1 A nd all the sons of Israel go out, and the company is assembled as one man, from Dan even unto Beer-Sheba, and the land of Gilead, unto Jehovah, at Mizpeh.

Allora tutti i figli d'Israele si mossero, da Dan fino a Beer-Sceba e al paese di Galaad, e l'assemblea si raccolse come un sol uomo davanti all'Eterno a Mitspah.

2 A nd the chiefs of all the people, of all the tribes of Israel, station themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen drawing sword.

I capi di tutto il popolo di tutte le tribú d'Israele si presentarono nell'assemblea del popolo di DIO, in numero di quattrocentomila fanti, abili a maneggiar la spada.

3 A nd the sons of Benjamin hear that the sons of Israel have gone up to Mizpeh. And the sons of Israel say, `Speak ye, how hath this evil been?'

(E i figli di Beniamino udirono che i figli d'Israele erano saliti a Mitspah). Allora i figli d'Israele dissero: «Diteci; com'è stato commesso questo delitto?».

4 A nd the man, the Levite, husband of the woman who hath been murdered, answereth and saith, `Into Gibeah (which to Benjamin) I have come, I and my concubine, to lodge;

Allora il Levita, il marito della donna che era stata uccisa, rispose: «lo ero entrato con la mia concubina a Ghibeah di Beniamino per passarvi la notte.

5 a nd rise against me do the masters of Gibeah -- and they go round the house against me by night -- me they thought to slay, and my concubine they have humbled, and she dieth;

Ma gli abitanti di Ghibeah si levarono contro di me e attorniarono di notte la casa ove mi trovavo, con l'intenzione di uccidermi; ma invece essi violentarono la mia concubina, ed ella morì.

6 a nd I lay hold on my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and send her into all the country of the inheritance of Israel; for they have done wickedness and folly in Israel;

Così io presi la mia concubina, la tagliai a pezzi, che mandai per tutto il territorio della eredità d'Israele, perché costoro hanno commesso un delitto e una infamia in Israele.

7 l o, ye all sons of Israel; give for you a word and counsel here.'

Ecco tutti voi ora, o figli d'Israele date qui il vostro parere e il vostro consiglio».

8 A nd all the people rise as one man, saying, `None of us doth go to his tent, and none of us doth turn aside to his house;

Allora tutto il popolo si levò come un sol uomo, dicendo: «Nessuno di noi tornerà alla sua tenda, nessuno di noi rientrerà in casa sua.

9 a nd now, this the thing which we do to Gibeah -- against it by lot!

E ora, ecco ciò che faremo a Ghibeah: andremo contro di essa tirando a sorte,

10 a nd we have taken ten men of a hundred, of all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand of a myriad, to receive provision for the people, to do, at their coming to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly which it hath done in Israel.'

e prenderemo in tutte le tribú d'Israele dieci uomini su cento, cento su mille e mille su diecimila, i quali andranno a cercare viveri per il popolo, affinché andando contro Ghibeah di Beniamino la possano ripagare secondo tutta l'infamia che ha commesso in Israele».

11 A nd every man of Israel is gathered unto the city, as one man -- companions.

Così tutti gli uomini d'Israele si radunarono contro quella città uniti come un sol uomo.

12 A nd the tribes of Israel send men among all the tribes of Benjamin, saying, `What this evil which hath been among you?

Le tribú d'Israele mandarono quindi uomini per tutta la tribú di Beniamino a dire: «Che delitto è questo che è stato commesso fra voi?

13 A nd now, give up the men -- sons of worthlessness -- which in Gibeah, and we put them to death, and we put away evil from Israel.' And Benjamin have not been willing to hearken to the voice of their brethren, the sons of Israel;

Or dunque consegnateci quegli uomini, quegli scellerati che sono in Ghibeah, perché li mettiamo a morte e togliamo il male da Israele». Ma i figli di Beniamino non vollero dare ascolto alla voce dei loro fratelli, i figli d'Israele.

