1 A nd Joseph hath been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, head of the executioners, an Egyptian man, buyeth him out of the hands of the Ishmaelites who have brought him thither.

Giuseppe fu portato in Egitto; e Potifar, ufficiale del faraone, capitano delle guardie, un Egiziano, lo comprò da quegli Ismaeliti che ce l’avevano condotto.

2 A nd Jehovah is with Joseph, and he is a prosperous man, and he is in the house of his lord the Egyptian,

Il Signore era con Giuseppe: a lui riusciva bene ogni cosa e stava in casa del suo padrone egiziano.

3 a nd his lord seeth that Jehovah is with him, and all that he is doing Jehovah is causing to prosper in his hand,

Il suo padrone vide che il Signore era con lui e che il Signore gli faceva prosperare nelle mani tutto ciò che intraprendeva.

4 a nd Joseph findeth grace in his eyes and serveth him, and he appointeth him over his house, and all that he hath he hath given into his hand.

Giuseppe trovò grazia agli occhi di lui e si occupava del servizio personale di Potifar, il quale lo fece maggiordomo della sua casa e gli affidò l’amministrazione di tutto quello che possedeva.

5 A nd it cometh to pass from the time that he hath appointed him over his house, and over all that he hath, that Jehovah blesseth the house of the Egyptian for Joseph's sake, and the blessing of Jehovah is on all that he hath, in the house, and in the field;

Dal momento che l’ebbe fatto maggiordomo della sua casa e gli ebbe affidato tutto quello che possedeva, il Signore benedisse la casa dell’Egiziano per amore di Giuseppe; la benedizione del Signore si posò su tutto ciò che egli possedeva, in casa e in campagna.

6 a nd he leaveth all that he hath in the hand of Joseph, and he hath not known anything that he hath, except the bread which he is eating. And Joseph is of a fair form, and of a fair appearance.

Potifar lasciò tutto quello che aveva nelle mani di Giuseppe; non s’occupava più di nulla, tranne del cibo che mangiava. Giuseppe era avvenente e di bell’aspetto. Giuseppe in prigione

7 A nd it cometh to pass after these things, that his lord's wife lifteth up her eyes unto Joseph, and saith, `Lie with me;'

Dopo queste cose, la moglie del padrone di Giuseppe gli mise gli occhi addosso e gli disse: «Unisciti a me!»

8 a nd he refuseth, and saith unto his lord's wife, `Lo, my lord hath not known what with me in the house, and all that he hath he hath given into my hand;

Ma egli rifiutò e disse alla moglie del suo padrone: «Ecco, il mio padrone non mi chiede conto di quanto è nella casa e mi ha affidato tutto quello che ha.

9 n one is greater in this house than I, and he hath not withheld from me anything, except thee, because thou his wife; and how shall I do this great evil? -- then have I sinned against God.'

In questa casa egli stesso non è più grande di me e nulla mi ha vietato, se non te, perché sei sua moglie. Come dunque potrei fare questo gran male e peccare contro Dio?»

10 A nd it cometh to pass at her speaking unto Joseph day day, that he hath not hearkened unto her, to lie near her, to be with her;

Benché lei gliene parlasse ogni giorno, Giuseppe non acconsentì a unirsi né a stare con lei.

11 a nd it cometh to pass about this day, that he goeth into the house to do his work, and there is none of the men of the house there in the house,

Un giorno egli entrò in casa per fare il suo lavoro; lì non c’era nessuno della gente di casa;

12 a nd she catcheth him by his garment, saying, `Lie with me;' and he leaveth his garment in her hand, and fleeth, and goeth without.

allora lei lo afferrò per la veste e gli disse: «Unisciti a me!» Ma egli le lasciò in mano la veste e fuggì.

13 A nd it cometh to pass when she seeth that he hath left his garment in her hand, and fleeth without,

Quando lei vide che egli le aveva lasciato la veste in mano e che era fuggito,

14 t hat she calleth for the men of her house, and speaketh to them, saying, `See, he hath brought in to us a man, a Hebrew, to play with us; he hath come in unto me, to lie with me, and I call with a loud voice,

chiamò la gente di casa sua e disse: «Vedete, ci ha portato un Ebreo perché questi si prendesse gioco di noi; egli è venuto da me per unirsi a me, ma io ho gridato a gran voce.

15 a nd it cometh to pass, when he heareth that I have lifted up my voice and call, that he leaveth his garment near me, and fleeth, and goeth without.'

E com’egli ha udito che io alzavo la voce e gridavo, mi ha lasciato qui la sua veste ed è fuggito».

16 A nd she placeth his garment near her, until the coming in of his lord unto his house.

E si tenne accanto la veste di lui finché il suo padrone non tornò a casa.

17 A nd she speaketh unto him according to these words, saying, `The Hebrew servant whom thou hast brought unto us, hath come in unto me to play with me;

Allora gli parlò in questa maniera: «Quel servo ebreo che hai condotto in casa è venuto da me per prendersi gioco di me.

18 a nd it cometh to pass, when I lift my voice and call, that he leaveth his garment near me, and fleeth without.'

Ma appena io ho alzato la voce e ho gridato, egli mi ha lasciato qui la sua veste ed è fuggito».

19 A nd it cometh to pass when his lord heareth the words of his wife, which she hath spoken unto him, saying, `According to these things hath thy servant done to me,' that his anger burneth;

Quando il padrone di Giuseppe udì le parole di sua moglie che gli diceva: «Il tuo servo mi ha fatto questo!» si accese d’ira.

20 a nd Joseph's lord taketh him, and putteth him unto the round-house, a place where the king's prisoners bound; and he is there in the round-house.

Il padrone di Giuseppe lo prese e lo mise nella prigione, nel luogo dove si tenevano chiusi i carcerati del re. Egli era dunque là in quella prigione.

21 A nd Jehovah is with Joseph, and stretcheth out kindness unto him, and putteth his grace in the eyes of the chief of the round-house;

E il Signore fu con Giuseppe, gli mostrò il suo favore e gli fece trovar grazia agli occhi del governatore della prigione.

22 a nd the chief of the round-house giveth into the hand of Joseph all the prisoners who in the round-house, and of all that they are doing there, he hath been doer;

Così il governatore della prigione affidò alla sorveglianza di Giuseppe tutti i detenuti che erano nel carcere; e nulla si faceva senza di lui.

23 t he chief of the round-house seeth not anything under his hand, because Jehovah with him, and that which he is doing Jehovah is causing to prosper.

Il governatore della prigione non rivedeva niente di quello che era affidato a lui, perché il Signore era con lui, e il Signore faceva prosperare tutto quello che egli intraprendeva.
