1 A nd lo, a man of God hath come from Judah, by the word of Jehovah, unto Beth-El, and Jeroboam is standing by the altar -- to make perfume;

Ed ecco, un uomo di Dio giunse da Giuda a Betel per ordine del Signore, mentre Geroboamo stava presso l’altare per bruciare incenso;

2 a nd he calleth against the altar, by the word of Jehovah, and saith, `Altar! altar! thus said Jehovah, Lo, a son is born to the house of David -- Josiah his name -- and he hath sacrificed on thee the priests of the high places who are making perfume on thee, and bones of man are burnt on thee.'

e per ordine del Signore si mise a gridare contro l’altare e a dire: «Altare, altare! Così dice il Signore: “Ecco, nascerà alla casa di Davide un figlio, di nome Giosia, il quale sacrificherà su di te i sacerdoti degli alti luoghi che su di te bruciano incenso, e si arderanno su di te ossa umane”».

3 A nd he hath given on that day a sign, saying, `This the sign that Jehovah hath spoken, Lo, the altar is rent, and the ashes poured forth that on it.'

E quello stesso giorno diede un segno miracoloso dicendo: «Questo è il segno che il Signore ha parlato: ecco, l’altare si spaccherà, e la cenere che vi è sopra si disperderà».

4 A nd it cometh to pass, at the king's hearing the word of the man of God that he calleth against the altar in Beth-El, that Jeroboam putteth forth his hand from off the altar, saying, `Catch him;' and his hand is dried up that he hath put forth against him, and he is not able to bring it back unto him,

Quando il re Geroboamo udì la parola che l’uomo di Dio aveva gridata contro l’altare di Betel, stese la mano dall’alto dell’altare e disse: «Pigliatelo!» Ma la mano che Geroboamo aveva stesa contro di lui rimase paralizzata, e non poté più tirarla indietro;

5 a nd the altar is rent, and the ashes poured forth from the altar, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of Jehovah.

l’altare si spaccò e la cenere che vi era sopra si disperse, secondo il segno che l’uomo di Dio aveva dato per ordine del Signore.

6 A nd the king answereth and saith unto the man of God, `Appease, I pray thee, the face of Jehovah thy God, and pray for me, and my hand doth come back unto me;' and the man of God appeaseth the face of Jehovah, and the hand of the king cometh back unto him, and it is as at the beginning.

Allora il re si rivolse all’uomo di Dio e gli disse: «Ti prego, implora la grazia del Signore, del tuo Dio, e prega per me affinché mi sia resa la mano». E l’uomo di Dio implorò la grazia del Signore, e il re riebbe la sua mano, che tornò com’era prima.

7 A nd the king speaketh unto the man of God, `Come in with me to the house, and refresh thyself, and I give to thee a gift.'

Il re disse all’uomo di Dio: «Vieni con me a casa; ti ristorerai, e io ti farò un regalo».

8 A nd the man of God saith unto the king, `If thou dost give to me the half of thine house, I do not go in with thee, nor do I eat bread, nor do I drink water, in this place;

Ma l’uomo di Dio rispose al re: «Anche se tu mi dessi la metà della tua casa, io non entrerò da te e non mangerò pane né berrò acqua in questo luogo,

9 f or so He commanded me by the word of Jehovah, saying, Thou dost not eat bread nor drink water, nor turn back in the way that thou hast come.'

poiché questo è l’ordine che mi è stato dato dal Signore: “Tu non vi mangerai pane né berrai acqua, e non tornerai per la strada che avrai fatta all’andata”».

10 A nd he goeth on in another way, and hath not turned back in the way in which he came in unto Beth-El.

Così egli se ne andò per un’altra strada, e non tornò per quella che aveva fatta venendo a Betel. Disubbidienza e punizione del profeta

11 A nd a certain aged prophet is dwelling in Beth-El, and his son cometh and recounteth to him all the deed that the man of God hath done to-day in Beth-El, the words that he hath spoken unto the king, -- yea, they recount them to their father.

