1 A nd the Philistines gather their camps to battle, and are gathered to Shochoh, which to Judah, and encamp between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-Dammim;

2 a nd Saul and the men of Israel have been gathered, and encamp by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array to meet the Philistines.

Saul şi bărbaţii lui Israel s'au strîns şi ei; au tăbărît în Valea terebinţilor, şi s'au aşezat în linie de bătaie împotriva Filistenilor.

3 A nd the Philistines are standing on the mountain on this side, and the Israelites are standing on the mountain on that side, and the valley between them.

Filistenii se aşezaseră pe un munte deoparte, şi Israel pe un munte de cealaltă parte: doar valea îi despărţea.

4 A nd there goeth out a man of the duellists from the camps of the Philistines, Goliath his name, from Gath; his height six cubits and a span,

Atunci a ieşit un om din tabăra Filistenilor şi a înaintat între cele două oştiri. El se numea Goliat, era din Gat, şi avea o înălţime de şase coţi şi o palmă.

5 a nd a helmet of brass on his head, and a scaled coat of mail he clothed, and the weight of the coat of mail five thousand shekels of brass,

6 a nd a frontlet of brass on his feet, and a javelin of brass between his shoulders,

7 a nd the wood of his spear like a beam of weavers', and the flame of his spear six hundred shekels of iron, and the bearer of the buckler is going before him.

8 A nd he standeth and calleth unto the ranks of Israel, and saith to them, `Why are ye come out to set in array the battle? not I the Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose for you a man, and let him come down unto me;

Filisteanul s'a oprit; şi, vorbind oştilor lui Israel aşezate în şiruri de bătaie, le -a strigat:,, Pentruce ieşiţi să vă aşezaţi în şiruri de bătaie? Nu sînt eu Filistean, şi nu sînteţi voi slujitorii lui Saul? Alegeţi un om care să se pogoare împotriva mea!

9 i f he be able to fight with me, and have smitten me, then we have been to you for servants; and if I am able for him, and have smitten him, then ye have been to us for servants, and have served us.'

Dacă va putea să se bată cu mine şi să mă omoare, noi vom fi robii voştri; dar dacă -l voi birui şi -l voi omorî eu, voi ne veţi fi robi nouă şi ne veţi sluji.``

10 A nd the Philistine saith, `I have reproached the ranks of Israel this day; give to me a man, and we fight together.'

11 A nd Saul heareth -- and all Israel -- these words of the Philistine, and they are broken down and greatly afraid.

Saul şi tot Israelul au auzit aceste cuvinte ale Filisteanului, şi s'au înspăimîntat şi au fost cuprinşi de o mare frică.

12 A nd David son of this Ephrathite of Beth-Lehem-Judah, whose name Jesse, and he hath eight sons, and the man in the days of Saul hath become aged among men;

Şi David era fiul Efratitului aceluia din Betleemul lui Iuda, numit Isai, care avea opt... fii. Pe vremea lui Saul el era bătrîn înaintat în vîrstă.

13 a nd the three eldest sons of Jesse go, they have gone after Saul to battle; and the name of his three sons who have gone into battle Eliab the first-born, and his second Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

Cei trei fii mai mari ai lui Isai urmaseră pe Saul la război; întîiul născut din cei trei fii ai lui, cari porniseră la război, se numea Eliab, al doilea Abinadab, şi al treilea Şama.

14 A nd David is the youngest, and the three eldest have gone after Saul,

15 a nd David is going and returning from Saul, to feed the flock of his father at Beth-Lehem.

David a plecat dela Saul şi s'a întors la Betleem ca să pască oile tatălui său.

16 A nd the Philistine draweth nigh, morning and evening, and stationeth himself forty days.

Filisteanul înainta dimineaţa şi seara, şi s'a înfăţişat astfel timp de patruzeci de zile.

17 A nd Jesse saith to David his son, `Take, I pray thee, to thy brethren, an ephah of this roasted, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;

Isai a zis fiului său David:,, Ia pentru fraţii tăi efa aceasta de grîu prăjit şi aceste zece pîni, şi aleargă în tabără la fraţii tăi;

18 a nd these ten cuttings of the cheese thou dost take in to the head of the thousand, and thy brethren thou dost inspect for welfare, and their pledge dost receive.'

du şi aceste zece caşuri de brînză căpeteniei care este peste mia lor. Să vezi dacă fraţii tăi sînt bine, şi să-mi aduci veşti temeinice.