14 a nd the sons of Benjamin are gathered out of the cities to Gibeah, to go out to battle with the sons of Israel.

Anzi i figli di Beniamino si radunarono dalle loro cittá a Ghibeah per andare a combattere contro i figli d'Israele.

15 A nd the sons of Benjamin number themselves on that day; out of the cities twenty and six thousand men drawing sword, apart from the inhabitants of Gibeah, numbered themselves, seven hundred chosen men;

Quel giorno i figli di Beniamino chiamati a raccolta dalle loro città erano in numero i ventiseimila uomini abili a maneggiar la spada, senza contare gli abitanti di Ghibeah che ammontavano a settecento uomini scelti.

16 a mong all this people seven hundred chosen men, bound of their right hand, each of these slinging with a stone at the hair, and he doth not err.

Fra tutta questa gente c'erano settecento uomini scelti, che erano mancini. Tutti costoro erano capaci di lanciare un sasso con la fionda ad un capello, senza fallire il colpo.

17 A nd the men of Israel numbered themselves, apart from Benjamin, four hundred thousand men, drawing sword, each of these a man of war.

Ora gli uomini d'Israele chiamati a raccolta, non compresi quelli di Beniamino erano in numero di quattrocentomila uomini abili a maneggiare la spada, tutta gente di guerra.

18 A nd they rise and go up to Beth-El, and ask of God, and the sons of Israel say, `Who doth go up for us at the commencement to battle with the sons of Benjamin?' and Jehovah saith, `Judah -- at the commencement.'

Così i figli d'Israele si mossero, salirono a Bethel e consultarono DIO, dicendo: «Chi di noi salirà per primo a combattere contro i figli di Beniamino?. L'Eterno rispose: «Giuda salirà per primo.

19 A nd the sons of Israel rise in the morning, and encamp against Gibeah,

Il mattino dopo i figli d'Israele si mossero e si accamparono contro Ghibeah.

20 a nd the men of Israel go out to battle with Benjamin, and the men of Israel set themselves in array with them, battle against Gibeah,

Gli uomini d'Israele uscirono così per combattere contro Beniamino e si disposero in ordine di battaglia contro di loro presso Ghibeah.

21 a nd the sons of Benjamin come out from Gibeah, and destroy in Israel on that day two and twenty thousand men -- to the earth.

Allora i figli di Beniamino uscirono da Ghibeah e in quel giorno stesero morti al suolo ventiduemila uomini d'Israele.

22 A nd the people, the men of Israel, strengthen themselves, and add to set the battle in array in the place where they arranged themselves on the first day.

Ma il popolo, gli uomini d'Israele, ripresero coraggio e si disposero di nuovo in ordine di battaglia nello stesso luogo dove si erano schierati il primo giorno.

23 A nd the sons of Israel go up and weep before Jehovah till the evening, and ask of Jehovah, saying, `Do I add to draw nigh to battle with the sons of Benjamin, my brother?' And Jehovah saith, `Go up against him.'

Allora i figli d'Israele salirono e piansero davanti all'Eterno fino alla sera, e consultarono l'Eterno, dicendo: «Devo continuare a combattere contro i figli di Beniamino mio fratello?. L'Eterno rispose: «Salite contro di loro».

24 A nd the sons of Israel draw near unto the sons of Benjamin on the second day,

I figli d'Israele vennero a battaglia con i figli di Beniamino una seconda volta.

25 a nd Benjamin cometh out to meet them from Gibeah on the second day, and destroy among the sons of Israel again eighteen thousand men -- to the earth; all these are drawing sword.

I Beniaminiti uscirono una seconda volta da Ghibeah contro di loro e stesero morti al suolo altri diciottomila uomini dei figli d'Israele, tutti abili a maneggiar la spada.

