1 A fter these things hath the word of Jehovah been unto Abram in a vision, saying, `Fear not, Abram, I a shield to thee, thy reward exceeding great.'

Dopo queste cose, la parola dell'Eterno fu rivolta in visione ad Abramo, dicendo: «Non temere o Abramo, io sono il tuo scudo, e la tua ricompensa sarà grandissima».

2 A nd Abram saith, `Lord Jehovah, what dost Thou give to me, and I am going childless? and an acquired son in my house is Demmesek Eliezer.'

Ma Abramo disse: Signore, Eterno, che mi darai, perché sono senza figli e l'erede della mia casa è Eliezer di Damasco?».

3 A nd Abram saith, `Lo, to me Thou hast not given seed, and lo, a domestic doth heir me.'

Poi Abramo soggiunse: «tu non mi hai dato alcuna discendenza; Ora ecco, uno nato in casa mia sarà mio erede».

4 A nd lo, the word of Jehovah unto him, saying, `This doth not heir thee; but he who cometh out from thy bowels, he doth heir thee;'

Allora la parola dell'Eterno gli fu rivolta, dicendo: Questi non sarà tuo erede; ma colui che uscirà dalle tue viscere sarà tuo erede».

5 a nd He bringeth him out without, and saith, `Look attentively, I pray thee, towards the heavens, and count the stars, if thou art able to count them;' and He saith to him, `Thus is thy seed.'

Poi lo condusse fuori e gli disse: «Mira il cielo e conta le stelle, se le puoi contare», quindi aggiunse: «Così sarà la tua discendenza».

6 A nd he hath believed in Jehovah, and He reckoneth it to him -- righteousness.

Ed egli credette all'Eterno, che glielo mise in conto di giustizia.

7 A nd He saith unto him, `I Jehovah who brought thee out from Ur of the Chaldees, to give to thee this land to possess it;'

Poi l'Eterno gli disse: «Io sono l'Eterno che ti ho fatto uscire da Ur dei Caldei, per darti questo paese in eredità».

8 a nd he saith, `Lord Jehovah, whereby do I know that I possess it?'

E Abramo chiese: «Signore, Eterno da che cosa posso io sapere che l'avrò in eredità?».

9 A nd He saith unto him, `Take for Me a heifer of three years, and a she-goat of three years, and a ram of three years, and a turtle-dove, and a young bird;'

Allora l'Eterno gli disse: «Portami una giovenca di tre anni, una capra di tre anni, un montone di tre anni, una tortora e un piccione giovane».

10 a nd he taketh to him all these, and separateth them in the midst, and putteth each piece over against its fellow, but the bird he hath not divided;

Allora Abramo gli portò tutti questi animali, li divise in due e pose ciascuna metà di fronte all'altra; ma non divise gli uccelli.

11 a nd the ravenous birds come down upon the carcases, and Abram causeth them to turn back.

Ora alcuni uccelli rapaci calarono sulle bestie morte ma Abramo li scacciò.

12 A nd the sun is about to go in, and deep sleep hath fallen upon Abram, and lo, a terror of great darkness is falling upon him;

Verso il tramontare del sole, un profondo sonno cadde su Abramo; ed ecco, uno spavento una oscurità profonda caddero su di lui.

13 a nd He saith to Abram, `knowing -- know that thy seed is a sojourner in a land not theirs, and they have served them, and they have afflicted them four hundred years,

Allora l'Eterno disse ad Abramo: «Sappi per certo che i tuoi discendenti dimoreranno come stranieri in un paese che non sarà loro, e vi saranno schiavi e saranno oppressi per quattrocento anni.

14 a nd the nation also whom they serve I judge, and after this they go out with great substance;

Ma io giudicherò la nazione di cui saranno stati servi; dopo questo, essi usciranno con grandi ricchezze.

15 a nd thou -- thou comest in unto thy fathers in peace; thou art buried in a good old age;

Quanto a te, te ne andrai in pace presso i tuoi padri, e sarai sepolto dopo una bella vecchiaia.

16 a nd the fourth generation doth turn back hither, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.'

Ma alla quarta generazione essi torneranno qui, perché l'iniquità degli Amorei non è ancora giunta al colmo».

17 A nd it cometh to pass -- the sun hath gone in, and thick darkness hath been -- and lo, a furnace of smoke, and a lamp of fire, which hath passed over between those pieces.

Ora come il sole si fu coricato e scesero le tenebre, ecco una fornace fumante ed una torcia di fuoco passare in mezzo agli animali divisi.

18 I n that day hath Jehovah made with Abram a covenant, saying, `To thy seed I have given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Phrat,

In quel giorno l'Eterno fece un patto con Abramo dicendo: «Io do alla tua discendenza questo paese, dal torrente d'Egitto al grande fiume, il fiume Eufrate:

19 w ith the Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite,

i Kenei i Kenizei, i Kadmonei,

20 a nd the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim,

gli Hittei, i Perezei, i Refei,

21 a nd the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.'

gli Amorei, i Cananei, i Ghirgasei e i Gebusei».