19 A nd Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

Ei sînt cu Saul şi cu toţi bărbaţii lui Israel în valea terebinţilor, în război cu Filistenii.``

20 A nd David riseth early in the morning, and leaveth the flock to a keeper, and lifteth up, and goeth, as Jesse commanded him, and he cometh in to the path, and to the force which is going out unto the rank, and they have shouted for battle;

David s'a sculat dis de dimineaţă. A lăsat oile în seama unui paznic, şi -a luat lucrurile, şi a plecat, cum îi poruncise Isai. Cînd a ajuns în tabără, oştirea pornise să se aşeze în şiruri de bătaie şi scotea strigăte de război.

21 a nd Israel and the Philistines set in array rank to meet rank.

Israel şi Filistenii s'au aşezat în şiruri de bătaie, oştire către oştire.

22 A nd David letteth down the goods from off him on the hand of a keeper of the goods, and runneth into the rank, and cometh and asketh of his brethren of welfare.

David a dat lucrurile pe cari le avea în mînile celui ce păzea calabalîcurile, şi a alergat la şirurile de bătaie. Cum a ajuns, a întrebat pe fraţii săi de sănătate.

23 A nd he is speaking with them, and lo, a man of the duellists is coming up, Goliath the Philistine his name, of Gath, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and he speaketh according to those words, and David heareth;

Pe cînd vorbea cu ei, iată că Filisteanul din Gat, numit Goliat, a înaintat între cele două oştiri, ieşind afară din şirurile Filistenilor. A rostit aceleaşi cuvinte ca mai înainte, şi David le -a auzit.

24 a nd all the men of Israel when they see the man flee from his presence, and are greatly afraid.

La vederea acestui om toţi cei din Israel au fugit dinaintea lui, şi i -a apucat o mare frică.

25 A nd the men of Israel say, `Have ye seen this man who is coming up? for, to reproach Israel he is coming up, and it hath been -- the man who smiteth him, the king doth enrich him with great riches, and his daughter he doth give to him, and his father's house doth make free in Israel.'

Fiecarea zicea:,, Aţi văzut pe omul acesta înaintînd? A înaintat ca să arunce ocara asupra lui Israel! Dacă -l va omorî cineva, împăratul îl va umplea de bogăţii, îi va da de nevastă pe fiică-sa, şi va scuti de dări casa tatălui său în Israel.``

26 A nd David speaketh unto the men who are standing by him, saying, `What is done to the man who smiteth this Philistine, and hath turned aside reproach from Israel? for who this uncircumcised Philistine that he hath reproached the ranks of the living God?'

David a zis oamenilor de lîngă el:,, Ce se va face aceluia care va omorî pe Filisteanul acesta, şi va lua ocara deasupra lui Isral? Cine este Filisteanul acesta, acest netăiat împrejur, ca să ocărască oştirea Dumnezeului celui viu?``

27 A nd the people speak to him according to this word, saying, `Thus it is done to the man who smiteth him.'

Poporul, spunînd din nou aceleaşi lucruri, i -a zis:,, Aşa şi aşa se va face aceluia care -l va omorî.``

28 A nd Eliab, his eldest brother, heareth when he speaketh unto the men, and the anger of Eliab burneth against David, and he saith, `Why this -- thou hast come down! and to whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I have known thy pride, and the evil of thy heart -- for, to see the battle thou hast come down.'

Eliab, fratele lui cel mai mare, care -l auzise vorbind cu oamenii aceştia, s'a aprins de mînie împotriva lui David. Şi a zis:,, Pentru ce te-ai pogorît tu, şi cui ai lăsat acele puţine oi în pustie? Îţi cunosc eu mîndria şi răutatea inimii. Te-ai pogorît ca să vezi lupta.``

29 A nd David saith, `What have I done now? is it not a word?'

David a răspuns:,, Ce-am făcut oare? Nu pot să vorbesc astfel?``

30 A nd he turneth round from him unto another, and saith according to this word, and the people return him word as the first word.

Şi s'a întors dela el ca să vorbească cu altul, şi i -a pus aceleaşi întrebări. Poporul i -a răspuns ca şi întîiaş dată.

31 A nd the words which David hath spoken are heard, and they declare before Saul, and he receiveth him;

Cînd s'au auzit cuvintele rostite de David, au fost spuse înaintea lui Saul, care a trimes să -l caute.

32 a nd David saith unto Saul, `Let no man's heart fall because of him, thy servant doth go, and hath fought with this Philistine.'

