1 A nd these the names of the sons of Israel who are coming into Egypt with Jacob; a man and his household have they come;

Iată numele fiilor lui Israel, intraţi în Egipt; au intrat cu Iacov fiecare cu familia lui:

2 R euben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Iuda,

3 I ssachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

Isahar, Zabulon, Beniamin,

4 D an, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

Dan, Neftali, Gad şi Aşer.

5 A nd all the persons coming out of the thigh of Jacob are seventy persons; as to Joseph, he was in Egypt.

Sufletele ieşite din coapsele lui Iacov erau şaptezeci de toate. Iosif era atunci în Egipt.

6 A nd Joseph dieth, and all his brethren, and all that generation;

Iosif a murit, şi toţi fraţii lui, şi toată vîrsta aceea de oameni.

7 a nd the sons of Israel have been fruitful, and they teem, and multiply, and are very very mighty, and the land is filled with them.

Fiii lui Israel s'au înmulţit, s'au mărit, au crescut şi au ajuns foarte puternici. Şi s'a umplut ţara de ei.

8 A nd there riseth a new king over Egypt, who hath not known Joseph,

Peste Egipt s'a ridicat un nou împărat, care nu cunoscuse pe Iosif.

9 a nd he saith unto his people, `Lo, the people of the sons of Israel more numerous and mighty than we;

El a zis poporului său:,, Iată că poporul copiilor lui Israel este mai mare şi mai puternic decît noi.

10 g ive help! let us act wisely concerning it, lest it multiply, and it hath come to pass, when war happeneth, that it hath been joined, even it, unto those hating us, and hath fought against us, and hath gone out up of the land.'

Veniţi să ne arătăm dibaci faţă de el, ca să nu crească, pentru ca nu cumva, dacă se va întîmpla un război, să se unească şi el cu vrăjmaşii noştri, să ne bată şi să iasă apoi din ţară.``

11 A nd they set over it princes of tribute, so as to afflict it with their burdens, and it buildeth store-cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses;

Şi au pus peste ei isprăvnicei, ca să -i asuprească prin munci grele. Astfel a zidit el cetăţile Pitom şi Ramses, ca să slujească de hambare lui Faraon.

12 a nd as they afflict it, so it multiplieth, and so it breaketh forth, and they are vexed because of the sons of Israel;

Dar cu cît îl asupreau mai mult, cu atît se înmulţea şi creştea; şi s'au scîrbit de copiii lui Israel.

13 a nd the Egyptians cause the sons of Israel to serve with rigour,

Atunci Egiptenii au adus pe copiii lui Israel la o aspră robie.

14 a nd make their lives bitter in hard service, in clay, and in brick, and in every of service in the field; all their service in which they have served with rigour.

Le-au făcut viaţa amară prin lucrări grele de lut şi cărămizi, şi prin tot felul de lucrări depe cîmp: în toate muncile acestea pe cari -i sileau să le facă, erau fără nici un pic de milă.

15 A nd the king of Egypt speaketh to the midwives, the Hebrewesses, (of whom the name of the one Shiphrah, and the name of the second Puah),

Împăratul Egiptului a poruncit moaşelor Evreilor, numite una Şifra, şi cealaltă Pua,

16 a nd saith, `When ye cause the Hebrew women to bear, and have looked on the children; if it a son -- then ye have put him to death; and if it a daughter -- then she hath lived.'

şi le -a zis:,, Cînd veţi împlini slujba de moaşe pe lîngă femeile Evreilor, şi le veţi vedea pe scaunul de naştere, dacă este băiat, să -l omorîţi; iar dacă este fată, s'o lăsaţi să trăiască.``

17 A nd the midwives fear God, and have not done as the king of Egypt hath spoken unto them, and keep the lads alive;

Dar moaşele s'au temut de Dumnezeu, şi n'au făcut ce le poruncise împăratul Egiptului: ci au lăsat pe copiii de parte bărbătească să trăiască.

18 a nd the king of Egypt calleth for the midwives, and saith to them, `Wherefore have ye done this thing, and keep the lads alive?'

Împăratul Egiptului a chemat pe moaşe, şi le -a zis:,, Pentruce aţi făcut lucrul acesta, şi aţi lăsat pe copiii de parte bărbătească să trăiască?``

19 A nd the midwives say unto Pharaoh, `Because the Hebrew women not as the Egyptian women, for they lively; before the midwife cometh in unto them -- they have borne!'

Moaşele au răspuns lui Faraon:,, Pentrucă femeile Evreilor nu sînt ca Egiptencele; ele sînt vînjoase şi nasc înainte de venirea moaşei.``

20 A nd God doth good to the midwives, and the people multiply, and are very mighty;

Dumnezeu a făcut bine moaşelor; şi poporul s'a înmulţit şi a ajuns foarte mare la număr.

21 a nd it cometh to pass, because the midwives have feared God, that He maketh for them households;

Pentrucă moaşele se temuseră de Dumnezeu, Dumnezeu le -a făcut case.

22 a nd Pharaoh layeth a charge on all his people, saying, `Every son who is born -- into the River ye do cast him, and every daughter ye do keep alive.'

Atunci Faraon a dat următoarea poruncă la tot poporul lui:,, Să aruncaţi în rîu pe orice băiat care se va naşte, şi să lăsaţi pe toate fetele să trăiască.``
