1 B e not envious of evil men, And desire not to be with them.

Nu pismui pe oamenii cei răi, şi nu dori să fii cu ei;

2 F or destruction doth their heart meditate, And perverseness do their lips speak.

căci inima lor se gîndeşte la prăpăd, şi buzele lor vorbesc nelegiuiri. -

3 B y wisdom is a house builded, And by understanding it establisheth itself.

Prin înţelepciune se înalţă o casă, şi prin pricepere se întăreşte;

4 A nd by knowledge the inner parts are filled, all precious and pleasant wealth.

prin ştiinţă se umplu cămările ei de toate bunătăţile de preţ şi plăcute.

5 M ighty the wise in strength, And a man of knowledge is strengthening power,

Un om înţelept este plin de putere, şi cel priceput îşi oţeleşte vlaga.

6 F or by plans thou makest for thyself war, And deliverance in a multitude of counsellors.

Căci prin măsuri chibzuite cîştigi bătălia, şi prin marele număr al sfetnicilor ai biruinţa. -

7 W isdom high for a fool, In the gate he openeth not his mouth.

Înţelepciunea este prea înaltă pentru cel nebun: el nu va deschide gura la judecată. -

8 W hoso is devising to do evil, Him they call a master of wicked thoughts.

Cine se gîndeşte să facă rău, se cheamă un om plin de răutate. -

9 T he thought of folly sin, And an abomination to man a scorner.

Gîndul celui nebun nu este decît păcat, şi batjocoritorul este o scîrbă pentru oameni. -

10 T hou hast shewed thyself weak in a day of adversity, Straitened is thy power,

Dacă slăbeşti în ziua necazului, mică îţi este puterea. -

11 I f delivering those taken to death, And those slipping to the slaughter -- thou keepest back.

Izbăveşte pe cei tîrîţi la moarte, şi scapă pe ceice sînt aproape să fie junghiaţi. -

12 W hen thou sayest, `Lo, we knew not this.' Is not the Ponderer of hearts He who understandeth? And the Keeper of thy soul He who knoweth? And He hath rendered to man according to his work.

Dacă zici:,, Ah! n'am ştiut!``... Crezi că nu vede Celce cîntăreşte inimile şi Celce veghează asupra sufletului tău? Şi nu va răsplăti El fiecăruia după faptele lui? -

13 E at my son, honey that good, And the honeycomb -- sweet to thy palate.

Fiule, mănîncă miere, căci este bună, şi fagurul de miere este dulce pentru cerul gurii tale.

14 S o the knowledge of wisdom to thy soul, If thou hast found that there is a posterity And thy hope is not cut off.

Tot aşa, şi înţelepciunea este bună pentru sufletul tău: dacă o vei găsi, ai un viitor, şi nu ţi se va tăia nădejdea. -

15 L ay not wait, O wicked one, At the habitation of the righteous. Do not spoil his resting-place.

Nu întinde curse, nelegiuitule, la locuinţa celui neprihănit, şi nu -i turbura odihna.

16 F or seven doth the righteous fall and rise, And the wicked stumble in evil.

Căci cel neprihănit de şapte ori cade, şi se ridică, dar cei răi se prăbuşesc în nenorocire.

17 I n the falling of thine enemy rejoice not, And in his stumbling let not thy heart be joyful,

Nu te bucura de căderea vrăjmaşului tău, şi să nu ţi se veselească inima cînd se poticneşte el,

18 L est Jehovah see, and evil in His eyes, And He hath turned from off him His anger.

ca nu cumva Domnul să vadă, să nu -I placă, şi să-Şi întoarcă mînia dela el. -

19 F ret not thyself at evil doers, Be not envious at the wicked,

Nu te mînia din pricina celor ce fac rău, şi nu pizmui pe cei răi!

20 F or there is not a posterity to the evil, The lamp of the wicked is extinguished.

Căci cel ce face răul n'are niciun viitor, şi lumina celor răi se stinge. -

21 F ear Jehovah, my son, and the king, With changers mix not up thyself,

Fiule, teme-te de Domnul şi de împăratul; şi să nu te amesteci cu cei neastîmpăraţi!

22 F or suddenly doth their calamity rise, And the ruin of them both -- who knoweth!

Căci deodată le va veni pieirea, şi cine poate şti sfîrşitul amîndorora! -

23 T hese also are for the wise: -- To discern faces in judgment is not good.

Iată ce mai spun înţelepţii:,, Nu este bine să ai în vedere faţa oamenilor în judecăţi.`` -

24 W hoso is saying to the wicked, `Thou righteous,' Peoples execrate him -- nations abhor him.

Pe cine zice celui rău:,, Tu eşti bun!`` îl blastămă popoarele, şi -l urăsc neamurile.

25 A nd to those reproving it is pleasant, And on them cometh a good blessing.

Dar celor ce judecă drept le merge bine, şi o mare binecuvîntare vine peste ei. -

26 L ips he kisseth who is returning straightforward words.

Un răspuns bun este ca un sărut pe buze.

27 P repare in an out-place thy work, And make it ready in the field -- go afterwards, Then thou hast built thy house.

Vezi-ţi întîi de treburi afară, îngrijeşte de lucrul cîmpului, şi apoi apucă-te să-ţi zideşti casa. -

28 B e not a witness for nought against thy neighbour, Or thou hast enticed with thy lips.

Nu vorbi în chip uşuratic împotriva aproapelui tău; ori ai vrea să înşeli cu buzele tale? -

29 S ay not, `As he did to me, so I do to him, I render to each according to his work.'

Nu zice:,, Cum mi -a făcut el aşa am să -i fac şi eu, îi vor răsplăti după faptele lui!`` -

30 N ear the field of a slothful man I passed by, And near the vineyard of a man lacking heart.

Am trecut pe lîngă ogorul unui leneş, şi pe lîngă via unui om fără minte.

31 A nd lo, it hath gone up -- all of it -- thorns! Covered its face have nettles, And its stone wall hath been broken down.

Şi era numai spini, acoperit de mărăcini, şi zidul de piatră era prăbuşit.

32 A nd I see -- I -- I do set my heart, I have seen -- I have received instruction,

M'am uitat bine şi cu luare aminte, şi am tras învăţătură din ce am văzut.

33 A little sleep -- a little slumber -- A little folding of the hands to lie down.

Să mai dorm puţin, să mai aţipesc puţin, să mai încrucişez mînile puţin ca să mă odihnesc!``...

34 A nd thy poverty hath come a traveller, And thy want as an armed man!

Şi sărăcia vine peste tine pe neaşteptate, ca un hoţ, şi lipsa, ca un om înarmat.
