1 A nd Israel dwelleth in Shittim, and the people begin to go a-whoring unto daughters of Moab,

Israel locuia în Sitim; şi poporul a început să se dea la curvie cu fetele lui Moab.

2 a nd they call for the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people eat, and bow themselves to their gods,

Ele au poftit poporul la jertfele dumnezeilor lor; şi poporul a mîncat, şi s'a închinat pînă la pămînt înaintea dumnezeilor lor.

3 a nd Israel is joined to Baal-Peor, and the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel.

Israel s'a alipit de Baal-Peor, şi Domnul S'a aprins de mînie împotriva lui Israel.

4 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them before Jehovah -- over-against the sun; and the fierceness of the anger of Jehovah doth turn back from Israel.'

Domnul a zis lui Moise:,, Strînge pe toate căpeteniile poporului, şi spînzură pe cei vinovaţi înaintea Domnului în faţa soarelui, pentru ca să se întoarcă dela Israel mînia aprinsă a Domnului.``

5 A nd Moses saith unto the judges of Israel, `Slay ye each his men who are joined to Baal-Peor.'

Moise a zis judecătorilor lui Israel:,, Fiecare din voi să ucidă pe aceia dintre ai lui cari s'au lipit de Baal-Peor.``

6 A nd lo, a man of the sons of Israel hath come, and bringeth in unto his brethren the Midianitess, before the eyes of Moses, and before the eyes of all the company of the sons of Israel, who are weeping at the opening of the tent of meeting;

Şi iată că un bărbat dintre copiii lui Israel a venit şi a adus la fraţii lui pe o Madianită, subt ochii lui Moise şi subt ochii întregii adunări a copiilor lui Israel, pe cînd plîngeau la uşa cortului întîlnirii.

7 a nd Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, the priest, seeth, and riseth from the midst of the company, and taketh a javelin in his hand,

La vederea acestui lucru, Fineas, fiul lui Eleazar, fiul preotului Aaron, s'a sculat din mijlocul adunării, şi a luat o suliţă în mînă.

8 a nd goeth in after the man of Israel unto the hollow place, and pierceth them both, the man of Israel and the woman -- unto her belly, and the plague is restrained from the sons of Israel;

S'a luat după omul acela din Israel pînă în cortul lui, i -a străpuns prin pîntece pe amîndoi: atît pe bărbatul acela din Israel, cît şi pe femeea aceea. Şi a încetat astfel urgia care izbucnise printre copiii lui Israel.

9 a nd the dead by the plague are four and twenty thousand.

Douăzeci şi patru de mii au murit loviţi de urgia aceea.

10 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

Domnul a vorbit lui Moise, şi a zis:

11 ` Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, hath turned back My fury from the sons of Israel, by his being zealous with My zeal in their midst, and I have not consumed the sons of Israel in My zeal.

Fineas, fiul lui Eleazar, fiul preotului Aaron, a abătut mînia Mea dela copiii lui Israel, prin rîvna pe care a avut -o pentru Mine în mijlocul lor; şi n'am nimicit, în mînia Mea, pe copiii lui Israel.

12 ` Therefore say, Lo, I am giving to him My covenant of peace,

De aceea să spui că închei cu el un legămînt de pace.

13 a nd it hath been to him and to his seed after him a covenant of a priesthood age-during, because that he hath been zealous for his God, and doth make atonement for the sons of Israel.'

Acesta va fi pentru el şi pentru sămînţa lui după el legămîntul unei preoţii vecinice, pentrucă a fost plin de rîvnă pentru Dumnezeul lui şi a făcut ispăşire pentru copiii lui Israel.``

14 A nd the name of the man of Israel who is smitten, who hath been smitten with the Midianitess, Zimri son of Salu, prince of the house of a father of the Simeonite;

Bărbatul acela din Israel, care a fost ucis împreună cu Madianita, se numea Zimri, fiul lui Salu; el era căpetenia unei case părinteşti a Simeoniţilor.

15 a nd the name of the woman who is smitten, the Midianitess, Cozbi daughter of Zur, head of a people -- of the house of a father in Midian he.

Femeia care a fost ucisă, se numea Cozbi, fata lui Ţur, căpetenia seminţiilor ieşite dintr'o casă părintească din Madian.

16 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

Domnul a vorbit lui Moise, şi a zis:

17 ` Distress the Midianites, and ye have smitten them,

Priviţi pe Madianiţi ca vrăjmaşi, şi ucideţi -i;

18 f or they are adversaries to you with their frauds, which they have acted fraudulently to you, concerning the matter of Peor, and concerning the matter of Cozbi, daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who is smitten in the day of the plague for the matter of Peor.'

căci şi ei vi s'au arătat vrăjmaşi, amăgindu-vă prin vicleşugurile lor, în fapta lui Peor, şi în fapta Cozbiei, fata unei căpetenii a lui Madian, sora lor, ucisă în ziua urgiei care a avut loc cu prilejul faptei lui Peor.``
