1 A nd it cometh to pass, when all the kings who beyond the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the low-country, and in every haven of the great sea, over-against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, hear --

La auzul acestor lucruri, toţi împăraţii cari erau dincoace de Iordan, în munte şi în vale, şi pe toată coasta mării celei mari, pînă lîngă Liban, Hetiţii, Amoriţii, Cananiţii, Fereziţii, Heviţii şi Iebusiţii,

2 t hat they gather themselves together to fight with Joshua, and with Israel -- one mouth.

s'au unit împreună într'o înţelegere ca să lupte împotriva lui Iosua şi împotriva lui Israel.

3 A nd the inhabitants of Gibeon have heard that which Joshua hath done to Jericho and to Ai,

Locuitorii din Gabaon, de partea lor, cînd au auzit ce făcuse Iosua Ierihonului şi cetăţii Ai,

4 a nd they work, even they, with subtilty, and go, and feign to be ambassadors, and take old sacks for their asses, and wine-bottles, old, and rent, and bound up,

au întrebuinţat un vicleşug, şi au pornit la drum cu merinde pentru călătorie. Au luat nişte saci vechi pe măgarii lor, şi nişte burdufuri vechi pentru vin, rupte şi cîrpite,

5 a nd sandals, old and patched, on their feet, and old garments upon them, and all the bread of their provision is dry -- it was crumbs.

iar în picioare purtau încălţăminte veche şi cîrpită, şi erau îmbrăcaţi cu nişte haine vechi pe ei; iar toată pînea pe care o aveau pentru hrană era uscată şi mucegăise.

6 A nd they go unto Joshua, unto the camp at Gilgal, and say unto him, and unto the men of Israel, `From a land far off we have come, and now, make with us a covenant;'

S'au dus la Iosua în tabără la Ghilgal, şi i-au zis lui şi tuturor celor din Israel:,, Noi venim dintr'o ţară depărtată, acum deci faceţi legămînt cu noi``.

7 a nd the men of Israel say unto the Hivite, `It may be in our midst ye are dwelling, and how do we make with thee a covenant?'

Bărbaţii lui Israel au răspuns Heviţilor acestora:,, Poate că voi locuiţi în mijlocul nostru, cum să facem noi legămînt cu voi?``

8 a nd they say unto Joshua, `Thy servants we.' And Joshua saith unto them, `Who ye? and whence come ye?'

Ei au zis lui Iosua:,, Noi sîntem robii tăi.`` Şi Iosua le -a zis:,, Cine sînteţi voi, şi de unde veniţi?``

9 A nd they say unto him, `From a land very far off have thy servants come, for the name of Jehovah thy God, for we have heard His fame, and all that He hath done in Egypt,

Ei i-au răspuns:,, Robii tăi vin dintr'o ţară foarte depărtată, pentru faima Domnului, Dumnezeului tău; căci am auzit vorbindu-se de El, de tot ce a făcut în Egipt,

10 a nd all that He hath done to the two kings of the Amorite who beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who in Ashtaroth.

şi de ce a făcut celor doi împăraţi ai Amoriţilor dincolo de Iordan, lui Sihon, împăratul Hesbonului, şi lui Og, împăratul Basanului, care era la Aştarot.

11 ` And our elders, and all the inhabitants of our land speak unto us, saying, Take in your hand provision for the way, and go to meet them, and ye have said unto them, Your servants we, and now, make with us a covenant;

Şi bătrînii noştri şi toţi locuitorii din ţara noastră ne-au zis:, Luaţi cu voi merinde pentru călătorie, duceţi-vă înaintea lor, şi spuneţi-le:, Noi sîntem robii voştri; acum deci faceţi legămînt cu noi.

12 t his our bread -- hot we provided ourselves with it out of our houses, on the day of our coming out to go unto you, and now, lo, it is dry, and hath been crumbs;

Iată pînea noastră: era caldă cînd am luat -o ca merinde de acasă, în ziua cînd am plecat să venim la voi, şi acum s'a uscat şi s'a mucegăit.

13 a nd these the wine-bottles which we filled, new, and lo, they have rent; and these, our garments and our sandals, have become old, from the exceeding greatness of the way.'

Burdufurile acestea de vin, cînd le-am umplut, erau noi de tot, şi iată-le s'au rupt; hainele şi încălţămintea noastră s'au învechit de lungimea prea mare a drumului``.

