1 A nd it cometh to pass, after the death of Saul, that David hath returned from smiting the Amalekite, and David dwelleth in Ziklag two days,

După moartea lui Saul, David, dupăce bătuse pe Amaleciţi, se întorsese de două zile la Ţiclag.

2 a nd it cometh to pass, on the third day, that lo, a man hath come in out of the camp from Saul, and his garments rent, and earth on his head; and it cometh to pass, in his coming in unto David, that he falleth to the earth, and doth obeisance.

A treia zi, a venit un om din tabăra lui Saul, cu hainele sfîşiate şi cu capul presărat cu ţărînă. Cînd a ajuns în faţa lui David, s'a aruncat cu faţa la pămînt, şi s'a închinat.

3 A nd David saith to him, `Whence comest thou?' and he saith unto him, `Out of the camp of Israel I have escaped.'

David i -a zis:,, De unde vii?`` Şi el i -a răspuns:,, Am scăpat din tabăra lui Israel.``

4 A nd David saith unto him, `What hath been the matter? declare, I pray thee, to me.' And he saith, that `The people hath fled from the battle, and also a multitude hath fallen of the people, and they die; and also Saul and Jonathan his son have died.'

David i -a zis:,, Spune-mi ce s'a întîmplat?`` Şi el a răspuns:,, Poporul a fugit de pe cîmpul de bătaie, şi un mare număr de oameni au căzut şi au perit; chiar şi Saul şi fiul său Ionatan, au murit.``

5 A nd David saith unto the youth who is declaring to him, `How hast thou known that Saul and Jonathan his son dead?'

David a zis tînărului care -i aducea aceste veşti:,, De unde ştii că Saul şi fiul său Ionatan au murit?``

6 A nd the youth who is declaring to him saith, I happened to meet in mount Gilboa, and lo, Saul is leaning on his spear; and lo, the chariots and those possessing horses have followed him;

Şi tînărul care -i aducea aceste veşti, a răspuns:,, Am venit din întîmplare pe muntele Ghilboa; şi Saul sta rezămat în suliţa lui, şi carăle şi călăreţii erau aproape să -l ajungă.

7 a nd he turneth behind him, and seeth me, and calleth unto me, and I say, Here I.

Întorcîndu-se, m'a văzut şi m'a chemat. Eu am zis:, Iată-mă!`

8 A nd he saith to me, Who thou? and I say unto him, An Amalekite I.'

Şi el mi -a zis:, Cine eşti?` I-am răspuns:, Eu sînt Amalecit.`

9 ` And he saith unto me, Stand, I pray thee, over me, and put me to death, for seized me hath the arrow, for all my soul still in me.

Şi a zis:, Apropie-te dar, şi omoară-mă; căci m'a apucat ameţeala, măcar că sînt încă plin de viaţă.`

10 A nd I stand over him, and put him to death, for I knew that he doth not live after his falling, and I take the crown which on his head, and the bracelet which on his arm, and bring them in unto my lord hither.'

M'am apropiat de el, şi l-am omorît, ştiind bine că n'avea să mai rămînă cu viaţă în urma înfrîngerii. Am luat cununa împărătească de pe capul lui şi brăţara pe care o avea la braţ, şi le-am adus aici domnului meu.``

11 A nd David taketh hold on his garments, and rendeth them, and also all the men who with him,

David şi -a apucat hainele şi le -a sfîşiat, şi toţi oamenii cari erau lîngă el au făcut acelaş lucru.

12 a nd they mourn, and weep, and fast till the evening, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Jehovah, and for the house of Israel, because they have fallen by the sword.

Au jălit, au plîns şi au postit pînă seara, de durere pentru Saul, pentru fiul său Ionatan, pentru poporul Domnului, fiindcă fuseseră tăiaţi cu sabia.

13 A nd David saith unto the youth who is declaring to him, `Whence thou?' and he saith, `Son of a sojourner, an Amalekite, I.'

