1 T o the Overseer. -- By sons of Korah. An Instruction. O God, with our ears we have heard, Our fathers have recounted to us, The work Thou didst work in their days, In the days of old.

2 T hou, Thy hand, nations hast dispossessed. And Thou dost plant them. Thou afflictest peoples, and sendest them away.

Tu per stabilirli con la tua mano hai spodestato le nazioni, hai sradicato dei popoli per far posto a loro.

3 F or, not by their sword Possessed they the land, And their arm gave not salvation to them, But Thy right hand, and Thine arm, And the light of Thy countenance, Because Thou hadst accepted them.

Infatti non fu con la loro spada che conquistarono il paese, né fu il loro braccio che li salvò, ma fu la tua destra, il tuo braccio e la luce del tuo volto, perché li gradivi.

4 T hou He, my king, O God, Command the deliverances of Jacob.

Sei tu il mio re, o DIO, che decidi le vittorie per Giacobbe.

5 B y Thee our adversaries we do push, By Thy name tread down our withstanders,

Per mezzo di te abbatteremo i nostri nemici; nel tuo nome calpesteremo coloro che si levano contro di noi.

6 F or, not in my bow do I trust, And my sword doth not save me.

Poiché non confido nel mio arco, e non sarà la mia spada a salvarmi.

7 F or Thou hast saved us from our adversaries, And those hating us Thou hast put to shame.

Ma sei tu che ci salvi dai nostri nemici e che copri di vergogna coloro che ci odiano.

8 I n God we have boasted all the day, And Thy name to the age we thank. Selah.

Noi ci glorieremo in DIO ogni giorno, e celebreremo il tuo nome per sempre. (Sela)

9 I n anger Thou hast cast off and causest us to blush, And goest not forth with our hosts.

Ma tu ci hai scacciati e ci hai coperti di vergogna, e non esci piú coi nostri eserciti

10 T hou causest us to turn backward from an adversary, And those hating us, Have spoiled for themselves.

Tu ci hai fatto voltare le spalle davanti al nemico, e quelli che ci odiano ci hanno depredato.

11 T hou makest us food like sheep, And among nations Thou hast scattered us.

Tu ci hai dati via come pecore da macello, e ci hai dispersi fra le nazioni.

12 T hou sellest Thy people -- without wealth, And hast not become great by their price.

Tu hai venduto il tuo popolo per niente, e non hai fatto alcun guadagno sulla loro vendita.

13 T hou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, A scorn and a reproach to our surrounders.

Tu ci hai resi la vergogna dei nostri vicini, la beffa e lo scherno di chi ci sta intorno.

14 T hou makest us a simile among nations, A shaking of the head among peoples.

Tu ci hai resi lo zimbello delle nazioni; nei nostri confronti i popoli scuotono il capo.

15 A ll the day my confusion before me, And the shame of my face hath covered me.

La mia infamia mi sta sempre davanti, e la mia faccia è coperta di vergogna,

16 B ecause of the voice of a reproacher and reviler, Because of an enemy and a self-avenger.

a motivo di chi m'insulta ed oltraggia, a causa del nemico e di chi vuole vendetta.

17 A ll this met us, and we did not forget Thee, Nor have we dealt falsely in Thy covenant.

Tutto questo ci è venuto addosso, ma noi non ti abbiamo dimenticato e non abbiamo tradito il tuo patto.

18 W e turn not backward our heart, Nor turn aside doth our step from Thy path.

Il nostro cuore non si è rivolto indietro, e i nostri passi non si sono allontanati dalla tua via;

19 B ut Thou hast smitten us in a place of dragons, And dost cover us over with death-shade.

ma tu ci hai frantumati, cacciandoci in luoghi di sciacalli e ci hai coperto dell'ombra di morte.

20 I f we have forgotten the name of our God, And spread our hands to a strange God,

Se noi avessimo dimenticato il nome del nostro DIO e avessimo teso le mani verso un dio straniero,

21 D oth not God search out this? For He knoweth the secrets of the heart.

non l'avrebbe DIO scoperto? Egli infatti conosce i segreti del cuore.

22 S urely, for Thy sake we have been slain all the day, Reckoned as sheep of the slaughter.

Sí, per causa tua noi siamo messi a morte ogni giorno, e siamo considerati come pecore da macello.

23 S tir up -- why dost Thou sleep, O Lord? Awake, cast us not off for ever.

Risvegliati! Perché dormi, o Signore? Destati, non respingerci per sempre.

24 W hy Thy face hidest Thou? Thou forgettest our afflictions and our oppression,

Perché nascondi la tua faccia, e dimentichi la nostra afflizione e la nostra oppressione?

25 F or bowed to the dust hath our soul, Cleaved to the earth hath our belly.

Poiché le nostre anime sono state abbassate fino nella polvere, e il nostro corpo è incollato a terra.

26 A rise, a help to us, And ransom us for thy kindness' sake.
