1 A nd yet, I pray thee, O Job, Hear my speech and all my words give ear.

Acum dar, Iov, ascultă cuvîntările mele, ia aminte la toate cuvintele mele!

2 L o, I pray thee, I have opened my mouth, My tongue hath spoken in the palate.

Iată, deschid gura, şi mi se mişcă limba în cerul gurii.

3 O f the uprightness of my heart my sayings, And knowledge have my lips clearly spoken.

Cu curăţie de inimă voi vorbi, buzele mele vor spune adevărul curat:

4 T he Spirit of God hath made me, And the breath of the Mighty doth quicken me.

Duhul lui Dumnezeu m'a făcut, şi suflarea Celui Atotputernic îmi dă viaţă.

5 I f thou art able -- answer me, Set in array before me -- station thyself.

Dacă poţi, răspunde-mi, apără-ţi pricina, fii gata!

6 L o, I, according to thy word, for God, From the clay I -- I also, have been formed.

Înaintea lui Dumnezeu eu sînt semenul tău, şi eu ca şi tine am fost făcut din noroi.

7 L o, my terror doth not frighten thee, And my burden on thee is not heavy.

Astfel frica de mine nu te va turbura, şi greutatea mea nu te va copleşi.

8 S urely -- thou hast said in mine ears, And the sounds of words I hear:

Dar tu ai spus în auzul meu, şi am auzit sunetul cuvintelor tale:

9 ` Pure I, without transgression, Innocent I, and I have no iniquity.

Sînt curat, sînt fără păcat, sînt fără prihană, nu este fărădelege în mine.

10 L o, occasions against me He doth find, He doth reckon me for an enemy to Him,

Şi Dumnezeu caută pricină de ură împotriva mea, mă socoteşte vrăjmaş al Lui;

11 H e doth put in the stocks my feet, He doth watch all my paths.'

îmi pune picioarele în butuci, îmi pîndeşte toate mişcările.`

12 L o, this thou hast not been righteous, I answer thee, that greater is God than man.

Îţi voi răspunde că aici n'ai dreptate, căci Dumnezeu este mai mare decît omul.

13 W herefore against Him hast thou striven, When all His matters He answereth not?

Vrei dar să te cerţi cu El, pentrucă nu dă socoteală fiecăruia de faptele Lui?

14 F or once doth God speak, and twice, (He doth not behold it.)

Dumnezeu vorbeşte însă, cînd într'un fel, cînd într'altul. dar omul nu ia seama.

15 I n a dream -- a vision of night, In the falling of deep sleep on men, In slumberings on a bed.

El vorbeşte prin visuri, prin vedenii de noapte, cînd oamenii sînt cufundaţi într'un somn adînc, cînd dorm în patul lor.

16 T hen He uncovereth the ear of men, And for their instruction sealeth:

Atunci El le dă înştiinţări, şi le întipăreşte învăţăturile Lui,

17 T o turn aside man doing, And pride from man He concealeth.

ca să abată pe om de la rău, şi să -l ferească de mîndrie,

18 H e keepeth back his soul from corruption, And his life from passing away by a dart.

ca să -i păzească sufletul de groapă şi viaţa de loviturile săbiei.

19 A nd he hath been reproved With pain on his bed, And the strife of his bones enduring.

Şi prin durere este mustrat omul în culcuşul lui, cînd o luptă necurmată îi frămîntă oasele.

20 A nd his life hath nauseated bread, And his soul desirable food.

Atunci îi este greaţă de pîne, chiar şi de bucatele cele mai alese.

21 H is flesh is consumed from being seen, And high are his bones, they were not seen!

Carnea i se prăpădeşte şi piere, oasele cari nu i se vedeau rămîn goale;

22 A nd draw near to the pit doth his soul, And his life to those causing death.

sufletul i se apropie de groapă, şi viaţa de vestitorii morţii.

23 I f there is by him a messenger, An interpreter -- one of a thousand, To declare for man his uprightness:

Dar dacă se găseşte un înger mijlocitor pentru el, unul din miile acelea, cari vestesc omului calea pe care trebuie s'o urmeze,

24 T hen He doth favour him and saith, `Ransom him from going down to the pit, I have found an atonement.'

Dumnezeu Se îndură de el şi zice îngerului:, Izbăveşte -l, ca să nu se pogoare în groapă; am găsit un preţ de răscumpărare pentru el!`

25 F resher his flesh than a child's, He returneth to the days of his youth.

Şi atunci carnea lui se face mai fragedă ca în copilărie, se întoarce la zilele tinereţei lui.

26 H e maketh supplication unto God, And He accepteth him. And he seeth His face with shouting, And He returneth to man His righteousness.

Se roagă lui Dumnezeu, şi Dumnezeu îi este binevoitor, îl lasă să -I vadă Faţa cu bucurie, şi -i dă înapoi nevinovăţia.

27 H e looketh on men, and saith, `I sinned, And uprightness I have perverted, And it hath not been profitable to me.

Atunci el cîntă înaintea oamenilor, şi zice:, Am păcătuit, am călcat dreptatea, şi n'am fost pedepsit după faptele mele;

28 H e hath ransomed my soul From going over into the pit, And my life on the light looketh.'

Dumnezeu mi -a izbăvit sufletul ca să nu intre în groapă, şi viaţa mea vede lumina!`

29 L o, all these doth God work, Twice -- thrice with man,

Iată, acestea le face Dumnezeu, de două ori, de trei ori, omului,

30 T o bring back his soul from the pit, To be enlightened with the light of the living.

ca să -l ridice din groapă, ca să -l lumineze cu lumina celor vii.

31 A ttend, O Job, hearken to me, Keep silent, and I -- I do speak.

Ia aminte, Iov, şi ascultă-mă! Taci, şi voi vorbi!

32 I f there are words -- answer me, Speak, for I have a desire to justify thee.

Dacă ai ceva de spus, răspunde-mi! Vorbeşte, căci aş vrea să-ţi dau dreptate.

33 I f there are not -- hearken thou to me, Keep silent, and I teach thee wisdom.

Dacă n'ai nimic de zis, ascultă-mă! Taci, şi te voi învăţa înţelepciunea.``
