1 A nd Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `Fear not, nor be affrighted, take with thee all the people of war, and rise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land,

Domnul a zis lui Iosua:,, Nu te teme, şi nu te spăimînta! Ia cu tine pe toţi oamenii de război, scoală-te, suie-te împotriva cetăţii Ai. Iată că îţi dau în mînile tale pe împăratul din Ai şi pe poporul lui, cetatea lui şi ţara lui.

2 a nd thou hast done to Ai and to her king as thou hast done to Jericho and to her king; only, its spoil and its cattle ye spoil for yourselves; set for thee an ambush for the city at its rear.'

Să faci cetăţii Ai cum ai făcut Ierihonului şi împăratului lui: să păstraţi pentru voi numai prada de război şi vitele. Pune nişte oameni la pîndă înapoia cetăţii``.

3 A nd Joshua riseth, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai, and Joshua chooseth thirty thousand men, mighty ones of valour, and sendeth them away by night,

Iosua s'a sculat cu toţi oamenii de război ca să se suie împotriva cetăţii Ai. A ales treizeci de mii de bărbaţi viteji, pe cari i -a pornit noaptea,

4 a nd commandeth them, saying, `See, ye are liers in wait against the city, at the rear of the city, ye go not very far off from the city, and all of you have been prepared,

şi le -a dat următoarea poruncă:,, Ascultaţi! Să vă puneţi la pîndă înapoia cetăţii; să nu vă depărtaţi mult de cetate, şi toţi să fiţi gata.

5 a nd I and all the people who with me draw near unto the city, and it hath come to pass when they come out to meet us as at the first, and we have fled before them,

Iar eu şi tot poporul care este cu mine ne vom apropia de cetate. Şi cînd vor ieşi înaintea noastră, ca întîiaş dată, noi o s'o luăm la fugă dinaintea lor.

6 a nd they have come out after us till we have drawn them out of the city, for they say, They are fleeing before us as at the first, and we have fled before them,

Ei ne vor urmări pînă cînd îi vom trage departe de cetate, căci vor zice:, Fug dinaitea noastră, ca întîiaş dată!` Şi vom fugi dinaintea lor.

7 a nd ye rise from the ambush, and have occupied the city, and Jehovah your God hath given it into your hand;

Voi să ieşiţi atunci dela pîndă şi să puneţi mîna pe cetate, şi Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, o va da în mînile voastre.

8 a nd it hath been, when ye capture the city, ye burn the city with fire, according to the word of Jehovah ye do, see, I have commanded you.'

Dupăce veţi lua cetatea, să -i puneţi foc, să faceţi cum a zis Domnul: aceasta este porunca pe care v'o dau``.

9 A nd Joshua sendeth them away, and they go unto the ambush, and abide between Bethel and Ai, on the west of Ai; and Joshua lodgeth on that night in the midst of the people.

Iosua i -a pornit, şi s'au dus de s'au aşezat la pîndă între Betel şi Ai, la apus de Ai. Iar Iosua a petrecut noaptea aceea în mijlocul poporului.

10 A nd Joshua riseth early in the morning, and inspecteth the people, and goeth up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai;

Iosua s'a sculat dis de dimineaţă, a cercetat poporul, şi a pornit împotriva cetăţii Ai, în fruntea poporului, el şi bătrînii lui Israel.

11 a nd all the people of war who with him have gone up, and draw nigh and come in over-against the city, and encamp on the north of Ai; and the valley between him and Ai.

Toţi oamenii de război cari erau cu el s'au suit şi s'au apropiat de cetate; cînd au ajuns în faţa cetăţii, au tăbărît la miază noapte de Ai, de care erau despărţiţi prin vale.

12 A nd he taketh about five thousand men, and setteth them an ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west of the city;

Iosua a luat aproape cinci mii de oameni, şi i -a pus la pîndă între Betel şi Ai, la apus de cetate.

13 a nd they set the people, all the camp which on the north of the city, and its rear on the west of the city, and Joshua goeth on that night into the midst of the valley.

