1 W ho doth make my head waters, And mine eye a fountain of tears? And I weep by day and by night, For the wounded of the daughter of my people.

(8-23) Ой, коли б голова моя стала водою, а око моє за джерело сльози, то я плакав би вдень та вночі над побитими доньки народу мого!...

2 W ho doth give me in a wilderness A lodging-place of travellers? And I leave my people, and go from them, For all of them adulterers, An assembly of treacherous ones.

(9-1) Ой, коли б на пустині нічліг подорожніх я мав, тоді б я покинув народа свого, і пішов би від них, бо вони перелюбники всі, збори зрадників!

3 A nd they bend their tongue, their bow a lie, And not for stedfastness have they been mighty in the land, For from evil unto evil they have gone forth, And Me they have not known, An affirmation of Jehovah!

(9-2) Вони напинають свого язика, немов лука свого, для неправди, міцніють вони на землі не для правди, бо від злого до злого ідуть і не знають Мене, говорить Господь!

4 E ach of his friend -- beware ye, And on any brother, do not trust, For every brother doth utterly supplant, For every friend slanderously doth walk,

(9-3) Один одного остерігайтесь, і не покладайтесь на жодного брата, кожен бо брат обманити обманить, і приятель кожен обмовник!

5 A nd each at his friend they mock, And truth they do not speak, They taught their tongue to speak falsehood, To commit iniquity they have laboured.

(9-4) Один одного зводить, і правди не кажуть, привчили свого язика говорити неправду, помучилися, лихо чинячи!

6 t hy dwelling in the midst of deceit, Through deceit they refused to know Me, An affirmation of Jehovah.

(9-5) Серед омани твоє проживання, через оману не хочуть пізнати Мене, говорить Господь.

7 T herefore, thus said Jehovah of Hosts: Lo, I am refining them, and have tried them, For how do I do because of the daughter of My people?

(9-6) Тому так промовляє Господь Саваот: Ось Я їх перетоплюю та випробовую їх, бо що маю вчинити Я ради дочки Свого люду?

8 A slaughtering arrow their tongue, Deceit it hath spoken in its mouth, Peace with its neighbour it speaketh, And in its heart it layeth its ambush,

(9-7) Їхній язик смертоносна стріла, він оману говорить: устами своїми говорить із ближнім про мир, а в нутрі своєму кладе свою засідку...

9 F or these things do not I see after them? An affirmation of Jehovah, Against a nation such as this doth not My soul avenge itself?

(9-8) Чи ж за це Я їх не покараю? говорить Господь. Хіба ж над народом, як цей, непомститься душа Моя?

10 F or the mountains I lift up weeping and wailing, And for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, For they have been burnt up without any passing over, Nor have they heard the voice of cattle, From the fowl of the heavens unto the beast they have fled, they have gone.

(9-9) Я плач та ридання здійму над оцими горами, і спів жалобний понад степовими лугами, вони бо попалені так, що ними не ходить ніхто, і реву худоби не чути: від птаства небесного й аж до худоби розбіглося все, відійшло!

11 A nd I make Jerusalem become heaps, A habitation of dragons, And the cities of Judah I make a desolation, Without inhabitant.

(9-10) І Я Єрусалим на руїни віддам, на мешкання шакалів, а юдські міста на спустошення дам, і не буде мешканця у них!

12 W ho the wise man? and he understandeth this, And he to whom the mouth of Jehovah spake? And he doth declare it, For what hath the land perished? It hath been burnt up as a wilderness, Without any passing through.

(9-11) Хто муж мудрий, який зрозумів би оце, і до кого Господні уста промовляли, щоб вияснить те, за що згинув цей Край, за що спалений він, як пустиня, і що нею не ходить ніхто?

13 A nd Jehovah saith: Because of their forsaking My law that I set before them, And they have not hearkened to My voice nor walked in it,

(9-12) А Господь відказав: За те, що вони покинули Закона Мого, що Я дав перед ними, і не слухалися Мого голосу, і не ходили за ним, за Законом,

14 A nd they walk after the stubbornness of their heart, And after the Baalim, that their fathers taught them,

(9-13) а ходили за впертістю серця свого й за Ваалами, що навчили про них їхні батьки...

