1 A nd Samuel saith unto Saul, `Me did Jehovah send to anoint thee for king over His people, over Israel; and now, hearken to the voice of the words of Jehovah:

Samuele disse a Saul: «Il Signore mandò me per ungerti re del suo popolo, d’Israele; ascolta dunque quel che ti dice il Signore.

2 ` Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, I have looked after that which Amalek did to Israel, that which he laid for him in the way in his going up out of Egypt.

Così parla il Signore degli eserciti: “Io ricordo ciò che Amalec fece a Israele quando gli si oppose nel viaggio mentre saliva dall’Egitto.

3 N ow, go, and thou hast smitten Amalek, and devoted all that it hath, and thou hast no pity on it, and hast put to death from man unto woman, from infant unto suckling, from ox unto sheep, from camel unto ass.'

Ora va’, sconfiggi Amalec, vota allo sterminio tutto ciò che gli appartiene; non lo risparmiare, ma uccidi uomini e donne, bambini e lattanti, buoi e pecore, cammelli e asini”».

4 A nd Saul summoneth the people, and inspecteth them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

Saul dunque convocò il popolo e ne fece la rassegna a Telaim: erano duecentomila fanti e diecimila uomini di Giuda.

5 A nd Saul cometh in unto a city of Amalek, and layeth wait in a valley;

Saul giunse alla città di Amalec, pose un’imboscata nella valle

6 a nd Saul saith unto the Kenite, `Go, turn aside, go down from the midst of Amalek, lest I consume thee with it, and thou didst kindness with all the sons of Israel, in their going up out of Egypt;' and the Kenite turneth aside from the midst of Amalek.

e disse ai Chenei: «Andatevene, ritiratevi, allontanatevi dagli Amalechiti, perché io non vi distrugga insieme a loro; infatti voi vi comportaste amichevolmente verso tutti i figli d’Israele quando salirono dall’Egitto». Così i Chenei si ritirarono dagli Amalechiti.

7 A nd Saul smiteth Amalek from Havilah -- thy going in to Shur, which on the front of Egypt,

Saul sconfisse gli Amalechiti da Avila fino a Sur, che sta di fronte all’Egitto;

8 a nd he catcheth Agag king of Amalek alive, and all the people he hath devoted by the mouth of the sword;

prese vivo Agag, re degli Amalechiti, e votò allo sterminio tutto il popolo, passandolo a fil di spada.

9 a nd Saul hath pity -- also the people -- on Agag, and on the best of the flock, and of the herd, and of the seconds, and on the lambs, and on all that good, and have not been willing to devote them; and all the work, despised and wasted -- it they devoted.

Ma Saul e il popolo risparmiarono Agag e il meglio delle pecore, dei buoi e degli animali della seconda figliatura, gli agnelli e tutto quel che c’era di buono; non vollero votarli allo sterminio, ma votarono allo sterminio ogni cosa senza valore e inutile.

10 A nd the word of Jehovah is unto Samuel, saying,

Allora la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Samuele, dicendo:

11 ` I have repented that I caused Saul to reign for king, for he hath turned back from after Me, and My words he hath not performed;' and it is displeasing to Samuel, and he crieth unto Jehovah all the night.

«Io mi pento di avere stabilito Saul re, perché si è allontanato da me e non ha eseguito i miei ordini». Samuele ne fu irritato e gridò al Signore tutta la notte.

12 A nd Samuel riseth early to meet Saul in the morning, and it is declared to Samuel, saying, `Saul hath come in to Carmel, and lo, he is setting up to himself a monument, and goeth round, and passeth over, and goeth down to Gilgal.'

Poi si alzò la mattina di buon’ora e andò a incontrare Saul; ma vennero a dire a Samuele: «Saul è andato a Carmel, e là si è fatto un monumento; poi se n’è ritornato e, passando da un’altra parte, è sceso a Ghilgal».

13 A nd Samuel cometh in unto Saul, and Saul saith to him, `Blessed thou of Jehovah; I have performed the word of Jehovah.'

Samuele andò da Saul; e Saul gli disse: «Il Signore ti benedica! Ho eseguito l’ordine del Signore ».

14 A nd Samuel saith, `And what the noise of this flock in mine ears -- and the noise of the herd which I am hearing?'

Samuele disse: «Che cos’è dunque questo belar di pecore che mi giunge agli orecchi e questo muggire di buoi che sento?»

15 A nd Saul saith, `From Amalek they have brought them, because the people had pity on the best of the flock, and of the herd, in order to sacrifice to Jehovah thy God, and the remnant we have devoted.'

Saul rispose: «Sono bestie condotte dal paese degli Amalechiti; perché il popolo ha risparmiato il meglio delle pecore e dei buoi per farne dei sacrifici al Signore, al tuo Dio; il resto, però, l’abbiamo votato allo sterminio».

16 A nd Samuel saith unto Saul, `Desist, and I declare to thee that which Jehovah hath spoken unto me to-night;' and he saith to him, `Speak.'

Allora Samuele disse a Saul: «Basta! Io ti annuncerò quel che il Signore mi ha detto stanotte». Saul gli disse: «Parla».

17 A nd Samuel saith, `Art not thou, if thou little in thine own eyes, head of the tribes of Israel? and Jehovah doth anoint thee for king over Israel,

Samuele disse: «Non è forse vero che quando ti consideravi piccolo sei diventato capo delle tribù d’Israele, e il Signore ti ha unto re d’Israele?