Dupăce s'a aşezat toată tabăra la miază noapte de cetate, şi cei de pîndă la apus de cetate, Iosua a înaintat în noaptea aceea în mijlocul văii.

14 A nd it cometh to pass, when the king of Ai seeth, that hasten, and rise early, and go out do the men of the city to meet Israel for battle, he and all his people, at the appointed season, at the front of the plain, and he hath not known that an ambush against him, on the rear of the city.

Cînd a văzut împăratul cetăţii Ai lucrul acesta, oamenii din Ai s'au sculat în grabă disdedimineaţă, şi au ieşit înaintea lui Israel, ca să -l bată. Împăratul s'a îndreptat, cu tot poporul lui, spre un loc hotărît, înspre cîmpie, şi nu ştia că înapoia cetăţii o mînă de oameni stăteau la pîndă împotriva lui.

15 A nd Joshua and all Israel stricken before them, and flee the way of the wilderness,

Iosua şi tot Israelul s'au prefăcut că sînt bătuţi, şi au fugit pe drumul dinspre pustie.

16 a nd all the people who in the city are called to pursue after them, and they pursue after Joshua, and are drawn away out of the city,

Atunci tot poporul care era în cetate s'a strîns ca să -i urmărească. Au urmărit pe Iosua şi au fost traşi departe din cetate.

17 a nd there hath not been left a man in Ai and Bethel who hath not gone out after Israel, and they leave the city open, and pursue after Israel.

N'a rămas niciun om în Ai şi în Betel care să nu fi ieşit împotriva lui Israel. Au lăsat cetatea deschisă, şi au urmărit pe Israel.

18 A nd Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `Stretch out with the javelin which in thy hand towards Ai, for into thy hand I give it;' and Joshua stretcheth out with the javelin which in his hand toward the city,

Domnul a zis lui Iosua:,,Întinde spre Ai suliţa pe care o ai în mînă, căci am s'o dau în mîna ta!`` Şi Iosua a întins spre cetate suliţa pe care o avea în mînă.

19 a nd the ambush hath risen haste, out of its place, and they run at the stretching out of his hand, and go into the city, and capture it, and hasten, and burn the city with fire.

Deîndată ce şi -a întins mîna, bărbaţii, cari stăteau la pîndă, au ieşit repede din locul unde erau; au pătruns în cetate, au luat -o, şi s'au grăbit de i-au pus foc.

20 A nd the men of Ai look behind them, and see, and lo, the smoke of the city hath gone up unto the heavens, and there hath not been in them power to flee hither and thither -- and the people who are fleeing to the wilderness have turned against the pursuer, --

Oamenii din Ai, uitîndu-se înapoi, au văzut fumul cetăţii suindu-se spre cer, şi n'au mai putut să scape în nici o parte. Poporul care fugea spre pustie s'a întors împotriva celor ce -l urmăreau;

21 a nd Joshua and all Israel have seen that the ambush hath captured the city, and that the smoke of the city hath gone up, and they turn back and smite the men of Ai;

căci Iosua şi tot Israelul, văzînd cetatea luată de cei ce stăteau la pîndă, şi fumul cetăţii suindu-se în sus, s'au întors şi au bătut pe oamenii din Ai.

22 a nd these have come out from the city to meet them, and they are in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that, and they smite them till he hath not left to them a remnant and escaped one;

Ceilalţi deasemenea le-au ieşit înainte din cetate, şi oamenii din Ai au fost înconjuraţi de Israel din toate părţile. Israel i -a bătut, fără să lase unul cu viaţă, nici vreun fugar;

23 a nd the king of Ai they caught alive, and bring him near unto Joshua.

pe împăratul din Ai, l-au prins viu, şi l-au adus la Iosua.

24 A nd it cometh to pass, at Israel's finishing to slay all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them (and they fall all of them by the mouth of the sword till their consumption), that all Israel turn back to Ai, and smite it by the mouth of the sword;

După ce a isprăvit Israel de ucis pe toţi locuitorii din Ai, în cîmp şi în pustie, unde îi urmăriseră ei, şi după ce toţi au fost trecuţi în totul prin ascuţişul săbiei, tot Israelul s'a întors la Ai şi a trecut cetatea prin ascuţişul săbiei.