26 A nd all the sons of Israel go up, even all the people, and come in to Beth-El, and weep, and sit there before Jehovah, and fast on that day till the evening, and cause to ascend burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before Jehovah.

Allora tutti i figli d'Israele, cioè tutto il popolo, salirono a Bethel e piansero; rimasero là davanti all'Eterno e digiunarono quel giorno fino a sera, e offrirono olocausti e sacrifici di ringraziamento davanti all'Eterno.

27 A nd the sons of Israel ask of Jehovah, -- and there the ark of the covenant of God in those days,

Poi i figli d'Israele consultarono l'Eterno (l'arca del patto di DIO in quel tempo era là,

28 a nd Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, is standing before it in those days -- saying, `Do I add again to go out to battle with the sons of Benjamin, my brother, or do I cease?' And Jehovah saith, `Go up, for to-morrow I give him into thy hand.'

e Finehas, figlio di Eleazar, figlio di Aaronne, prestava servizio in quel tempo davanti ad essa) e dissero: «Devo continuare ancora a uscire a combattere contro i figli di Beniamino mio fratello, o devo smettere?. L'Eterno rispose: «Salite, poiché domani li darò nelle vostre mani.

29 A nd Israel setteth liers in wait against Gibeah, round about,

Così Israele tese un'imboscata tutt'intorno a Ghibeah.

30 a nd the sons of Israel go up against the sons of Benjamin, on the third day, and arrange themselves against Gibeah, as time by time.

I figli d'Israele salirono per la terza volta contro i figli di Beniamino e si disposero in ordine di battaglia presso Ghibeah come le altre volte.

31 A nd the sons of Benjamin come out to meet the people; they have been drawn away out of the city, and begin to smite of the people -- wounded as time by time, in the highways (of which one is going up to Beth-El, and the other to Gibeah in the field), about thirty men of Israel.

I figli di Beniamino uscirono contro il popolo e si lasciarono attirare lontano dalla città; e cominciarono a colpire e ad uccidere, come le altre volte, alcuni del popolo d'Israele per le strade, (delle quali una sale a Bethel e l'altra a Ghibeah) per la campagna; uccisero circa trenta uomini.

32 A nd the sons of Benjamin say, `They are smitten before us as at the beginning;' but the sons of Israel said, `Let us flee, and draw them away out of the city, unto the highways.'

Così i figli di Beniamino dissero: «Eccoli sconfitti davanti a noi come la prima volta!». Ma i figli d'Israele dissero: «Fuggiamo e attiriamoli lontano dalla città sulle strade maestre!».

33 A nd all the men of Israel have risen from their place, and arrange themselves at Baal-Tamar, and the ambush of Israel is coming forth out of its place, out of the meadow of Gibeah.

Allora tutti gli uomini d'Israele si mossero dalla loro posizione e si disposero in ordine di battaglia a Baal-Thamar; intanto gli uomini d'Israele in agguato sbucarono dai loro nascondigli, posti nella pianura di Ghibeah.

34 A nd they come in over against Gibeah -- ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel -- and the battle grievous, and they have not known that the evil is striking against them.

Diecimila uomini scelti in tutto Israele avanzarono contro Ghibeah. Il combattimento fu aspro, ma i Beniaminiti non si accorgevano del disastro che stava per colpirli.

35 A nd Jehovah smiteth Benjamin before Israel, and the sons of Israel destroy in Benjamin, on that day, twenty and five thousand, and a hundred men; all these drawing sword.

Così l'Eterno sconfisse Beniamino davanti ad Israele; e i figli d'Israele uccisero quel giorno venticinquemilacento uomini di Beniamino, tutti abili a maneggiar la spada.

36 A nd the sons of Benjamin see that they have been smitten -- and the men of Israel give place to Benjamin, for they have trusted unto the ambush which they had set against Gibeah,

Così i figli di Beniamino si accorsero di essere sconfitti. Gli Israeliti avevano ceduto terreno a Beniamino, perché confidavano negli uomini che avevano posto in agguato presso Ghibeah.

