1 A nd Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `Fear not, nor be affrighted, take with thee all the people of war, and rise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land,

Jehová dijo a Josué: «No temas ni desmayes. Toma contigo toda la gente de guerra, levántate y sube a Hai. Mira, yo he entregado en tus manos al rey de Hai, a su pueblo, a su ciudad y a su tierra.

2 a nd thou hast done to Ai and to her king as thou hast done to Jericho and to her king; only, its spoil and its cattle ye spoil for yourselves; set for thee an ambush for the city at its rear.'

Harás con Hai y con su rey como hiciste con Jericó y su rey; sólo que ahora tomaréis para vosotros su botín y sus bestias. Pondrás, pues, emboscadas detrás de la ciudad.»

3 A nd Joshua riseth, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai, and Joshua chooseth thirty thousand men, mighty ones of valour, and sendeth them away by night,

Entonces se levantaron Josué y toda la gente de guerra para subir contra Hai. Escogió Josué treinta mil hombres fuertes, a los cuales envió de noche

4 a nd commandeth them, saying, `See, ye are liers in wait against the city, at the rear of the city, ye go not very far off from the city, and all of you have been prepared,

con esta orden: «Atended, pondréis una emboscada detrás de la ciudad. No os alejaréis mucho de la ciudad y estaréis todos dispuestos.

5 a nd I and all the people who with me draw near unto the city, and it hath come to pass when they come out to meet us as at the first, and we have fled before them,

Yo y todo el pueblo que está conmigo nos acercaremos a la ciudad, y cuando salgan ellos contra nosotros, como hicieron antes, huiremos delante de ellos.

6 a nd they have come out after us till we have drawn them out of the city, for they say, They are fleeing before us as at the first, and we have fled before them,

Ellos saldrán tras nosotros, hasta que los alejemos de la ciudad, pues dirán: “Huyen de nosotros como la primera vez.” Huiremos, entonces, delante de ellos.

7 a nd ye rise from the ambush, and have occupied the city, and Jehovah your God hath given it into your hand;

Luego vosotros os levantaréis de la emboscada y tomaréis la ciudad, pues Jehová, vuestro Dios, la entregará en vuestras manos.

8 a nd it hath been, when ye capture the city, ye burn the city with fire, according to the word of Jehovah ye do, see, I have commanded you.'

Cuando la hayáis tomado, le prenderéis fuego. Haréis conforme a la palabra de Jehová. Mirad que os lo he mandado.»

9 A nd Joshua sendeth them away, and they go unto the ambush, and abide between Bethel and Ai, on the west of Ai; and Joshua lodgeth on that night in the midst of the people.

Entonces Josué los envió; ellos se fueron a la emboscada y se pusieron entre Bet-el y Hai, al occidente de Hai. Josué se quedó aquella noche en medio del pueblo.

10 A nd Joshua riseth early in the morning, and inspecteth the people, and goeth up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai;

Josué se levantó muy de mañana, pasó revista al pueblo y subió contra Hai, al frente del pueblo, junto con los ancianos de Israel.

11 a nd all the people of war who with him have gone up, and draw nigh and come in over-against the city, and encamp on the north of Ai; and the valley between him and Ai.

Toda la gente de guerra que con él estaba subió y se acercó; llegaron delante de la ciudad y acamparon al norte de Hai. El valle estaba entre él y Hai.

12 A nd he taketh about five thousand men, and setteth them an ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west of the city;

Tomó como cinco mil hombres y los puso en una emboscada entre Bet-el y Hai, al occidente de la ciudad.

13 a nd they set the people, all the camp which on the north of the city, and its rear on the west of the city, and Joshua goeth on that night into the midst of the valley.

Así dispusieron al pueblo: todo el campamento al norte de la ciudad, y su emboscada al occidente de la ciudad. Aquella noche Josué avanzó hasta la mitad del valle.

14 A nd it cometh to pass, when the king of Ai seeth, that hasten, and rise early, and go out do the men of the city to meet Israel for battle, he and all his people, at the appointed season, at the front of the plain, and he hath not known that an ambush against him, on the rear of the city.

Aconteció que, al verlo el rey de Hai, él y su pueblo se apresuraron, madrugaron, y al tiempo señalado, los hombres de la ciudad salieron a combatir contra Israel frente al Arabá, no sabiendo que estaba puesta una emboscada a espaldas de la ciudad.

15 A nd Joshua and all Israel stricken before them, and flee the way of the wilderness,

Josué y todo Israel se fingieron vencidos y huyeron delante de ellos por el camino del desierto.

16 a nd all the people who in the city are called to pursue after them, and they pursue after Joshua, and are drawn away out of the city,

Todo el pueblo que estaba en Hai se juntó para perseguirlos, y al ir tras Josué, se alejaron así de la ciudad.

17 a nd there hath not been left a man in Ai and Bethel who hath not gone out after Israel, and they leave the city open, and pursue after Israel.

No quedó ningún hombre en Hai ni en Bet-el que no saliera tras Israel, y por seguir a Israel dejaron la ciudad abierta.

18 A nd Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `Stretch out with the javelin which in thy hand towards Ai, for into thy hand I give it;' and Joshua stretcheth out with the javelin which in his hand toward the city,

Entonces Jehová dijo a Josué: «Extiende hacia Hai la lanza que tienes en tu mano, porque yo la entregaré en tus manos.» Josué extendió hacia la ciudad la lanza que tenía en su mano.

19 a nd the ambush hath risen haste, out of its place, and they run at the stretching out of his hand, and go into the city, and capture it, and hasten, and burn the city with fire.

