1 T he word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying,

2 R ise, and thou hast gone down the potter's house, and there I cause thee to hear My words;

«Àlzati, scendi in casa del vasaio, e là ti farò udire le mie parole».

3 a nd I go down the potter's house, and lo, he is doing a work on the stones,

Allora io scesi in casa del vasaio, ed ecco, egli stava lavorando alla ruota.

4 a nd marred is the vessel that he is making, as clay in the hand of the potter, and he hath turned and he maketh it another vessel, as it was right in the eyes of the potter to make.

Il vaso che faceva si guastò, come succede all’argilla in mano del vasaio; da capo ne fece un altro come a lui parve bene di farlo.

5 A nd there is a word of Jehovah to me, saying:

La parola del Signore mi fu rivolta in questi termini:

6 A s this potter am I not able to do to you? O house of Israel, an affirmation of Jehovah. Lo, as clay in the hand of the potter, So ye in My hand, O house of Israel.

«Casa d’Israele, non posso io fare di voi quello che fa questo vasaio?», dice il Signore. «Ecco, quel che l’argilla è in mano al vasaio, voi lo siete in mano mia, casa d’Israele!

7 T he moment I speak concerning a nation, And concerning a kingdom, To pluck up and to break down, and to destroy,

A un dato momento io parlo riguardo a una nazione, riguardo a un regno, di sradicare, di abbattere, di distruggere;

8 A nd that nation hath turned from its evil, Because I have spoken against it, Then I have repented of the evil that I thought to do to it.

ma se quella nazione contro la quale ho parlato si converte dalla sua malvagità, io mi pento del male che avevo pensato di farle.

9 A nd the moment I speak concerning a nation, And concerning a kingdom, to build, and to plant,

In un altro momento io parlo riguardo a una nazione, a un regno, di costruire e di piantare;

10 A nd it hath done the evil thing in Mine eyes, So as not to hearken to My voice, Then I have repented of the good That I have spoken of doing to it.

ma se quella nazione fa ciò che è male ai miei occhi senza dare ascolto alla mia voce, io mi pento del bene di cui avevo parlato di colmarla. Insensibilità di Giuda

11 A nd now, speak, I pray thee, unto men of Judah, And against inhabitants of Jerusalem, Saying: Thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am framing against you evil, And devising against you a device, Turn back, I pray you, each from his evil way And amen your ways and your doings.

«Ora parla agli uomini di Giuda e agli abitanti di Gerusalemme e di’: “Così parla il Signore: ‘Ecco, io preparo contro di voi del male e formo contro di voi un disegno. Si converta ora ciascuno di voi dalla sua malvagità, cambiate le vostre vie e le vostre azioni!’”.

12 A nd they have said, It is incurable, For after our own devices we do go, And each the stubbornness of his evil heart we do.

Ma costoro dicono: “È inutile; noi vogliamo camminare seguendo i nostri pensieri, vogliamo agire ciascuno seguendo la caparbietà del nostro cuore malvagio”.

13 T herefore, thus said Jehovah: Ask, I pray you, among the nations, Who hath heard like these? A very horrible thing hath the virgin of Israel done.

Perciò così parla il Signore: “Chiedete dunque fra le nazioni chi ha udito tali cose! La vergine d’Israele ha fatto una cosa orribile, enorme.

14 D oth snow of Lebanon Cease from the rock of the field? Failed are the cold strange waters that flow?

La neve del Libano scompare mai dalle rocce che dominano la campagna? O le acque che vengono di lontano, fresche, correnti, si asciugano mai?

15 B ut My people have forgotten Me, to a vain thing they make perfume, And they cause them to stumble in their ways -- paths of old, To walk in paths -- a way not raised up,

Eppure il mio popolo mi ha dimenticato, offre profumi agli idoli vani. Questi lo hanno fatto inciampare nelle sue vie, che erano i sentieri antichi, perché seguisse sentieri laterali, una via non appianata,

16 T o make their land become a desolation, A hissing age-during, Every passer by it is astonished, And bemoaneth with his head.

e per far così del loro paese una desolazione, un oggetto di continuo scherno; talché tutti quelli che vi passano rimangono stupiti e scuotono il capo.

17 A s an east wind I scatter them before an enemy, The neck, and not the face, I shew them, In the day of their calamity.'

Io li disperderò davanti al nemico, come fa il vento orientale; io volterò loro le spalle e non la faccia nel giorno della loro calamità”». Congiura contro Geremia

18 A nd they say, Come, And we devise against Jeremiah devices, For law doth not perish from the priest, Nor counsel from the wise, Nor the word from the prophet, Come, and we smite him with the tongue, And we do not attend to any of his words.

Essi hanno detto: «Venite, tramiamo insidie contro Geremia; poiché la legge non verrà meno per mancanza di sacerdoti, né il consiglio per mancanza di saggi, né la parola per mancanza di profeti. Venite, attacchiamolo con la lingua e non diamo retta a nessuna delle sue parole».

19 G ive attention, O Jehovah, unto me, And hearken to the voice of those contending with me.

Signore, volgi a me la tua attenzione e odi la voce dei miei avversari.

20 I s evil recompensed instead of good, That they have dug a pit for my soul? Remember my standing before Thee to speak good of them, To turn back Thy wrath from them.

Il male sarà forse reso in cambio del bene? Essi infatti hanno scavato una fossa per me. Ricòrdati come io mi sono presentato davanti a te per parlare in loro favore e per distogliere la tua ira da loro.

21 T herefore, give up their sons to famine, And cause them to run on the sides of the sword, And their wives are bereaved and widows, And their men are slain by death, Their young men smitten by sword in battle,

Perciò abbandona i loro figli alla fame e dalli in balìa della spada; le loro mogli siano private di figli e rimangano vedove, i loro mariti siano feriti a morte; i loro giovani siano colpiti dalla spada in battaglia.

22 A cry is heard from their houses, For Thou bringest against them suddenly a troop, For they dug a pit to capture me, And snares they have hidden for my feet.

Un grido si oda uscire dalle loro case, quando tu farai piombare su di loro all’improvviso le bande nemiche; poiché hanno scavato una fossa per catturarmi e hanno teso dei lacci ai miei piedi.

23 A nd Thou, O Jehovah, Thou hast known, All their counsel against me for death, Thou dost not cover over their iniquity, Nor their sin from before Thee blottest out, And they are made to stumble before Thee, In the time of Thine anger work against them!

Tu, Signore, conosci tutti i loro disegni contro di me per farmi morire; non perdonare la loro iniquità, non cancellare il loro peccato davanti ai tuoi occhi! Siano essi abbattuti davanti a te! Agisci contro di loro nel giorno della tua ira!