David a zis lui Saul:,, Nimeni să nu-şi piardă nădejdea din pricina Filisteanului acestuia! Robul tău va merge să se bată cu el.``

33 A nd Saul saith unto David, `Thou art not able to go unto this Philistine, to fight with him, for a youth thou, and he a man of war from his youth.'

Saul a zis lui David:,, Nu poţi să te duci să te baţi cu Filisteanul acesta, căci tu eşti un copil, şi el este un om războinic din tinereţa lui.``

34 A nd David saith unto Saul, `A shepherd hath thy servant been to his father among the sheep, and the lion hath come -- and the bear -- and hath taken away a sheep out of the drove,

David a zis lui Saul:,, Robul tău păştea oile tatălui său. Şi cînd un leu sau un urs venea să -i ia o oaie din turmă,

35 a nd I have gone out after him, and smitten him, and delivered out of his mouth, and he riseth against me, and I have taken hold on his beard, and smitten him, and put him to death.

alergam după el, îl loveam, şi -i smulgeam oaia din gură. Dacă se ridica împotriva mea, îl apucam de falcă, îl loveam, şi -l omoram.

36 B oth the lion and the bear hath thy servant smitten, and this uncircumcised Philistine hath been as one of them, for he hath reproached the ranks of the living God.'

Aşa a doborît robul tău leul şi ursul; şi cu Filisteanul acesta, cu acest netăiat împrejur, va fi ca şi cu unul din ei, căci a ocărît oştirea Dumnezeului celui viu.``

37 A nd David saith, `Jehovah, who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, He doth deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.' And Saul saith unto David, `Go, and Jehovah is with thee.'

David a mai zis:,, Domnul, care m'a izbăvit din ghiara leului, şi din laba ursului, mă va izbăvi şi din mîna acestui Filistean.`` Şi Saul a zis lui David:,, Du-te, şi Domnul să fie cu tine!``

38 A nd Saul clotheth David with his long robe, and hath put a helmet of brass on his head, and doth clothe him with a coat of mail.

Saul a îmbrăcat pe David cu hainele lui, i -a pus pe cap un coif de aramă, şi l -a îmbrăcat cu o platoşă.

39 A nd David girded his sword above his long robe, and beginneth to go, for he hath not tried; and David saith unto Saul, `I am not able to go with these, for I had not tried;' and David turneth them aside from off him.

David a încins sabia lui Saul peste hainele lui, şi a vrut să meargă, căci nu încercase însă să meargă cu ele. Apoi a zis lui Saul:,, Nu pot să merg cu armătura aceasta, căci nu sînt obicinuit cu ea.`` Şi s'a desbrăcat de ea.

40 A nd he taketh his staff in his hand, and chooseth for him five smooth stones from the brook, and putteth them in the shepherds' habiliments that he hath, even in the scrip, and his sling in his hand, and he draweth nigh unto the Philistine.

Şi -a luat toiagul în mînă, şi -a ales din pîrău cinci pietre netede, şi le -a pus în traista lui de păstor şi în buzunarul hainei. Apoi, cu praştia în mînă, a înaintat împotriva Filisteanului.

41 A nd the Philistine goeth on, going and drawing near unto David, and the man bearing the buckler before him,

Filisteanul s'a apropiat puţin cîte puţin de David, şi omul care -i ducea scutul mergea înaintea lui.

42 a nd the Philistine looketh attentively, and seeth David, and despiseth him, for he was a youth, and ruddy, with a fair appearance.

Filisteanul s'a uitat, şi cînd a zărit pe David, a rîs de el, căci nu vedea în el decît un copil, cu păr bălai şi cu faţa frumoasă.

43 A nd the Philistine saith unto David, `Am I a dog that thou art coming unto me with staves?' and the Philistine revileth David by his gods,

Filisteanul a zis lui David: Ce! sînt cîne, de vii la mine cu toiege?`` Şi, după ce l -a blestemat pe dumnezeii lui,

44 a nd the Philistine saith unto David, `Come unto me, and I give thy flesh to the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the field.'

a adăogat:,, Vino la mine, şi-ţi voi da carnea ta păsărilor cerului şi fiarelor cîmpului.``

45 A nd David saith unto the Philistine, `Thou art coming unto me with sword, and with spear, and with buckler, and I am coming unto thee in the name of Jehovah of Hosts, God of the ranks of Israel, which thou hast reproached.

David a zis Filisteanului:,, Tu vii împotriva mea cu sabie, cu suliţă şi cu pavăză; iar eu vin împotriva ta în Numele Domnului oştirilor, în Numele Dumnezeului oştirii lui Israel, pe care ai ocărît -o.

