1 A nd Samuel saith unto Saul, `Me did Jehovah send to anoint thee for king over His people, over Israel; and now, hearken to the voice of the words of Jehovah:

Un día Samuel dijo a Saúl: —Jehová me envió a que te ungiera rey sobre su pueblo Israel; ahora, pues, escucha las palabras de Jehová.

2 ` Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, I have looked after that which Amalek did to Israel, that which he laid for him in the way in his going up out of Egypt.

Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos: “Yo castigaré lo que Amalec hizo a Israel, cortándole el camino cuando subía de Egipto.

3 N ow, go, and thou hast smitten Amalek, and devoted all that it hath, and thou hast no pity on it, and hast put to death from man unto woman, from infant unto suckling, from ox unto sheep, from camel unto ass.'

Ve, pues, hiere a Amalec, destruye todo lo que tiene y no te apiades de él; mata hombres, mujeres y niños, aun los de pecho, y vacas, ovejas, camellos y asnos.”

4 A nd Saul summoneth the people, and inspecteth them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

Saúl convocó, pues, al pueblo y les pasó revista en Telaim: doscientos mil de a pie y diez mil hombres de Judá.

5 A nd Saul cometh in unto a city of Amalek, and layeth wait in a valley;

Vino Saúl a la ciudad de Amalec y se emboscó en el valle.

6 a nd Saul saith unto the Kenite, `Go, turn aside, go down from the midst of Amalek, lest I consume thee with it, and thou didst kindness with all the sons of Israel, in their going up out of Egypt;' and the Kenite turneth aside from the midst of Amalek.

Entonces dijo Saúl a los ceneos: «Idos, apartaos y salid de entre los de Amalec, para que no os destruya juntamente con ellos; porque vosotros mostrasteis misericordia a todos los hijos de Israel cuando subían de Egipto.» Se apartaron los ceneos de entre los hijos de Amalec.

7 A nd Saul smiteth Amalek from Havilah -- thy going in to Shur, which on the front of Egypt,

Y Saúl derrotó a los amalecitas desde Havila hasta llegar a Shur, que está al oriente de Egipto.

8 a nd he catcheth Agag king of Amalek alive, and all the people he hath devoted by the mouth of the sword;

Capturó vivo a Agag, rey de Amalec, y a todo el pueblo lo mató a filo de espada.

9 a nd Saul hath pity -- also the people -- on Agag, and on the best of the flock, and of the herd, and of the seconds, and on the lambs, and on all that good, and have not been willing to devote them; and all the work, despised and wasted -- it they devoted.

Pero Saúl y el pueblo perdonaron a Agag, y a lo mejor de las ovejas y del ganado mayor, de los animales engordados, de los carneros y de todo lo bueno, y no lo quisieron destruir; pero destruyeron todo lo que era vil y despreciable.

10 A nd the word of Jehovah is unto Samuel, saying,

Vino luego esta palabra de Jehová a Samuel:

11 ` I have repented that I caused Saul to reign for king, for he hath turned back from after Me, and My words he hath not performed;' and it is displeasing to Samuel, and he crieth unto Jehovah all the night.

«Me pesa haber hecho rey a Saúl, porque se ha apartado de mí y no ha cumplido mis palabras.» Se apesadumbró Samuel y clamó a Jehová toda aquella noche.

12 A nd Samuel riseth early to meet Saul in the morning, and it is declared to Samuel, saying, `Saul hath come in to Carmel, and lo, he is setting up to himself a monument, and goeth round, and passeth over, and goeth down to Gilgal.'

Madrugó Samuel para ir al encuentro de Saúl por la mañana; y avisaron a Samuel: «Saúl llega a Carmel y se ha erigido un monumento; después se dio vuelta y siguió adelante para bajar a Gilgal.»

13 A nd Samuel cometh in unto Saul, and Saul saith to him, `Blessed thou of Jehovah; I have performed the word of Jehovah.'

Vino, pues, Samuel a Saúl, y Saúl le dijo: —Bendito seas tú de Jehová; yo he cumplido la palabra de Jehová.

14 A nd Samuel saith, `And what the noise of this flock in mine ears -- and the noise of the herd which I am hearing?'

—¿Pues qué balido de ovejas y bramido de vacas es éste que yo oigo con mis oídos? —preguntó entonces Samuel.

15 A nd Saul saith, `From Amalek they have brought them, because the people had pity on the best of the flock, and of the herd, in order to sacrifice to Jehovah thy God, and the remnant we have devoted.'

—De Amalec las han traído; porque el pueblo perdonó lo mejor de las ovejas y de las vacas, para sacrificarlas a Jehová tu Dios, pero lo demás lo destruimos —respondió Saúl.

16 A nd Samuel saith unto Saul, `Desist, and I declare to thee that which Jehovah hath spoken unto me to-night;' and he saith to him, `Speak.'

Entonces dijo Samuel a Saúl: —Déjame que te anuncie lo que Jehová me ha dicho esta noche. —Habla —le respondió él.

17 A nd Samuel saith, `Art not thou, if thou little in thine own eyes, head of the tribes of Israel? and Jehovah doth anoint thee for king over Israel,

Y dijo Samuel: —Aunque a tus propios ojos eras pequeño, ¿no has sido hecho jefe de las tribus de Israel, y Jehová te ha ungido rey sobre Israel?