Se levantaron prontamente de su lugar los que estaban en la emboscada, corrieron luego que él alzó su mano, entraron en la ciudad, la tomaron y se apresuraron a prenderle fuego.

20 A nd the men of Ai look behind them, and see, and lo, the smoke of the city hath gone up unto the heavens, and there hath not been in them power to flee hither and thither -- and the people who are fleeing to the wilderness have turned against the pursuer, --

Cuando los hombres de Hai volvieron el rostro y vieron el humo de la ciudad que subía al cielo, no pudieron huir ni a una parte ni a otra, porque el pueblo que iba huyendo hacia el desierto se volvió contra quienes los perseguían.

21 a nd Joshua and all Israel have seen that the ambush hath captured the city, and that the smoke of the city hath gone up, and they turn back and smite the men of Ai;

Josué y todo Israel, al ver que los de la emboscada habían tomado la ciudad, y que el humo de la ciudad subía, se volvieron y atacaron a los de Hai.

22 a nd these have come out from the city to meet them, and they are in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that, and they smite them till he hath not left to them a remnant and escaped one;

Los otros salieron de la ciudad a su encuentro, y así quedaron encerrados en medio de Israel, los unos por un lado y los otros por el otro. Y los hirieron hasta que no quedó ninguno de ellos que escapara.

23 a nd the king of Ai they caught alive, and bring him near unto Joshua.

Pero tomaron vivo al rey de Hai y lo llevaron ante Josué.

24 A nd it cometh to pass, at Israel's finishing to slay all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them (and they fall all of them by the mouth of the sword till their consumption), that all Israel turn back to Ai, and smite it by the mouth of the sword;

Cuando los israelitas acabaron de matar a todos los habitantes de Hai en el campo y en el desierto, hasta donde los habían perseguido, y todos habían caído a filo de espada hasta ser consumidos, todos los israelitas volvieron a Hai, y también la hirieron a filo de espada.

25 a nd all who fall during the day, of men and of women, are twelve thousand -- all men of Ai.

El número de los que cayeron aquel día, entre hombres y mujeres, fue de doce mil, todos los de Hai.

26 A nd Joshua hath not brought back his hand which he stretched out with the javelin till that he hath devoted all the inhabitants of Ai;

Porque Josué no retiró la mano que había extendido con la lanza hasta que hubo destruido por completo a todos los habitantes de Hai.

27 o nly, the cattle and the spoil of that city have Israel spoiled for themselves, according to the word of Jehovah which He commanded Joshua.

Los israelitas tomaron para sí las bestias y el botín de la ciudad, conforme a la palabra que Jehová había mandado a Josué.

28 A nd Joshua burneth Ai, and maketh it a heap age-during -- a desolation unto this day;

Josué quemó a Hai y la redujo a un montón de escombros, desolada para siempre hasta hoy.

29 a nd the king of Ai he hath hanged on the tree till even-time, and at the going in of the sun hath Joshua commanded, and they take down his carcase from the tree, and cast it unto the opening of the gate of the city, and raise over it a great heap of stones till this day.

Al rey de Hai lo colgó de un madero hasta caer la noche, y cuando el sol se puso, mandó Josué que quitaran del madero su cuerpo y lo echaran a la puerta de la ciudad. Luego levantaron sobre él un gran montón de piedras, que permanece hasta hoy. Lectura de la Ley en el monte Ebal

30 T hen doth Joshua build an altar to Jehovah, God of Israel, in mount Ebal,

Entonces Josué edificó un altar a Jehová, Dios de Israel, en el monte Ebal,

31 a s Moses, servant of Jehovah, commanded the sons of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses -- an altar of whole stones, over which he hath not waved iron -- and they cause to go up upon it burnt-offerings to Jehovah, and sacrifice peace-offerings;

como Moisés, siervo de Jehová, lo había mandado a los hijos de Israel y como está escrito en el libro de la ley de Moisés: un altar de piedras enteras sin labrar. Ofrecieron sobre él holocaustos a Jehová y sacrificaron ofrendas de paz.

32 a nd he writeth there on the stones the copy of the law of Moses, which he hath written in the presence of the sons of Israel.

También escribió allí sobre las piedras una copia de la ley de Moisés, la cual escribió delante de los hijos de Israel.

33 A nd all Israel, and its elders, and authorities, and its judges, are standing on this side and on that of the ark, over-against the priests, the Levites, bearing the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, as well the sojourner as the native, half of them over-against mount Gerizim, and the half of them over-against mount Ebal, as Moses servant of Jehovah commanded to bless the people of Israel at the first.

Todo Israel, tanto los extranjeros como los naturales, con sus ancianos, oficiales y jueces, estaba de pie a uno y otro lado del Arca, en presencia de los sacerdotes levitas que llevaban el Arca del pacto de Jehová. La mitad de ellos estaba hacia el monte Gerizim y la otra mitad hacia el monte Ebal, de la manera que Moisés, siervo de Jehová, lo había mandado antes, para que primero bendijeran al pueblo de Israel.

34 A nd afterwards he hath proclaimed all the words of the law, the blessing and the reviling, according to all that is written in the book of the law;

Después de esto leyó todas las palabras de la Ley, las bendiciones y las maldiciones, conforme a todo lo que está escrito en el libro de la Ley.

35 t here hath not been a thing of all that Moses commanded which Joshua hath not proclaimed before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the infants, and the sojourner who is going in their midst.

No hubo palabra alguna de todo cuanto mandó Moisés que Josué no hiciera leer delante de toda la congregación de Israel, de las mujeres, los niños y los extranjeros que habitaban entre ellos.
