1 I the man hath seen affliction By the rod of His wrath.

Io sono l’uomo che ha visto l’afflizione sotto la verga del suo furore.

2 M e He hath led, and causeth to go darkness, and without light.

Egli mi ha condotto, mi ha fatto camminare nelle tenebre e non nella luce.

3 S urely against me He turneth back, He turneth His hand all the day.

Sì, contro di me di nuovo volge la sua mano tutto il giorno.

4 H e hath worn out my flesh and my skin. He hath broken my bones.

Egli ha consumato la mia carne e la mia pelle, ha spezzato le mie ossa.

5 H e hath built up against me, And setteth round poverty and weariness.

Ha costruito contro di me e mi ha circondato di veleno e di affanno.

6 I n dark places He hath caused me to dwell, As the dead of old.

Mi ha fatto abitare in luoghi tenebrosi, come quelli che sono morti da lungo tempo.

7 H e hath hedged me about, and I go not out, He hath made heavy my fetter.

Mi ha circondato di un muro, perché non esca; mi ha caricato di pesanti catene.

8 A lso when I call and cry out, He hath shut out my prayer.

Anche quando grido e chiamo aiuto, egli chiude l’accesso alla mia preghiera.

9 H e hath hedged my ways with hewn work, My paths He hath made crooked.

Egli mi ha sbarrato la via con blocchi di pietra, ha sconvolto i miei sentieri.

10 A bear lying in wait He to me, A lion in secret hiding-places.

È stato per me come un orso in agguato, come un leone in luoghi nascosti.

11 M y ways He is turning aside, and He pulleth me in pieces, He hath made me a desolation.

Mi ha sviato dal mio cammino e mi ha squarciato, mi ha reso desolato.

12 H e hath trodden His bow, And setteth me up as a mark for an arrow.

Ha teso il suo arco, mi ha posto come bersaglio delle sue frecce.

13 H e hath caused to enter into my reins The sons of His quiver.

Mi ha fatto penetrare nelle reni le frecce della sua faretra.

14 I have been a derision to all my people, Their song all the day.

Io sono diventato lo scherno di tutto il mio popolo, la sua canzone di tutto il giorno.

15 H e hath filled me with bitter things, He hath filled me wormwood.

Egli mi ha saziato d’amarezza, mi ha abbeverato d’assenzio.

16 A nd He breaketh with gravel my teeth, He hath covered me with ashes.

Mi ha spezzato i denti con la ghiaia, mi ha affondato nella cenere.

17 A nd Thou castest off from peace my soul, I have forgotten prosperity.

Tu mi hai allontanato dalla pace, io ho dimenticato il benessere.

18 A nd I say, Perished hath my strength and my hope from Jehovah.

Io ho detto: «È sparita la mia fiducia, non ho più speranza nel Signore!»

19 R emember my affliction and my mourning, Wormwood and gall!

Ricòrdati della mia afflizione, della mia vita raminga, dell’assenzio e del veleno!

20 R emember well, and bow down doth my soul in me.

Io me ne ricordo sempre, e ne sono intimamente prostrato.

21 T his I turn to my heart -- therefore I hope.

Ecco ciò che voglio richiamare alla mente, ciò che mi fa sperare:

22 T he kindnesses of Jehovah! For we have not been consumed, For not ended have His mercies.

è una grazia del Signore che non siamo stati completamente distrutti; le sue compassioni infatti non sono esaurite,

23 N ew every morning, abundant thy faithfulness.

si rinnovano ogni mattina. Grande è la tua fedeltà!

24 M y portion Jehovah, hath my soul said, Therefore I hope for Him.

«Il Signore è la mia parte», io dico, «perciò spererò in lui».

25 G ood Jehovah to those waiting for Him, To the soul seeketh Him.

Il Signore è buono con quelli che sperano in lui, con chi lo cerca.

26 G ood! when one doth stay and stand still For the salvation of Jehovah.

È bene aspettare in silenzio la salvezza del Signore.

27 G ood for a man that he beareth a yoke in his youth.

È bene per l’uomo portare il giogo della sua giovinezza.

28 H e sitteth alone, and is silent, For He hath laid upon him.

Si sieda solitario e stia in silenzio quando il Signore glielo impone!

29 H e putteth in the dust his mouth, if so be there is hope.

Metta la sua bocca nella polvere! Forse c’è ancora speranza.

30 H e giveth to his smiter the cheek, He is filled with reproach.

Porga la guancia a chi lo percuote, si sazi pure di offese!

31 F or the Lord doth not cast off to the age.

Il Signore infatti non respinge per sempre,

32 F or though He afflicted, yet He hath pitied, According to the abundance of His kindness.

ma se affligge, ha pure compassione, secondo la sua immensa bontà;

33 F or He hath not afflicted with His heart, Nor doth He grieve the sons of men.

poiché non è volentieri che egli umilia e affligge i figli dell’uomo.