14 A nd the men take of their provision, and the mouth of Jehovah have not asked;

Bărbaţii lui Israel au luat din merindele lor, şi n'au întrebat pe Domnul.

15 a nd Joshua maketh with them peace, and maketh with them a covenant, to keep them alive; and swear to them do the princes of the company.

Iosua a făcut pace cu ei, şi a încheiat un legămînt prin care trebuia să -i lase cu viaţă, şi căpeteniile adunării le-au jurat lucrul acesta.

16 A nd it cometh to pass, at the end of three days after that they have made with them a covenant, that they hear that they their neighbours -- that in their midst they are dwelling.

La trei zile după încheierea acestui legămînt, copiii lui Israel au aflat că erau vecini cu ei, şi că locuiau în mijlocul lor.

17 A nd the sons of Israel journey and come in unto their cities on the third day -- and their cities Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-Jearim --

Căci copiii lui Israel au plecat, şi a treia zi au ajuns la cetăţile lor; cetăţile lor erau Gabaon, Chefira, Beerot şi Chiriat-Iearim.

18 a nd the sons of Israel have not smitten them, for sworn to them have the princes of the company by Jehovah God of Israel, and all the company murmur against the princes.

Dar nu i-au bătut, pentrucă fruntaşii adunării le juraseră pe Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, că -i vor lăsa cu viaţă. Şi toată adunarea a cîrtit împotriva căpeteniilor.

19 A nd all the princes say unto all the company, `We -- we have sworn to them by Jehovah, God of Israel; and now, we are not able to come against them;

Toate căpeteniile au zis întregei adunări:,, Le-am jurat pe Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, şi acum nu putem să ne atingem de ei.

20 t his we do to them, and have kept them alive, and wrath is not upon us, because of the oath which we have sworn to them.'

Iată ce le vom face: îi vom lăsa cu viaţă, ca să n'aducem peste noi mînia Domnului, din pricina jurămîntului pe care li l-am făcut``.

21 A nd the princes say unto them, `They live, and are hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the company, as the princes spake to them.'

Să trăiască``, le-au zis căpeteniile. Dar au fost întrebuinţaţi la tăiat lemne şi la scos apă pentru toată adunarea, cum le spuseseră căpeteniile.

22 A nd Joshua calleth for them, and speaketh unto them, saying, `Why have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you, and ye in our midst dwelling?

Iosua i -a chemat, şi le -a vorbit astfel:,, Pentruce ne-aţi înşelat zicînd:, Sîntem foarte departe de voi`, cînd voi locuiţi în mijlocul nostru?

23 a nd now, cursed are ye, and none of you is cut off a servant, even hewers of wood and drawers of water, for the house of my God.'

Acum sînteţi blestemaţi, şi nu veţi înceta să fiţi în robie, să tăiaţi lemne şi să scoateţi apă pentru casa Dumnezeului meu``.

24 A nd they answer Joshua and say, `Because it was certainly declared to thy servants, that Jehovah thy God commanded Moses His servant to give to you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; and we fear greatly for ourselves because of you, and we do this thing;

Ei au răspuns lui Iosua, şi au zis:,, Robii tăi au auzit de poruncile date de Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, robului Său Moise, ca să vă dea în mînă toată ţara şi să nimicească dinaintea voastră pe toţi locuitorii ei; şi venirea voastră a băgat mare frică în noi cu privire la viaţa noastră: iată de ce am lucrat aşa.

25 a nd now, lo, we in thy hand, as good, and as right in thine eyes to do to us -- do.'

Şi acum iată-ne în mînile tale; fă cu noi ce vei crede că este bine şi drept să faci``.

26 A nd he doth to them so, and delivereth them from the hand of the sons of Israel, and they have not slain them;

Iosua le -a făcut aşa cum hotărîse; i -a izbăvit din mîna copiilor lui Israel, cari nu i-au omorît;

27 a nd Joshua maketh them on that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the company, and for the altar of Jehovah, unto this day, at the place which He doth choose.

dar din ziua aceea i -a pus să taie lemne şi să scoată apă pentru adunare, şi pentru altarul Domnului în locul pe care l-ar alege Domnul: ceeace fac pănă în ziua de azi.