46 T his day doth Jehovah shut thee up into my hand -- and I have smitten thee, and turned aside thy head from off thee, and given the carcase of the camp of the Philistines this day to the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the earth, and all the earth do know that God is for Israel.

Astăzi Domnul te va da în mînile mele, te voi doborî, şi-ţi voi tăia capul; astăzi voi da stîrvurile taberii Filstenilor păsărilor cerului şi fiarelor pămîntului. Şi tot pămîntul va şti că Israel are un Dumnezeu.

47 a nd all this assembly do know that not by sword and by spear doth Jehovah save, that the battle Jehovah's, and He hath given you into our hand.'

Şi toată mulţimea aceasta va şti că Domnul nu mîntueşte nici prin sabie nici prin suliţă. Căci biruinţa este a Domnului. Şi El vă dă în mînile noastre.``

48 A nd it hath come to pass, that the Philistine hath risen, and goeth, and draweth near to meet David, and David hasteth and runneth to the rank to meet the Philistine,

Îndată ce Filisteanul a pornit să meargă înaintea lui David, David a alergat pe cîmpul de bătaie înaintea Filisteanului.

49 a nd David putteth forth his hand unto the vessel, and taketh thence a stone, and slingeth, and smiteth the Philistine on his forehead, and the stone sinketh into his forehead, and he falleth on his face to the earth.

Şi -a vîrît mîna în traistă, a luat o piatră, şi a aruncat -o cu praştia; a lovit pe Filistean în frunte, şi piatra a intrat în fruntea Filisteanului, care a căzut cu faţa la pămînt.

50 A nd David is stronger than the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smiteth the Philistine, and putteth him to death, and there is no sword in the hand of David,

Astfel, cu o praştie şi cu o piatră, David a fost mai tare decît Filisteanul; l -a trîntit la pămînt şi l -a omorît, fără să aibă sabie în mînă.

51 a nd David runneth and standeth over the Philistine, and taketh his sword, and draweth it out of its sheath, and putteth him to death, and cutteth off with it his head; and the Philistines see that their hero dead, and flee.

A alergat, s'a oprit lîngă Filistean, i -a luat sabia, pe care i -a scos -o din teacă, l -a omorît şi i -a tăiat capul. Filistenii, cînd au văzut că uriaşul lor a murit, au luat -o la fugă.

52 A nd the men of Israel rise -- also Judah -- and shout, and pursue the Philistines till thou enter the valley, and unto the gates of Ekron, and the wounded of the Philistines fall in the way of Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron,

Şi bărbaţii lui Israel şi Iuda au dat chiote, şi au pornit în urmărirea Filistenilor pînă în vale şi pînă la porţile Ecronului. Filistenii, răniţi de moarte, au căzut pe drumul care duce la Şaaraim pînă la Gat şi pînă la Ecron.

53 a nd the sons of Israel turn back from burning after the Philistines, and spoil their camps.

Şi copiii lui Israel s'au întors dela urmărirea Filistenilor, şi le-au jăfuit tabăra.

54 A nd David taketh the head of the Philistine, and bringeth it in to Jerusalem, and his weapons he hath put in his own tent.

David a luat capul Filisteanului şi l -a dus la Ierusalim, şi a pus armele Filisteanului în cortul său.

55 A nd when Saul seeth David going out to meet the Philistine, he hath said unto Abner, head of the host, `Whose son this -- the youth, Abner?' and Abner saith, `Thy soul liveth, O king, I have not known.'

Cînd a văzut Saul pe David mergînd împotriva Filisteanului, a zis lui Abner, căpetenia oştirii:,, Al cui fiu este tînărul acesta, Abner?`` Abner a răspuns:,, Pe sufletul tău, împărate, că nu ştiu.``

56 A nd the king saith, `Ask thou whose son this -- the young man.'

dar al cui fiu este tînărul acesta``, a zis împăratul.

57 A nd when David turneth back from smiting the Philistine, then Abner taketh him and bringeth him in before Saul, and the head of the Philistine in his hand;

Şi cînd s'a întors David după ce omorîse pe Filistean, Abner l -a luat şi l -a adus înaintea lui Saul. David avea în mînă capul Filisteanului.

58 a nd Saul saith unto him, `Whose son thou, O youth?' and David saith, `Son of thy servant Jesse, the Beth-Lehemite.'

Saul i -a zis:,, Al cui fiu eşti, tinere?`` Şi David a răspuns:,, Sînt fiul robului tău Isai, Betleemitul.``