C’era un vecchio profeta che abitava a Betel; e uno dei suoi figli venne a raccontargli tutte le cose che l’uomo di Dio aveva fatte in quel giorno a Betel e le parole che aveva dette al re. Quando il padre udì il suo racconto,

12 A nd their father saith unto them, `Where this -- the way he hath gone?' and his sons see the way that the man of God hath gone who came from Judah.

disse ai suoi figli: «Per quale via se n’è andato?», poiché i suoi figli avevano visto la via per la quale se n’era andato l’uomo di Dio venuto da Giuda.

13 A nd he saith unto his sons, `Saddle for me the ass,' and they saddle for him the ass, and he rideth on it,

Egli disse ai suoi figli: «Sellatemi l’asino». Quelli gli sellarono l’asino ed egli vi montò su,

14 a nd goeth after the man of God, and findeth him sitting under the oak, and saith unto him, `Art thou the man of God who hast come from Judah?' and he saith, `I.'

seguì l’uomo di Dio e lo trovò seduto sotto il terebinto, e gli disse: «Sei tu l’uomo di Dio venuto da Giuda?» Egli rispose: «Sono io».

15 A nd he saith unto him, `Come with me to the house, and eat bread.'

Allora il vecchio profeta gli disse: «Vieni con me a casa mia a mangiare».

16 A nd he saith, `I am not able to turn back with thee, and to go in with thee, nor do I eat bread or drink with thee water in this place,

Ma egli rispose: «Io non posso tornare indietro con te né entrare in casa tua, e non mangerò pane né berrò acqua con te in questo luogo;

17 f or a word unto me by the word of Jehovah, Thou dost not eat bread nor drink there water, thou dost not turn back to go in the way in which thou camest.'

poiché mi è stato detto, per ordine del Signore: “In quel luogo tu non mangerai pane, né berrai acqua, e non tornerai per la strada che avrai fatta all’andata”».

18 A nd he saith to him, `I also a prophet like thee, and a messenger spake unto me by the word of Jehovah, saying, Bring him back with thee unto thy house, and he doth eat bread and drink water;' -- he hath lied to him.

L’altro gli disse: «Anch’io sono profeta come te; e un angelo mi ha parlato per ordine del Signore, dicendo: “Riportalo con te in casa tua, perché mangi del pane e beva dell’acqua”». Egli mentiva.

19 A nd he turneth back with him, and eateth bread in his house, and drinketh water.

Così l’uomo di Dio tornò indietro con l’altro, e mangiò del pane e bevve dell’acqua in casa di lui.

20 A nd it cometh to pass -- they are sitting at the table -- and a word of Jehovah is unto the prophet who brought him back,

Mentre sedevano a tavola, la parola del Signore fu rivolta al profeta che aveva fatto tornare indietro l’altro;

21 a nd he calleth unto the man of God who came from Judah, saying, `Thus said Jehovah, Because that thou hast provoked the mouth of Jehovah, and hast not kept the command that Jehovah thy God charged thee,

ed egli gridò all’uomo di Dio che era venuto da Giuda: «Così parla il Signore: “Poiché tu ti sei ribellato all’ordine del Signore e non hai osservato il comandamento che il Signore, tuo Dio, t’aveva dato,

22 a nd turnest back and dost eat bread and drink water in the place of which He said unto thee, Thou dost not eat bread nor drink water -- thy carcase cometh not in unto the burying-place of thy fathers.'

e sei tornato indietro e hai mangiato del pane e bevuto dell’acqua nel luogo del quale egli t’aveva detto: ‘Non vi mangiare del pane e non vi bere dell’acqua’, il tuo cadavere non entrerà nella tomba dei tuoi padri”».

23 A nd it cometh to pass, after his eating bread, and after his drinking, that he saddleth for him the ass, for the prophet whom he had brought back,

Quando l’uomo di Dio ebbe mangiato e bevuto, il vecchio profeta, che lo aveva fatto tornare indietro, gli sellò l’asino.

