1 W ords of a preacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem:

Le parole del Predicatore, figlio di Davide, re di Gerusalemme.

2 V anity of vanities, said the Preacher, Vanity of vanities: the whole vanity.

«Vanità delle vanità», dice il Predicatore

3 W hat advantage to man by all his labour that he laboureth at under the sun?

Vanità delle vanità; tutto è vanità», Che vantaggio ha l'uomo da tutta la sua fatica in cui si affatica sotto il sole?

4 A generation is going, and a generation is coming, and the earth to the age is standing.

Una generazione va, una generazione viene, ma la terra rimane in eterno,

5 A lso, the sun hath risen, and the sun hath gone in, and unto its place panting it is rising there.

Anche il sole sorge e poi tramonta, e si affretta verso il luogo da dove sorge di nuovo.

6 G oing unto the south, and turning round unto the north, turning round, turning round, the wind is going, and by its circuits the wind hath returned.

Il vento soffia verso il mezzogiorno, poi gira verso settentrione; gira e rigira continuamente e ritorna a fare gli stessi giri.

7 A ll the streams are going unto the sea, and the sea is not full; unto a place whither the streams are going, thither they are turning back to go.

Tutti i fiumi corrono al mare, ma il mare non si riempie mai; al luogo da cui i fiumi provengono, là essi ritornano nuovamente.

8 A ll these things are wearying; a man is not able to speak, the eye is not satisfied by seeing, nor filled is the ear from hearing.

Tutte le cose richiedono fatica, piú di quel che l'uomo possa dire, l'occhio non si sazia mai di guardare, né l'orecchio è mai sazio di udire.

9 W hat that which hath been? it that which is, and what that which hath been done? it that which is done, and there is not an entirely new thing under the sun.

Quello che è stato è quel che sarà; quello che è stato fatto è quel che si farà; non c'è nulla di nuovo sotto il sole.

10 T here is a thing of which saith: `See this, it new!' already it hath been in the ages that were before us!

C'è qualcosa di cui si possa dire: «Guarda, questo è nuovo!»? Quella cosa esisteva già nei secoli che ci hanno preceduto.

11 T here is not a remembrance of former; and also of the latter that are, there is no remembrance of them with those that are at the last.

Non rimane alcun ricordo delle cose passate, e cosí non rimarrà alcun ricordo delle cose che accadranno tra coloro che verranno in seguito.

12 I , a preacher, have been king over Israel in Jerusalem.

Io, il Predicatore, sono stato re d'Israele, in Gerusalemme,

13 A nd I have given my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that hath been done under the heavens. It a sad travail God hath given to the sons of man to be humbled by it.

e ho applicato il mio cuore a cercare e a investigare con sapienza tutto ciò che si fa sotto il cielo; questa è un'occupazione penosa, che DIO ha dato ai figli degli uomini perché vi si affatichino.

14 I have seen all the works that have been done under the sun, and lo, the whole vanity and vexation of spirit!

Io ho visto tutte le cose che si fanno sotto il sole, ed ecco tutto è vanità e un cercare di afferrare il vento.

15 A crooked thing is not able to make straight, and a lacking thing is not able to be numbered.

Ciò che è storto non si può raddrizzare e ciò che manca non si può contare.

16 I -- I spake with my heart, saying, `I, lo, I have magnified and added wisdom above every one who hath been before me at Jerusalem, and my heart hath seen abundantly wisdom and knowledge.

Io ho parlato col mio cuore, dicendo: «Ecco, io ho ottenuto grandezza e acquistato maggiore sapienza di tutti quelli che hanno regnato prima di me in Gerusalemme e il mio cuore ha visto molta sapienza e conoscenza».

17 A nd I give my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I have known that even this vexation of spirit;

E ho applicato il mio cuore a conoscere la sapienza, come pure a conoscere la follia e la stoltezza; e ho compreso che anche questo è un cercare di afferrare il vento.

18 f or, in abundance of wisdom abundance of sadness, and he who addeth knowledge addeth pain.'

Poiché dove C'è molta sapienza c'è molto affanno e chi aumenta la conoscenza, aumenta il dolore.