34 T o bruise under one's feet any bound ones of earth,

Quando uno schiaccia sotto i piedi tutti i prigionieri della terra,

35 T o turn aside the judgment of a man, Over-against the face of the Most High,

quando uno vìola i diritti di un uomo in presenza dell’Altissimo,

36 T o subvert a man in his cause, the Lord hath not approved.

quando si fa torto a qualcuno nella sua causa, il Signore non lo vede forse?

37 W ho this -- he hath said, and it is, the Lord hath not commanded ?

Chi mai dice una cosa che si avveri, se il Signore non l’ha comandato?

38 F rom the mouth of the Most High Go not forth the evils and the good.

Il male e il bene non procedono forse dalla bocca dell’Altissimo?

39 W hat -- sigh habitually doth a living man, A man for his sin?

Perché si rammarica la creatura vivente? L’uomo vive malgrado i suoi peccati!

40 W e search our ways, and investigate, And turn back unto Jehovah.

Esaminiamo la nostra condotta, valutiamola, e torniamo al Signore!

41 W e lift up our heart on the hands unto God in the heavens.

Eleviamo le mani e i nostri cuori a Dio nei cieli!

42 W e -- we have transgressed and rebelled, Thou -- Thou hast not forgiven.

«Noi abbiamo peccato, siamo stati ribelli, e tu non hai perdonato.

43 T hou hast covered Thyself with anger, And dost pursue us; Thou hast slain -- Thou hast not pitied.

Ti sei avvolto nella tua ira e ci hai inseguiti; tu hai ucciso senza pietà.

44 T hou hast covered Thyself with a cloud, So that prayer doth not pass through.

Ti sei avvolto in una nuvola, perché la preghiera non potesse raggiungerti;

45 O ffscouring and refuse Thou dost make us In the midst of the peoples.

tu hai fatto di noi delle spazzature, dei rifiuti, in mezzo ai popoli.

46 O pened against us their mouth have all our enemies.

Tutti i nostri nemici aprono larga la bocca contro di noi.

47 F ear and a snare hath been for us, Desolation and destruction.

Ci sono toccati il terrore, la fossa, la desolazione e la rovina».

48 R ivulets of water go down my eye, For the destruction of the daughter of my people.

I miei occhi si sciolgono in fiumi di lacrime per la rovina della figlia del mio popolo.

49 M ine eye is poured out, And doth not cease without intermission,

L’occhio mio piange senza posa, senza alcun riposo,

50 T ill Jehovah looketh and seeth from the heavens,

finché dal cielo il Signore non guardi e non veda il nostro stato.

51 M y eye affecteth my soul, Because of all the daughters of my city.

L’occhio mio mi tormenta per tutte le figlie della mia città.

52 H unted me sore as a bird have my enemies without cause.

Quelli che mi sono nemici senza motivo mi hanno dato la caccia come a un uccello.

53 T hey have cut off in a pit my life, And they cast a stone against me.

Hanno voluto annientare la mia vita nella fossa, mi hanno gettato pietre addosso.

54 F lowed have waters over my head, I have said, I have been cut off.

Le acque salivano fin sopra il mio capo; io dicevo: «È finita per me!»

55 I called Thy name, O Jehovah, from the lower pit.

Io ho invocato il tuo nome, o Signore, dal fondo della fossa.

56 M y voice Thou hast heard, Hide not Thine ear at my breathing -- at my cry.

Tu hai udito la mia voce; non chiudere l’orecchio al mio sospiro, al mio grido!

57 T hou hast drawn near in the day I call Thee, Thou hast said, Fear not.

Nel giorno che io ti ho invocato ti sei avvicinato; tu hai detto: «Non temere!»

58 T hou hast pleaded, O Lord, the pleadings of my soul, Thou hast redeemed my life.

O Signore, tu hai difeso la mia causa, tu hai redento la mia vita.

59 T hou hast seen, O Jehovah, my overthrow, Judge Thou my cause.

O Signore, tu vedi il torto che mi è fatto, giudica tu la mia causa!

60 T hou hast seen all their vengeance, All their thoughts of me.

Tu vedi tutto il loro rancore, tutte le loro macchinazioni contro di me.

61 T hou hast heard their reproach, O Jehovah, All their thoughts against me,

Tu odi i loro insulti, Signore, tutte le loro macchinazioni contro di me,

62 T he lips of my withstanders, Even their meditation against me all the day.

il linguaggio dei miei avversari e ciò che meditano contro di me tutto il giorno!

63 T heir sitting down, and their rising up, Behold attentively, I their song.

Guarda! Quando si siedono, quando si alzano, io sono la loro canzone.

64 T hou returnest to them the deed, O Jehovah, According to the work of their hands.

Tu li retribuirai, Signore, secondo l’opera delle loro mani.

65 T hou givest to them a covered heart, Thy curse to them.

Darai loro indurimento di cuore, la tua maledizione.

66 T hou pursuest in anger, and destroyest them, From under the heavens of Jehovah!

Li inseguirai nella tua ira e li sterminerai sotto i cieli del Signore.
