1 B e not envious of evil men, And desire not to be with them.

2 F or destruction doth their heart meditate, And perverseness do their lips speak.

perché il loro cuore medita rapine, le loro labbra emettono malvagità.

3 B y wisdom is a house builded, And by understanding it establisheth itself.

La casa si costruisce con la saggezza e si rende stabile con l’intelligenza;

4 A nd by knowledge the inner parts are filled, all precious and pleasant wealth.

mediante la scienza se ne riempiono le stanze di ogni specie di beni preziosi e gradevoli.

5 M ighty the wise in strength, And a man of knowledge is strengthening power,

L’uomo saggio è pieno di forza, chi ha scienza accresce la sua potenza;

6 F or by plans thou makest for thyself war, And deliverance in a multitude of counsellors.

infatti, con sagge direttive potrai condurre bene la guerra, e la vittoria sta nel gran numero dei consiglieri.

7 W isdom high for a fool, In the gate he openeth not his mouth.

La saggezza è troppo in alto per lo stolto; egli non apre mai la bocca alla porta della città.

8 W hoso is devising to do evil, Him they call a master of wicked thoughts.

Chi pensa a fare il male sarà chiamato esperto in malizia.

9 T he thought of folly sin, And an abomination to man a scorner.

I disegni dello stolto sono peccato, il beffardo è l’abominio degli uomini.

10 T hou hast shewed thyself weak in a day of adversity, Straitened is thy power,

Se ti scoraggi nel giorno dell’avversità, la tua forza è poca.

11 I f delivering those taken to death, And those slipping to the slaughter -- thou keepest back.

Libera quelli che sono condotti a morte, e salva quelli che, vacillando, vanno al supplizio.

12 W hen thou sayest, `Lo, we knew not this.' Is not the Ponderer of hearts He who understandeth? And the Keeper of thy soul He who knoweth? And He hath rendered to man according to his work.

Se dici: «Ma noi non ne sapevamo nulla!», Colui che pesa i cuori non lo vede forse? Colui che veglia su di te non lo sa forse? E non renderà egli a ciascuno secondo le sue opere?

13 E at my son, honey that good, And the honeycomb -- sweet to thy palate.

Figlio mio, mangia il miele perché è buono; un favo di miele sarà dolce al tuo palato.

14 S o the knowledge of wisdom to thy soul, If thou hast found that there is a posterity And thy hope is not cut off.

Così conosci la saggezza per il tuo bene! Se la trovi, c’è un avvenire, e la tua speranza non sarà delusa.

15 L ay not wait, O wicked one, At the habitation of the righteous. Do not spoil his resting-place.

O empio, non tendere insidie alla casa del giusto! Non devastare il luogo dove riposa!

16 F or seven doth the righteous fall and rise, And the wicked stumble in evil.

Perché il giusto cade sette volte e si rialza, ma gli empi sono travolti dalla sventura.

17 I n the falling of thine enemy rejoice not, And in his stumbling let not thy heart be joyful,

Quando il tuo nemico cade, non ti rallegrare; quand’è rovesciato, il tuo cuore non ne gioisca,

18 L est Jehovah see, and evil in His eyes, And He hath turned from off him His anger.

perché il Signore non lo veda e gli dispiaccia e non distolga l’ira sua da lui.

19 F ret not thyself at evil doers, Be not envious at the wicked,

Non t’irritare a motivo di chi fa il male e non portare invidia agli empi,

20 F or there is not a posterity to the evil, The lamp of the wicked is extinguished.

perché non c’è avvenire per il malvagio; la lucerna degli empi sarà spenta.

21 F ear Jehovah, my son, and the king, With changers mix not up thyself,

Figlio mio, temi il Signore e il re, e non mischiarti con gli uomini turbolenti;

22 F or suddenly doth their calamity rise, And the ruin of them both -- who knoweth!

la loro rovina sopraggiungerà improvvisa, e chi sa la triste fine dei loro anni?

23 T hese also are for the wise: -- To discern faces in judgment is not good.

Anche queste sono massime dei saggi. Non è bene, in giudizio, avere riguardi personali.

24 W hoso is saying to the wicked, `Thou righteous,' Peoples execrate him -- nations abhor him.

Chi dice all’empio: «Tu sei giusto», i popoli lo malediranno, lo esecreranno le nazioni.

25 A nd to those reproving it is pleasant, And on them cometh a good blessing.

Ma quelli che sanno punire se ne troveranno bene, e su loro scenderanno benedizione e prosperità.

26 L ips he kisseth who is returning straightforward words.

Da’ un bacio sulle labbra chi dà una risposta giusta.

27 P repare in an out-place thy work, And make it ready in the field -- go afterwards, Then thou hast built thy house.

Metti in ordine i tuoi affari di fuori, metti in buono stato i tuoi campi, poi ti fabbricherai la casa.

28 B e not a witness for nought against thy neighbour, Or thou hast enticed with thy lips.

Non testimoniare senza motivo contro il tuo prossimo; vorresti forse ingannare con le tue parole?

29 S ay not, `As he did to me, so I do to him, I render to each according to his work.'

Non dire: «Come ha fatto a me così farò a lui; renderò a costui secondo la sua azione».

30 N ear the field of a slothful man I passed by, And near the vineyard of a man lacking heart.

Passai presso il campo del pigro e presso la vigna dell’uomo privo di senno;

31 A nd lo, it hath gone up -- all of it -- thorns! Covered its face have nettles, And its stone wall hath been broken down.

ed ecco, le spine vi crescevano dappertutto, i rovi ne coprivano il suolo e il muro di cinta era in rovina.

32 A nd I see -- I -- I do set my heart, I have seen -- I have received instruction,

Considerai la cosa e mi posi a riflettere; e da quel che vidi trassi una lezione:

33 A little sleep -- a little slumber -- A little folding of the hands to lie down.

dormire un po’, sonnecchiare un po’, incrociare un po’ le mani per riposare…

34 A nd thy poverty hath come a traveller, And thy want as an armed man!

e la tua povertà verrà come un ladro e la tua miseria, come un uomo armato.