18 a nd Jehovah sendeth thee in the way, and saith, Go, and thou hast devoted the sinners, the Amalekite, and fought against them till they are consumed;

Il Signore ti aveva affidato una missione, dicendo: “Va’, vota allo sterminio quei peccatori degli Amalechiti, e fa’ loro guerra finché siano sterminati”.

19 a nd why hast thou not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah -- and dost fly unto the spoil, and dost do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah?'

Perché dunque non hai ubbidito alla voce del Signore ? Perché ti sei gettato sul bottino e hai fatto ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore ?»

20 A nd Saul saith unto Samuel, `Because -- I have hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, and I go in the way which Jehovah hath sent me, and bring in Agag king of Amalek, and Amalek I have devoted;

Saul disse a Samuele: «Ma io ho ubbidito alla voce del Signore, ho compiuto la missione che il Signore mi aveva affidata, ho condotto qui Agag, re di Amalec, e ho votato allo sterminio gli Amalechiti;

21 a nd the people taketh of the spoil of the flock and herd, the first part of the devoted thing, for sacrifice to Jehovah thy God in Gilgal.'

ma il popolo ha preso, fra il bottino, delle pecore e dei buoi come primizie di ciò che doveva essere sterminato, per farne dei sacrifici al Signore, al tuo Dio, a Ghilgal».

22 A nd Samuel saith, `Hath Jehovah had delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices as hearkening to the voice of Jehovah? lo, hearkening than sacrifice is better; to give attention than fat of rams;

Samuele disse: «Il Signore gradisce forse gli olocausti e i sacrifici quanto l’ubbidire alla sua voce? No, l’ubbidire è meglio del sacrificio, dare ascolto vale più che il grasso dei montoni;

23 f or a sin of divination rebellion, and iniquity and teraphim stubbornness; because thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, He also doth reject thee from king.'

infatti la ribellione è come il peccato della divinazione, e l’ostinatezza è come l’adorazione degli idoli e degli dèi domestici. Poiché tu hai rigettato la parola del Signore, anch’egli ti rigetta come re».

24 A nd Saul saith unto Samuel, `I have sinned, for I passed over the command of Jehovah, and thy words; because I have feared the people, I also hearken to their voice;

Allora Saul disse a Samuele: «Ho peccato, perché ho trasgredito il comandamento del Signore e le tue parole, perché ho temuto il popolo e ho dato ascolto alla sua voce.

25 a nd now, bear, I pray thee, with my sin, and turn back with me, and I bow myself to Jehovah.'

Ti prego dunque, perdona il mio peccato, ritorna con me e mi prostrerò davanti al Signore ».

26 A nd Samuel saith unto Saul, `I do not turn back with thee; for thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, and Jehovah doth reject thee from being king over Israel.'

Ma Samuele disse a Saul: «Non ritornerò con te, poiché hai rigettato la parola del Signore e il Signore ha rigettato te perché tu non regni più sopra Israele».

27 A nd Samuel turneth round to go, and he layeth hold on the skirt of his upper robe -- and it is rent!

Come Samuele si voltava per andarsene, Saul lo prese per il lembo del mantello, che si strappò.

28 A nd Samuel saith unto him, `Jehovah hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee to-day, and given it to thy neighbour who is better than thou;

Allora Samuele gli disse: «Il Signore strappa oggi di dosso a te il regno d’Israele e lo dà a un altro, migliore di te.

29 a nd also, the Pre-eminence of Israel doth not lie nor repent, for He not a man to be penitent.'

Colui che è la gloria d’Israele non mentirà e non si pentirà; egli infatti non è un uomo perché debba pentirsi».

30 A nd he saith, `I have sinned; now, honour me, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn back with me; and I have bowed myself to Jehovah thy God.'

Allora Saul disse: «Ho peccato; ma tu adesso onorami, ti prego, in presenza degli anziani del mio popolo e in presenza d’Israele; ritorna con me e mi prostrerò davanti al Signore, al tuo Dio».

31 A nd Samuel turneth back after Saul, and Saul boweth himself to Jehovah;

Samuele dunque ritornò, seguendo Saul, e Saul si prostrò davanti al Signore.

32 a nd Samuel saith, `Bring ye nigh unto me Agag king of Amalek,' and Agag cometh unto him daintily, and Agag saith, `Surely the bitterness of death hath turned aside.'

Poi Samuele disse: «Conducetemi qui Agag, re degli Amalechiti». Agag andò da lui fiducioso, pensando: «Certo, l’amarezza della morte è passata».

33 A nd Samuel saith, `As thy sword bereaved women -- so is thy mother bereaved above women;' and Samuel heweth Agag in pieces before Jehovah in Gilgal.

Samuele gli disse: «Come la tua spada ha privato le donne di figli, così tua madre sarà privata di figli fra le donne». E Samuele fece squartare Agag in presenza del Signore a Ghilgal.

34 A nd Samuel goeth to Ramath, and Saul hath gone unto his house -- to Gibeah of Saul.

Poi Samuele andò a Rama e Saul salì a casa sua, a Ghibea di Saul.

35 A nd Samuel hath not added to see Saul till the day of his death, for Samuel mourned for Saul, and Jehovah repented that He had caused Saul to reign over Israel.

Samuele, finché visse, non andò più a vedere Saul, perché Samuele faceva cordoglio per Saul; e il Signore si pentiva di aver fatto Saul re d’Israele.
