1 T hus hath the Lord Jehovah shewed me, and, lo, a basket of summer-fruit.

Domnul Dumnezeu mi -a trimes următoarea vedenie. Iată, era un coş cu poame coapte.

2 A nd He saith, `What art thou seeing, Amos?' and I say, `A basket of summer-fruit.' And Jehovah saith unto me: `The end hath come unto My people Israel, I do not add any more to pass over to it.

El a zis:,, Ce vezi, Amos?`` Eu am răspuns:,, Un coş cu poame coapte.`` Şi Domnul mi -a zis:,, A venit sfîrşitul poporului Meu Israel; nu -l mai pot ierta!

3 A nd howled have songstresses of a palace in that day, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, Many the carcases, into any place throw -- hush!

În ziua aceea, cîntecele Templului se vor preface în gemete, zice Domnul Dumnezeu, pretutindeni vor arunca în tăcere o mulţime de trupuri moarte.``

4 H ear this, ye who are swallowing up the needy, To cause to cease the poor of the land,

Ascultaţi lucrul acesta, voi cari mîncaţi pe cel lipsit, şi prăpădiţi pe cei nenorociţi din ţară!

5 S aying, When doth the new moon pass, And we sell ground corn? And the sabbath, and we open out pure corn? To make little the ephah, And to make great the shekel, And to use perversely balances of deceit.

Voi, cari ziceţi:,, Cînd va trece luna nouă, ca să vindem grîul, şi Sabatul ca să deschidem grînarele, să micşorăm efa şi să mărim siclul, şi să strîmbăm cumpăna ca să înşelăm?

6 T o purchase with money the poor, And the needy for a pair of sandals, Yea, the refuse of the pure corn we sell.

Apoi vom cumpăra pe cei nevoiaşi pe argint, şi pe sărac pe o păreche de încălţăminte, şi vom vinde codina în loc de grîu.`` -

7 S worn hath Jehovah by the excellency of Jacob: `I forget not for ever any of their works.

Domnul a jurat pe slava lui Iacov:,, Niciodată nu voi uita niciuna din faptele lor!

8 F or this doth not the land tremble, And mourned hath every dweller in it? And come up as a flood hath all of it. And it hath been cast out, and hath sunk, Like the flood of Egypt.

Nu se va cutremura ţara din pricina acestor mişelii, şi nu se vor jăli toţi locuitorii ei? Nu se va umfla toată ţara ca rîul, ridicîndu-se şi pogorîndu-se iarăş ca rîul Egiptului?

9 A nd it hath come to pass in that day, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, I have caused the sun to go in at noon, And caused darkness on the land in a day of light,

În ziua aceea, zice Domnul Dumnezeu, voi face să asfinţească soarele la amiază, şi voi întuneca pămîntul ziua nămeaza mare.

10 A nd have turned your festivals to mourning, And all your songs to lamentation, And caused sackcloth to come up on all loins, And on every head -- baldness, And made it as a mourning an only one, And its latter end as a day of bitterness.

Vă voi preface sărbătorile în jale, şi toate cîntările în bociri pentru morţi, voi acoperi toate coapsele cu saci şi voi face toate capetele pleşuve; voi arunca ţara într'o jale ca pentru un singur fiu, şi sfîrşitul ei va fi ca o zi amară.``

11 L o, days are coming, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, And I have sent a famine into the land, Not a famine of bread, nor a thirst of water But of hearing the words of Jehovah.

Iată, vin zile, zice Domnul Dumnezeu, cînd voi trimete foamete în ţară, nu foamete de pîne, nici sete de apă, ci foame şi sete după auzirea cuvintelor Domnului.

12 A nd they have wandered from sea unto sea, And from north even unto east, They go to and fro to seek the word of Jehovah, And they do not find.

Vor pribegi atunci dela o mare la alta, de la miază-noapte la răsărit, vor umbla istoviţi încoace şi încolo, ca să caute Cuvîntul Domnului, şi tot nu -l vor găsi.

13 I n that day faint do the fair virgins, And the young men, with thirst.

În ziua aceea se vor topi de sete fetele frumoase şi flăcăii.

14 T hose swearing by the guilt of Samaria, And have said, Live doth thy god, O Dan, And, Live doth the way of Beer-Sheba, And they have fallen -- and rise not again!'

Ei, cari jură acum pe păcatul Samariei, şi zic:, Pe Dumnezeul tău cel viu, Dane!` Şi:, Pe drumul Beer-Şebei!` Vor cădea, şi nu se vor mai scula.``