37 a nd the ambush have hasted, and push against Gibeah, and the ambush draweth itself out, and smiteth the whole of the city by the mouth of the sword.

Gli uomini in agguato si gettarono prontamente su Ghibeah; essi avanzarono e passarono a fil di spada l'intera città.

38 A nd there was the appointed sign to the men of Israel with the ambush -- their causing to go up a great volume of smoke from the city.

C'era un segnale convenuto fra gli uomini d'Israele e quelli in agguato: questi dovevano far salire dalla città una grande colonna di fumo.

39 A nd the men of Israel turn in battle, and Benjamin hath begun to smite the wounded among the men of Israel, about thirty men, for they said, `Surely they are utterly smitten before us, as the first battle;

Gli uomini d'Israele avevano dunque voltato le spalle nel combattimento; e quei di Beniamino avevano cominciato a colpire e uccidere circa trenta uomini d'Israele. Essi infatti dicevano: «Certamente essi sono interamente sconfitti davanti a noi come nella prima battaglia!».

40 a nd the volume hath begun to go up from the city -- a pillar of smoke -- and Benjamin turneth behind, and lo, gone up hath the perfection of the city toward the heavens.

Ma quando il segnale della colonna di fumo cominciò ad alzarsi dalla città, quei di Beniamino si volsero indietro, ed ecco che tutta la città saliva in fiamme verso il cielo.

41 A nd the men of Israel have turned, and the men of Benjamin are troubled, for they have seen that the evil hath stricken against them --

Allora gli uomini d'Israele si voltarono, e gli uomini di Beniamino furono presi da gran spavento, vedendo il disastro che li aveva colpiti.

42 a nd they turn before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness, and the battle hath followed them; and those who from the city are destroying them in their midst;

Perciò si diedero alla fuga davanti agli uomini d'Israele in direzione del deserto, ma non poterono sottrarsi alla battaglia; e quelli che uscivano dalla città piombarono nel loro mezzo e li massacrarono.

43 t hey have compassed the Benjamites -- they have pursued them -- with ease they have trodden them down till over-against Gibeah, at the sun-rising.

Circondarono i Beniaminiti, li inseguirono senza tregua e li incalzarono fino di fronte a Ghibeah dal lato est.

44 A nd there fall of Benjamin eighteen thousand men -- the whole of these men of valour;

Caddero dei Beniaminiti diciottomila uomini, tutti uomini di valore.

45 a nd they turn and flee toward the wilderness, unto the rock of Rimmon; and they glean of them in the highways five thousand men, and follow after them unto Gidom, and smite of them two thousand men.

I superstiti voltarono le spalle e fuggirono verso il deserto, in direzione del masso di Rimmon; ed essi ne racimolarono per le strade cinquemila, li incalzarono fino a Ghidom e ne uccisero altri duemila.

46 A nd all those falling of Benjamin are twenty and five thousand men drawing sword, on that day -- the whole of these men of valour;

Così il numero totale dei Beniaminiti che caddero quel giorno fu di venticinquemila, abili a maneggiare la spada, tutti uomini di valore.

47 a nd there turn and flee into the wilderness, unto the rock of Rimmon six hundred men, and they dwell in the rock Rimmon four months.

Seicento uomini, che avevano voltato le spalle ed erano fuggiti verso il deserto in direzione del masso di Rimmon, rimasero al masso di Rimmon quattro mesi.

48 A nd the men of Israel have turned back unto the sons of Benjamin, and smite them by the mouth of the sword out of the city, -- men unto cattle, unto all that is found; also all the cities which are found they have sent into fire.

Poi gl'Israeliti tornarono contro i figli di Beniamino e passarono a fil di spada l'intera città, compreso il bestiame e tutto ciò che trovavano; e diedero alle fiamme tutte le città che trovavano.
