1 K eep thy feet when thou goest unto a house of God, and draw near to hear rather than to give of fools the sacrifice, for they do not know they do evil.

Păzeşte-ţi piciorul, cînd intri în Casa lui Dumnezeu, şi apropie-te mai bine să asculţi, decît să aduci jertfa nebunilor; căci ei nu ştiu că fac rău cu aceasta.

2 C ause not thy mouth to hasten, and let not thy heart hasten to bring out a word before God, for God is in the heavens, and thou on the earth, therefore let thy words be few.

Nu te grăbi să deschizi gura, şi să nu-ţi rostească inima cuvinte pripite înaintea lui Dumnezeu; căci Dumnezeu este în cer, şi tu pe pămînt, de aceea să nu spui vorbe multe.

3 F or the dream hath come by abundance of business, and the voice of a fool by abundance of words.

Căci, dacă visurile se nasc din mulţimea grijilor, prostia nebunului se cunoaşte din mulţimea cuvintelor.

4 W hen thou vowest a vow to God, delay not to complete it, for there is no pleasure in fools; that which thou vowest -- complete.

Dacă ai făcut o juruinţă lui Dumnezeu, nu zăbovi s'o împlineşti, căci Lui nu -I plac cei fără minte; de aceea împlineşte juruinţa, pe care ai făcut -o.

5 B etter that thou do not vow, than that thou dost vow and dost not complete.

Mai bine să nu faci nicio juruinţă, decît să faci o juruinţă şi să n'o împlineşti.

6 S uffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger, that `it an error,' why is God wroth because of thy voice, and hath destroyed the work of thy hands?

Nu lăsa gura să te bage în păcat, şi nu zice înaintea trimesului lui Dumnezeu:,, M'am pripit.`` Pentruce să Se mînie Dumnezeu din pricina cuvintelor tale, şi să nimicească lucrarea mînilor tale?

7 F or, in the abundance of dreams both vanities and words abound; but fear thou God.

Căci, dacă este deşertăciune în mulţimea visurilor, nu mai puţin este şi în mulţimea vorbelor; de aceea, teme-te de Dumnezeu.

8 I f oppression of the poor, and violent taking away of judgment and righteousness thou seest in a province, do not marvel at the matter, for a higher than the high is observing, and high ones over them.

Cînd vezi în ţară pe cel sărac năpăstuit şi jăfuit în numele dreptului şi dreptăţii, să nu te miri de lucrul acesta! Căci peste cel mare veghează altul mai mare, şi peste ei toţi Cel Prea Înalt.

9 A nd the abundance of a land is for all. A king for a field is served.

Dar un folos pentru ţară în toate privinţele, este un împărat preţuit în ţară.

10 W hoso is loving silver is not satisfied silver, nor he who is in love with stores increase. Even this vanity.

Cine iubeşte argintul, nu se satură niciodată de argint, şi cine iubeşte bogăţia multă, nu trage folos din ea. Şi aceasta este o deşertăciune!

11 I n the multiplying of good have its consumers been multiplied, and what benefit to its possessor except the sight of his eyes?

Cînd se înmulţesc bunătăţile, se înmulţesc şi ceice le papă: şi ce folos mai are din ele stăpînul lor decît că le vede cu ochii?

12 S weet the sleep of the labourer whether he eat little or much; and the sufficiency of the wealthy is not suffering him to sleep.

Dulce este somnul lucrătorului, fie că a mîncat mult, fie că a mîncat puţin; dar pe cel bogat nu -l lasă îmbuibarea să doarmă.

13 T here is a painful evil I have seen under the sun: wealth kept for its possessor, for his evil.

Este un mare rău, pe care l-am văzut supt soare: avuţii păstrate spre nefericirea stăpînului lor.

14 A nd that wealth hath been lost in an evil business, and he hath begotten a son and there is nothing in his hand!

Dacă se perd aceste bogăţii prin vreo întîmplare nenorocită, şi el are un fiu, fiului nu -i rămîne nimic în mîni.

15 A s he came out from the belly of his mother, naked he turneth back to go as he came, and he taketh not away anything of his labour, that doth go in his hand.

Cum a ieşit de gol din pîntecele mamei sale, din care a venit, aşa se întoarce, şi nu poate să ia nimic în mînă din toată osteneala lui.

16 A nd this also a painful evil, just as he came, so he goeth, and what advantage to him who laboureth for wind?

Şi acesta este un mare rău, anume că se duce cum venise; şi ce folos are el că s'a trudit în vînt?

17 A lso all his days in darkness he consumeth, and sadness, and wrath, and sickness abound.

Ba încă, toată viaţa lui a mai trebuit să mănînce cu necaz, şi a avut multă durere, grijă şi supărare.

18 L o, that which I have seen: good, because beautiful, to eat, and to drink, and to see good in all one's labour that he laboureth at under the sun, the number of the days of his life that God hath given to him, for it his portion.

Iată ce am văzut: este bine şi frumos ca omul să mănînce şi să bea, şi să trăiască bine în mijlocul muncii lui, cu care se trudeşte supt soare, în toate zilele vieţii lui, pe cari i le -a dat Dumnezeu; căci aceasta este partea lui.

19 E very man also to whom God hath given wealth and riches, and hath given him power to eat of it, and to accept his portion, and to rejoice in his labour, this is a gift of God.

Dar dacă a dat Dumnezeu cuiva avere şi bogăţii, şi i -a îngăduit să mănînce din ele, să-şi ia partea lui din ele, şi să se bucure în mijlocul muncii lui, acesta este un dar dela Dumnezeu.

20 F or he doth not much remember the days of his life, for God is answering through the joy of his heart.

Căci nu se mai gîndeşte mult la scurtimea zilelor vieţii lui, de vreme ce Dumnezeu îi umple inima de bucurie.
