1 A nd Israel dwelleth in Shittim, and the people begin to go a-whoring unto daughters of Moab,

Israel estaba en Sitim cuando el pueblo empezó a prostituirse con las hijas de Moab,

2 a nd they call for the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people eat, and bow themselves to their gods,

las cuales invitaban al pueblo a los sacrificios de sus dioses; el pueblo comió y se inclinó a sus dioses.

3 a nd Israel is joined to Baal-Peor, and the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel.

Así acudió el pueblo a Baal-peor, y el furor de Jehová se encendió contra Israel.

4 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them before Jehovah -- over-against the sun; and the fierceness of the anger of Jehovah doth turn back from Israel.'

Jehová dijo a Moisés: «Toma a todos los príncipes del pueblo y ahórcalos ante Jehová a plena luz del día, para que el ardor de la ira de Jehová se aparte de Israel.»

5 A nd Moses saith unto the judges of Israel, `Slay ye each his men who are joined to Baal-Peor.'

Moisés dijo a los jueces de Israel: «Matad cada uno a aquellos de los vuestros que se han juntado con Baal-peor.»

6 A nd lo, a man of the sons of Israel hath come, and bringeth in unto his brethren the Midianitess, before the eyes of Moses, and before the eyes of all the company of the sons of Israel, who are weeping at the opening of the tent of meeting;

Uno de los hijos de Israel llegó trayendo una madianita adonde estaban sus hermanos, ante los ojos de Moisés y de toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, mientras ellos lloraban a la puerta del Tabernáculo de reunión.

7 a nd Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, the priest, seeth, and riseth from the midst of the company, and taketh a javelin in his hand,

Al ver esto, Finees hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, se levantó de en medio de la congregación, tomó una lanza en su mano,

8 a nd goeth in after the man of Israel unto the hollow place, and pierceth them both, the man of Israel and the woman -- unto her belly, and the plague is restrained from the sons of Israel;

entró tras aquel hombre de Israel a la tienda y los traspasó a ambos por el vientre, al varón de Israel y a la mujer. Y cesó la mortandad de los hijos de Israel.

9 a nd the dead by the plague are four and twenty thousand.

Los que murieron a causa de aquella plaga fueron veinticuatro mil.

10 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

Entonces Jehová habló a Moisés y le dijo:

11 ` Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, hath turned back My fury from the sons of Israel, by his being zealous with My zeal in their midst, and I have not consumed the sons of Israel in My zeal.

«Finees hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, ha hecho apartar mi furor de los hijos de Israel, porque ha mostrado entre ellos un celo como el mío; por eso yo no he consumido en mi celo a los hijos de Israel.

12 ` Therefore say, Lo, I am giving to him My covenant of peace,

Diles, por tanto: “Yo establezco mi pacto de paz con él.

13 a nd it hath been to him and to his seed after him a covenant of a priesthood age-during, because that he hath been zealous for his God, and doth make atonement for the sons of Israel.'

Será para él, y para su descendencia después de él, el pacto del sacerdocio perpetuo, por cuanto tuvo celo por su Dios e hizo expiación por los hijos de Israel.”»

14 A nd the name of the man of Israel who is smitten, who hath been smitten with the Midianitess, Zimri son of Salu, prince of the house of a father of the Simeonite;

El nombre del hombre que fue muerto junto con la madianita era Zimri hijo de Salu, jefe de una familia de la tribu de Simeón.

15 a nd the name of the woman who is smitten, the Midianitess, Cozbi daughter of Zur, head of a people -- of the house of a father in Midian he.

Y el nombre de la mujer madianita muerta era Cozbi, hija de Zur, príncipe de pueblos, padre de familia en Madián.

16 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

Jehová habló a Moisés y le dijo:

17 ` Distress the Midianites, and ye have smitten them,

«Atacad a los madianitas y heridlos,

18 f or they are adversaries to you with their frauds, which they have acted fraudulently to you, concerning the matter of Peor, and concerning the matter of Cozbi, daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who is smitten in the day of the plague for the matter of Peor.'

por cuanto ellos os afligieron a vosotros engañándoos con sus ardides en lo tocante a Baal-peor, y en lo tocante a Cozbi, hija del príncipe de Madián, hermana de ellos, la cual fue muerta el día de la mortandad que vino por lo de Baal-peor.»