David a zis tînărului care -i adusese aceste veşti:,, De unde eşti?`` Şi el a răspuns:,, Sînt fiul unui străin, unui Amalecit.``

14 A nd David saith unto him, `How wast thou not afraid to put forth thy hand to destroy the anointed of Jehovah?'

David i -a zis:,, Cum nu ţi -a fost frică să pui mîna... pe unsul Domnului şi să -l omori?``

15 A nd David calleth to one of the youths, and saith, `Draw nigh -- fall upon him;' and he smiteth him, and he dieth;

Şi David a chemat pe unul din oamenii lui, şi a zis:,, Apropie-te, şi omoară -l!`` Omul acela a lovit pe Amalecit, care a murit.

16 a nd David saith unto him, `Thy blood on thine own head, for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I -- I put to death the anointed of Jehovah.'

Şi David i -a zis:,, Sîngele tău să cadă asupra capului tău, căci gura ta a mărturisit împotriva ta, fiindcă ai zis:, Am omorît pe unsul Domnului!``

17 A nd David lamenteth with this lamentation over Saul, and over Jonathan his son;

Iată cîntarea de jale pe care a alcătuit -o David pentru Saul şi fiul său Ionatan,

18 a nd he saith to teach the sons of Judah `The Bow;' lo, it is written on the book of the Upright: --

şi pe care a poruncit s'o înveţe copiii lui Iuda. Este numită cîntarea arcului şi se află scrisă în Cartea Dreptului.

19 ` The Roebuck, O Israel, On thy high places wounded; How have the mighty fallen!

Fala ta, Israele, zace ucisă pe dealurile tale! Cum au căzut vitejii!

20 D eclare not in Gath, Proclaim not the tidings in the streets of Ashkelon, Lest they rejoice -- The daughters of the Philistines, Lest they exult -- The daughters of the Uncircumcised!

Nu spuneţi lucrul acesta în Gat, nu răspîndiţi vestea aceasta în uliţele Ascalonului, ca să nu se bucure fetele Filistenilor, ca să nu se laude fetelor celor netăiaţi... împrejur.

21 M ountains of Gilboa! No dew nor rain be on you, And fields of heave-offerings! For there hath become loathsome The shield of the mighty, The shield of Saul -- without the anointed with oil.

Munţi din Ghilboa! Nici rouă, nici ploaie să nu cadă pe voi! Să nu fie pe voi nici cîmpii cari să dea pîrgă pentru darurile de mîncare! Căci acolo au fost aruncate scuturile vitejilor, scutul lui Saul, ca şi cînd n'ar fi fost uns... cu untdelemn.

22 F rom the blood of the wounded, From the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan Hath not turned backward; And the sword of Saul doth not return empty.

Dela sîngele celor răniţi, dela grăsimea celor mai voinici, arcul lui Ionatan nu da înapoi niciodată, şi sabia lui Saul nu se învîrtea niciodată în vînt.

23 S aul and Jonathan! They are loved and pleasant in their lives, And in their death they have not been parted. Than eagles they have been lighter, Than lions they have been mightier!

Saul şi Ionatan, cari s'au plăcut şi s'au iubit în timpul vieţii lor, n'au fost despărţiţi nici la moarte; erau mai uşori decît vulturii, mai tari decît leii.

24 D aughters of Israel! for Saul weep ye, Who is clothing you scarlet with delights. Who is lifting up ornaments of gold on your clothing.

Fiicele lui Israel! plîngeţi pe Saul, care vă îmbrăca în stacojiu şi alte podoabe, care vă punea găteli de aur pe hainele voastre!

25 H ow have the mighty fallen In the midst of the battle! Jonathan! on thy high places wounded!

Cum au căzut vitejii în mijlocul luptei! Cum a murit Ionatan pe dealurile tale!

26 I am in distress for thee, my brother Jonathan, Very pleasant wast thou to me; Wonderful was thy love to me, Above the love of women!

Mă doare după tine, frate Ionatane! Tu erai plăcerea mea; dragostea ta pentru mine era minunată: mai pe sus de dragostea femeiască.

27 H ow have the mighty fallen, Yea, the weapons of war perish!'

Cum au căzut vitejii! Cum li s'au perdut armele!``