24 a nd he goeth, and a lion findeth him in the way, and putteth him to death, and his carcase is cast in the way, and the ass is standing near it, and the lion is standing near the carcase.

L’uomo di Dio se ne andò, e un leone lo incontrò per strada e lo uccise. Il suo cadavere rimase steso sulla strada; l’asino se ne stava presso di lui, e il leone pure presso il cadavere.

25 A nd lo, men are passing by, and see the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing near the carcase, and they come and speak in the city in which the old prophet is dwelling.

Allora passarono degli uomini che videro il cadavere steso sulla strada e il leone che stava vicino al cadavere, e vennero a riferire ciò nella città dove abitava il vecchio profeta.

26 A nd the prophet who brought him back out of the way heareth and saith, `It the man of God who provoked the mouth of Jehovah, and Jehovah giveth him to the lion, and it destroyeth him, and putteth him to death, according to the word of Jehovah that he spake to him.'

Il profeta che aveva fatto tornare indietro l’uomo di Dio, udito ciò, disse: «È l’uomo di Dio, che è stato ribelle all’ordine del Signore; perciò il Signore l’ha dato in balìa di un leone, che l’ha sbranato e ucciso, secondo la parola che il Signore gli aveva detta».

27 A nd he speaketh unto his sons saying, `Saddle for me the ass,' and they saddle.

Poi si rivolse ai suoi figli e disse loro: «Sellatemi l’asino». E quelli glielo sellarono.

28 A nd he goeth and findeth his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion are standing near the carcase -- the lion hath not eaten the carcase nor destroyed the ass.

Egli andò, trovò il cadavere steso sulla strada e l’asino e il leone che stavano presso il cadavere; il leone non aveva divorato il cadavere né sbranato l’asino.

29 A nd the prophet taketh up the carcase of the man of God, and placeth it on the ass, and bringeth it back, and the old prophet cometh in unto the city to mourn and to bury him,

Il profeta prese il cadavere dell’uomo di Dio, lo pose sull’asino e lo portò indietro; e il vecchio profeta rientrò in città per piangerlo e per dargli sepoltura.

30 a nd he placeth his carcase in his own grave, and they mourn for him, `Oh, my brother!'

Depose il cadavere nella propria tomba; ed egli e i suoi figli lo piansero, dicendo: «Ahi, fratello mio!»

31 A nd it cometh to pass, after his burying him, that he speaketh unto his sons, saying, `At my death -- ye have buried me in the burying-place in which the man of God is buried; near his bones place my bones;

E quando l’ebbe seppellito, il vecchio profeta disse ai suoi figli: «Quando sarò morto, seppellitemi nella tomba dov’è sepolto l’uomo di Dio; ponete le mie ossa accanto alle sue.

32 f or the word certainly cometh to pass that he called by the word of Jehovah concerning the altar which Beth-El, and concerning all the houses of the high places that in cities of Samaria.'

Poiché la parola da lui gridata per ordine del Signore, contro l’altare di Betel e contro tutti i santuari degli alti luoghi che sono nelle città di Samaria, si verificherà certamente».

33 A fter this thing Jeroboam hath not turned from his evil way, and turneth back, and maketh of the extremities of the people priests of high places; he who is desirous he consecrateth his hand, and he is of the priests of the high places.

Dopo questo fatto, Geroboamo non abbandonò la sua via malvagia; istituì anzi nuovi sacerdoti degli alti luoghi, prendendoli qua e là dal popolo; chiunque voleva era da lui consacrato e diventava sacerdote degli alti luoghi.

34 A nd in this thing is the sin of the house of Jeroboam, even to cut off, and to destroy from off the face of the ground.

Quella fu, per la casa di Geroboamo, un’occasione di peccato, che attirò su di lei la distruzione e lo sterminio dalla faccia della terra.
