1 A nd Joseph hath been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, head of the executioners, an Egyptian man, buyeth him out of the hands of the Ishmaelites who have brought him thither.

Or Giuseppe fu portato in Egitto; e Potifar, ufficiale del Faraone, capitano delle guardie, un Egiziano, lo compró dagli Ismaeliti che lo avevano portato laggiú.

2 A nd Jehovah is with Joseph, and he is a prosperous man, and he is in the house of his lord the Egyptian,

l'Eterno fu con Giuseppe; ed egli prosperava e stava nella casa del suo padrone, l'Egiziano.

3 a nd his lord seeth that Jehovah is with him, and all that he is doing Jehovah is causing to prosper in his hand,

E il suo padrone vide che l'Eterno era con lui, e che l'Eterno faceva prosperare nelle sue mani tutto ciò che faceva.

4 a nd Joseph findeth grace in his eyes and serveth him, and he appointeth him over his house, and all that he hath he hath given into his hand.

Così Giuseppe trovó grazia agli occhi di lui ed entró al servizio personale di Potifar, che lo fece soprintendente della sua casa e mise nelle sue mani tutto quanto possedeva.

5 A nd it cometh to pass from the time that he hath appointed him over his house, and over all that he hath, that Jehovah blesseth the house of the Egyptian for Joseph's sake, and the blessing of Jehovah is on all that he hath, in the house, and in the field;

Dal momento che l'ebbe fatto soprintendente della sua casa e di tutto quanto possedeva, l'Eterno benedisse la casa dell'Egiziano a motivo di Giuseppe; e la benedizione dell'Eterno fu su tutto quanto egli aveva, in casa e in campagna.

6 a nd he leaveth all that he hath in the hand of Joseph, and he hath not known anything that he hath, except the bread which he is eating. And Joseph is of a fair form, and of a fair appearance.

Così Potifar lasciò tutto quanto aveva nelle mani di Giuseppe e non si preoccupava piú di cosa alcuna, tranne del suo proprio cibo. Or Giuseppe era bello di forma e di bell'aspetto.

7 A nd it cometh to pass after these things, that his lord's wife lifteth up her eyes unto Joseph, and saith, `Lie with me;'

Dopo queste cose. avvenne che la moglie del suo padrone mise gli occhi su Giuseppe e gli disse: «Coricati con me».

8 a nd he refuseth, and saith unto his lord's wife, `Lo, my lord hath not known what with me in the house, and all that he hath he hath given into my hand;

Ma egli rifiutò e disse alla moglie del suo padrone: «Ecco, il mio padrone non si preoccupa di quanto ha lasciato in casa con me e ha messo nelle mie mani tutto quanto ha.

9 n one is greater in this house than I, and he hath not withheld from me anything, except thee, because thou his wife; and how shall I do this great evil? -- then have I sinned against God.'

Non c'è alcuno piú grande di me in questa casa; egli non mi ha proibito nulla tranne te perché sei sua moglie. Come dunque potrei io fare questo grande male e peccare contro Dio?».

10 A nd it cometh to pass at her speaking unto Joseph day day, that he hath not hearkened unto her, to lie near her, to be with her;

Nonostante il fatto che lei ne parlasse a Giuseppe ogni giorno. egli non acconsentì a coricarsi con lei né a darsi a lei.

11 a nd it cometh to pass about this day, that he goeth into the house to do his work, and there is none of the men of the house there in the house,

Un giorno avvenne che egli entrò in casa per fare il suo lavoro, e non vi era in casa nessuno dei domestici.

12 a nd she catcheth him by his garment, saying, `Lie with me;' and he leaveth his garment in her hand, and fleeth, and goeth without.

Allora ella lo afferrò per la veste, e gli disse: «Coricati con me». Ma egli le lasciò in mano la sua veste. fuggì e corse fuori.

13 A nd it cometh to pass when she seeth that he hath left his garment in her hand, and fleeth without,

Quando ella vide che egli le aveva lasciato in mano la sua veste e che era fuggito fuori.

14 t hat she calleth for the men of her house, and speaketh to them, saying, `See, he hath brought in to us a man, a Hebrew, to play with us; he hath come in unto me, to lie with me, and I call with a loud voice,

Chiamò i suoi domestici, e disse loro: «Vedete, egli ci ha portato in casa un Ebreo per prendersi giuoco di noi; egli è venuto da me per coricarsi con me, ma io ho gridato a gran voce.

15 a nd it cometh to pass, when he heareth that I have lifted up my voice and call, that he leaveth his garment near me, and fleeth, and goeth without.'

Come egli mi ha udito alzare la voce, gridare, ha lasciato la sua veste vicino a me, è fuggito ed è corso fuori».

16 A nd she placeth his garment near her, until the coming in of his lord unto his house.

Così ella tenne accanto a sé la veste di lui, finché il suo padrone non fu tornato a casa.

17 A nd she speaketh unto him according to these words, saying, `The Hebrew servant whom thou hast brought unto us, hath come in unto me to play with me;

Allora ella gli parlò in questa maniera: «Quel servo Ebreo, che tu ci hai portato, è venuto da me per prendersi giuoco di me.

18 a nd it cometh to pass, when I lift my voice and call, that he leaveth his garment near me, and fleeth without.'

Ma come io ho alzato la voce e ho gridato egli ha lasciato la sua veste vicino a me ed è fuggito fuori».

19 A nd it cometh to pass when his lord heareth the words of his wife, which she hath spoken unto him, saying, `According to these things hath thy servant done to me,' that his anger burneth;

Così, quando il suo padrone udì le parole di sua moglie che gli parlava in questo modo dicendo: «Il tuo servo mi ha fatto questo!», si accese d'ira.

20 a nd Joseph's lord taketh him, and putteth him unto the round-house, a place where the king's prisoners bound; and he is there in the round-house.

Allora il padrone di Giuseppe lo prese e lo mise in prigione nel luogo dove erano rinchiusi i carcerati del re. Egli rimase quindi in quella prigione.

21 A nd Jehovah is with Joseph, and stretcheth out kindness unto him, and putteth his grace in the eyes of the chief of the round-house;

Ma l'Eterno fu con Giuseppe e usò verso di lui benevolenza, cattivandogli le grazie del direttore della prigione.

22 a nd the chief of the round-house giveth into the hand of Joseph all the prisoners who in the round-house, and of all that they are doing there, he hath been doer;

Così il direttore della prigione affidò a Giuseppe tutti i detenuti che erano nel carcere; ed egli era responsabile di tutto quanto si faceva là dentro.

23 t he chief of the round-house seeth not anything under his hand, because Jehovah with him, and that which he is doing Jehovah is causing to prosper.

Il direttore della prigione non controllava piú nulla di quanto era affidato a Giuseppe, perché l'Eterno era con lui, e l'Eterno faceva prosperare tutto quanto egli faceva.