15 T herefore, thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel: Lo, I am causing them -- this people -- to eat wormwood, And I have caused them to drink water of gall,

(9-14) Тому так промовляє Господь Саваот, Бог Ізраїлів: Ось Я їх, цей народ, полином нагодую й водою отруйною їх напою!

16 A nd I have scattered them among nations Which they knew not, they and their fathers, And have sent after them the sword, Till I have consumed them.

(9-15) І розпорошу Я їх серед народів, яких ні вони, ні батьки їхні не знали, і пошлю Я за ними меча, аж поки не вигублю їх!

17 T hus said Jehovah of Hosts: Consider ye, and call for mourning women, And they come, And to the wise women send, and they come,

(9-16) Так говорить Господь Саваот: Розгляньтеся та голосільниць покличте, і нехай вони прийдуть, і пошліте до мудрих жінок, і вони поприходять!

18 A nd they hasten, and lift up for us a wailing. And run down our eyes do tears, And from our eyelids do waters flow.

(9-17) І хай поспішають, і хай спів жалоби над ними підіймуть, і хай наші очі зайдуться сльозою, а з наших повіків вода хай тече!

19 F or -- a voice of wailing is heard from Zion: How have we been spoiled! We have been greatly ashamed, Because we have forsaken the land, Because they have cast down our tabernacles.

(9-18) Бо почується голос жалобного співу з Сіону: Як ми попустошені, як посоромлені дуже!... Бо ми покинули свій край, бо покинули місце свого пробування...

20 B ut hear, ye women, a word of Jehovah, And your ear receiveth a word of His mouth, And teach ye your daughters wailing, and each her neighbour lamentation.

(9-19) Тож почуйте, жінки, слово Господа, і хай ваше ухо візьме слово уст Його, і навчіть дочок ваших жалобного співу, й одна одну жалобної пісні!

21 F or death hath come up into our windows, It hath come into our palaces, To cut off the suckling from without, Young men from the broad places.

(9-20) Бо смерть увійшла в наші вікна, до наших палат увійшла, щоб вирізати дітей з вулиці, із площ юнаків...

22 S peak thus -- an affirmation of Jehovah, And fallen hath the carcase of man, As dung on the face of the field, And as a handful after the reaper, And there is none gathering.

(9-21) Кажи так: Говорить Господь: І нападає людського трупа, мов гною на полі, і мов тих снопів за женцем, і не буде кому позбирати!...

23 T hus said Jehovah: Let not the wise boast himself in his wisdom, Nor let the mighty boast himself in his might, Let not the rich boast himself in his riches,

(9-22) Так говорить Господь: Хай не хвалиться мудрий своєю премудрістю, і хай не хвалиться лицар своєю хоробрістю, багатий багатством своїм хай не хвалиться!

24 B ut -- in this let the boaster boast himself, In understanding and knowing Me, For I Jehovah, doing kindness, Judgment, and righteousness, in the earth, For in these I have delighted, An affirmation of Jehovah.

(9-23) Бо хто буде хвалитись, хай хвалиться тільки оцим: що він розуміє та знає Мене, що Я то Господь, Який на землі чинить милість, правосуддя та правду, бо в цьому Моє уподобання, каже Господь!

25 L o, days are coming -- an affirmation of Jehovah, And I have laid a charge on all circumcised in the foreskin,

(9-24) Ось дні наступають, говорить Господь, і Я навіщу всіх обрізаних та необрізаних,

26 O n Egypt, and on Judah, and on Edom, And on the sons of Ammon, and on Moab, And on all cutting the corner, Who are dwelling in the wilderness, For all the nations uncircumcised, And all the house of Israel uncircumcised in heart!

(9-25) Єгипет та Юду, й Едома та Аммонових синів, і Моава та всіх, хто волосся довкола стриже, хто сидить на пустині, бо всі оці люди необрізані, а ввесь дім Ізраїлів необрізаносердий!...