25 a nd all who fall during the day, of men and of women, are twelve thousand -- all men of Ai.

În totul au fost douăsprezece mii de inşi ucişi în ziua aceea, bărbaţi şi femei, toţi oameni din Ai.

26 A nd Joshua hath not brought back his hand which he stretched out with the javelin till that he hath devoted all the inhabitants of Ai;

Iosua nu şi -a tras mîna pe care o ţinea întinsă cu suliţa, pînă ce toţi locuitorii au fost nimiciţi cu desăvîrşire.

27 o nly, the cattle and the spoil of that city have Israel spoiled for themselves, according to the word of Jehovah which He commanded Joshua.

Israel a păstrat pentru sine doar vitele şi prada din cetatea aceasta, după porunca pe care o dăduse lui Iosua Domnul.

28 A nd Joshua burneth Ai, and maketh it a heap age-during -- a desolation unto this day;

Iosua a ars cetatea Ai, şi a făcut din ea pentru totdeauna un morman de dărîmături, care se vede pînă în ziua de azi.

29 a nd the king of Ai he hath hanged on the tree till even-time, and at the going in of the sun hath Joshua commanded, and they take down his carcase from the tree, and cast it unto the opening of the gate of the city, and raise over it a great heap of stones till this day.

A spînzurat de un lemn pe împăratul din Ai, şi l -a lăsat pe lemn pînă seara. La apusul soarelui, Iosua a poruncit să i se pogoare trupul de pe lemn; l-au aruncat la intrarea porţii cetăţii, şi au ridicat pe el o mare grămadă de pietre, care este pînă în ziua de azi.

30 T hen doth Joshua build an altar to Jehovah, God of Israel, in mount Ebal,

Atunci Iosua a zidit un altar Domnului, Dumnezeului lui Israel, pe muntele Ebal,

31 a s Moses, servant of Jehovah, commanded the sons of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses -- an altar of whole stones, over which he hath not waved iron -- and they cause to go up upon it burnt-offerings to Jehovah, and sacrifice peace-offerings;

cum poruncise copiilor lui Israel Moise, robul Domnului, şi cum este scris în cartea legii lui Moise: era un altar de pietre necioplite, peste cari nu trecuse ferul. Pe altarul acesta au adus Domnului arderi de tot, şi jertfe de mulţămiri.

32 a nd he writeth there on the stones the copy of the law of Moses, which he hath written in the presence of the sons of Israel.

Şi acolo Iosua a scris pe pietre o copie a legii pe care o scrisese Moise înaintea copiilor lui Israel.

33 A nd all Israel, and its elders, and authorities, and its judges, are standing on this side and on that of the ark, over-against the priests, the Levites, bearing the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, as well the sojourner as the native, half of them over-against mount Gerizim, and the half of them over-against mount Ebal, as Moses servant of Jehovah commanded to bless the people of Israel at the first.

Tot Israelul, bătrînii, mai marii oastei şi judecătorii lui, stăteau de amîndouă părţile chivotului, înaintea preoţilor, din neamul Leviţilor, cari duceau chivotul legămîntului Domnului; erau de faţă atît străinii cît şi copiii lui Israel, jumătate în dreptul muntelui Garizim, şi jumătate în dreptul muntelui Ebal, după porunca pe care o dăduse mai înainte Moise, robul Domnului, ca să binecuvinteze pe poporul lui Israel.

34 A nd afterwards he hath proclaimed all the words of the law, the blessing and the reviling, according to all that is written in the book of the law;

Iosua a citit apoi toate cuvintele legii, binecuvîntările şi blestemurile, după cum este scris în cartea legii.

35 t here hath not been a thing of all that Moses commanded which Joshua hath not proclaimed before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the infants, and the sojourner who is going in their midst.

N'a rămas nimic din tot ce poruncise Moise, pe care să nu -l fi citit Iosua în faţa întregei adunări a lui Israel, în faţa femeilor, copiilor şi străinilor cari mergeau în mijlocul lor.
