon, in battle.

А Йоав та брат його Авішай убили Авнера за те, що він забив їхнього брата Асаїла в Ґів'оні в бою.

31 A nd David saith unto Joab, and unto all the people who with him, `Rend your garments, and gird on sackcloth, and mourn before Abner;' and king David is going after the bier.

І сказав Давид до Йоава та до всього народу, що був з ним: Роздеріть вашу одежу, і опережіться веретищем, та й голосіть за Авнером! А цар Давид ішов за марами.

32 A nd they bury Abner in Hebron, and the king lifteth up his voice, and weepeth at the grave of Abner, and all the people weep;

І поховали Авнера в Хевроні, а цар підніс свій голос та й плакав над Авнеровим гробом, і плакав увесь народ.

33 a nd the king lamenteth for Abner, and saith: -- `As the death of a fool doth Abner die?

І заспівав цар жалобну пісню над Авнером та й сказав: Чи Авнер мав загинути смертю негідного?

34 T hy hands not bound, And thy feet to fetters not brought nigh! As one falling before sons of evil -- Thou hast fallen!' and all the people add to weep over him.

Твої руки були не пов'язані, не забиті були твої ноги в кайдани, ти впав, як від неправедних падають! І ввесь народ ще більше плакав над ним.

35 A nd all the people come to cause David to eat bread while yet day, and David sweareth, saying, `Thus doth God to me, and thus He doth add, for -- before the going in of the sun, I taste no bread or any other thing.'

І прийшов увесь народ, щоб намовити Давида покріпитися хлібом ще того дня, та присягнув Давид, говорячи: Нехай так зробить мені Бог, і нехай ще додасть, якщо я перед заходом сонця скуштую хліба або чогобудь!

36 A nd all the people have discerned, and it is good in their eyes, as all that the king hath done is good in the eyes of all the people;

А ввесь народ довідався про це, і це було добре в їхніх очах, як і все, що робив цар, було добре в очах усього народу.

37 a nd all the people know, even all Israel, in that day, that it hath not been from the king -- to put to death Abner son of Ner.

І того дня довідалися ввесь народ та ввесь Ізраїль, що то не було від царя, щоб забити Авнера, сина Нерового.

38 A nd the king saith unto his servants, `Do ye not know that a prince and a great one hath fallen this day in Israel?

І сказав цар своїм слугам: Ото ж знайте, що вождь та великий муж упав цього дня!

39 a nd I to-day tender, and an anointed king: and these men, sons of Zeruiah, too hard for me; Jehovah doth recompense to the doer of the evil according to his evil.'

А я сьогодні слабий, хоч помазаний цар, а ті люди, сини Церуї, сильніші від мене. Нехай відплатить Господь злочинцеві за його зло!