18 a nd Jehovah sendeth thee in the way, and saith, Go, and thou hast devoted the sinners, the Amalekite, and fought against them till they are consumed;

Jehová te envió en misión y te ha dicho: “Ve, destruye a los pecadores de Amalec y hazles guerra hasta que los acabes.”

19 a nd why hast thou not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah -- and dost fly unto the spoil, and dost do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah?'

¿Por qué, pues, no has oído la voz de Jehová? ¿Por qué te has lanzado sobre el botín y has hecho lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová?

20 A nd Saul saith unto Samuel, `Because -- I have hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, and I go in the way which Jehovah hath sent me, and bring in Agag king of Amalek, and Amalek I have devoted;

Saúl respondió a Samuel: —Al contrario, ¡he obedecido la voz de Jehová! Fui a la misión que Jehová me envió, traje a Agag, rey de Amalec, y he destruido a los amalecitas.

21 a nd the people taketh of the spoil of the flock and herd, the first part of the devoted thing, for sacrifice to Jehovah thy God in Gilgal.'

Pero el pueblo tomó del botín ovejas y vacas, lo mejor del anatema, para ofrecer sacrificios a Jehová, tu Dios, en Gilgal.

22 A nd Samuel saith, `Hath Jehovah had delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices as hearkening to the voice of Jehovah? lo, hearkening than sacrifice is better; to give attention than fat of rams;

Entonces Samuel dijo: —¿Acaso se complace Jehová tanto en los holocaustos y sacrificios como en la obediencia a las palabras de Jehová? Mejor es obedecer que sacrificar; prestar atención mejor es que la grasa de los carneros.

23 f or a sin of divination rebellion, and iniquity and teraphim stubbornness; because thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, He also doth reject thee from king.'

Como pecado de adivinación es la rebelión, como ídolos e idolatría la obstinación. Por cuanto rechazaste la palabra de Jehová, también él te ha rechazado para que no seas rey.

24 A nd Saul saith unto Samuel, `I have sinned, for I passed over the command of Jehovah, and thy words; because I have feared the people, I also hearken to their voice;

Saúl dijo a Samuel: —He pecado, pues he desobedecido el mandamiento de Jehová y tus palabras, porque temí al pueblo y consentí a la voz de ellos. Perdona, pues, ahora mi pecado.

25 a nd now, bear, I pray thee, with my sin, and turn back with me, and I bow myself to Jehovah.'

Vuelve conmigo para que adore a Jehová.

26 A nd Samuel saith unto Saul, `I do not turn back with thee; for thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, and Jehovah doth reject thee from being king over Israel.'

—No volveré contigo, porque rechazaste la palabra de Jehová y Jehová te ha rechazado para que no seas rey sobre Israel —respondió Samuel a Saúl.

27 A nd Samuel turneth round to go, and he layeth hold on the skirt of his upper robe -- and it is rent!

Samuel se volvió para irse, pero él se asió de la punta de su manto, y éste se desgarró.

28 A nd Samuel saith unto him, `Jehovah hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee to-day, and given it to thy neighbour who is better than thou;

Entonces Samuel le dijo: —Jehová ha desgarrado hoy de ti el reino de Israel y lo ha dado a un prójimo tuyo mejor que tú.

29 a nd also, the Pre-eminence of Israel doth not lie nor repent, for He not a man to be penitent.'

Además, el que es la Gloria de Israel no mentirá ni se arrepentirá, porque no es hombre para que se arrepienta.

30 A nd he saith, `I have sinned; now, honour me, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn back with me; and I have bowed myself to Jehovah thy God.'

—Yo he pecado; pero te ruego que me honres delante de los ancianos de mi pueblo y delante de Israel, y que vuelvas conmigo para que adore a Jehová, tu Dios —dijo Saúl.

31 A nd Samuel turneth back after Saul, and Saul boweth himself to Jehovah;

Volvió Samuel en compañía de Saúl, y adoró Saúl a Jehová.

32 a nd Samuel saith, `Bring ye nigh unto me Agag king of Amalek,' and Agag cometh unto him daintily, and Agag saith, `Surely the bitterness of death hath turned aside.'

Después dijo Samuel: «Traedme a Agag, rey de Amalec.» Agag vino hacia él alegremente. Y decía: «Ciertamente ya pasó la amargura de la muerte.»

33 A nd Samuel saith, `As thy sword bereaved women -- so is thy mother bereaved above women;' and Samuel heweth Agag in pieces before Jehovah in Gilgal.

Samuel dijo: «Como tu espada dejó a las mujeres sin hijos, así tu madre quedará privada de su hijo entre las mujeres.» Entonces Samuel cortó en pedazos a Agag delante de Jehová en Gilgal.

34 A nd Samuel goeth to Ramath, and Saul hath gone unto his house -- to Gibeah of Saul.

Se fue luego Samuel a Ramá, y Saúl subió a su casa en Gabaa de Saúl.

35 A nd Samuel hath not added to see Saul till the day of his death, for Samuel mourned for Saul, and Jehovah repented that He had caused Saul to reign over Israel.

Nunca más vio Samuel a Saúl en toda su vida. Y lloraba Samuel por Saúl, porque Jehová se había arrepentido de haberlo hecho rey de Israel.
