1 A nd there is a word of Jehovah unto Jonah son of Amittai, saying:

La parola del Signore fu rivolta a Giona, figlio di Amittai, in questi termini:

2 ` Rise, go unto Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim against it that their wickedness hath come up before Me.'

«Àlzati, va’ a Ninive, la gran città, e proclama contro di lei che la loro malvagità è salita fino a me».

3 A nd Jonah riseth to flee to Tarshish from the face of Jehovah, and goeth down Joppa, and findeth a ship going Tarshish, and he giveth its fare, and goeth down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the face of Jehovah.

Ma Giona si mise in viaggio per fuggire a Tarsis, lontano dalla presenza del Signore. Scese a Iafo, dove trovò una nave diretta a Tarsis e, pagato il prezzo del suo viaggio, si imbarcò per andare con loro a Tarsis, lontano dalla presenza del Signore.

4 A nd Jehovah hath cast a great wind on the sea, and there is a great tempest in the sea, and the ship hath reckoned to be broken;

Il Signore scatenò un gran vento sul mare, e vi fu sul mare una tempesta così forte che la nave era sul punto di sfasciarsi.

5 a nd the mariners are afraid, and cry each unto his god, and cast the goods that in the ship into the sea, to make light of them; and Jonah hath gone down unto the sides of the vessel, and he lieth down, and is fast asleep.

I marinai ebbero paura e invocarono ciascuno il proprio dio e gettarono a mare il carico di bordo, per alleggerire la nave. Giona, invece, era sceso in fondo alla nave, si era coricato e dormiva profondamente.

6 A nd the chief of the company draweth near to him, and saith to him, `What -- to thee, O sleeper? rise, call unto thy God, it may be God doth bethink himself of us, and we do not perish.'

Il capitano gli si avvicinò e gli disse: «Che fai qui? Dormi? Àlzati, invoca il tuo dio! Forse egli si darà pensiero di noi e non periremo».

7 A nd they say each unto his neighbour, `Come, and we cast lots, and we know on whose account this evil on us.' And they cast lots, and the lot falleth on Jonah.

Poi si dissero l’un l’altro: «Venite, tiriamo a sorte e sapremo per causa di chi ci capita questa disgrazia». Tirarono a sorte e la sorte cadde su Giona.

8 A nd they say unto him, `Declare to us, we pray thee, on what account this evil on us? what thine occupation, and whence comest thou? what thy country, seeing thou art not of this people?'

Allora gli dissero: «Spiegaci dunque per causa di chi ci capita questa disgrazia! Qual è il tuo mestiere? Da dove vieni? Qual è il tuo paese? A quale popolo appartieni?»

9 A nd he saith unto them, `A Hebrew I, and Jehovah, God of the heavens, I am reverencing, who made the sea and the dry land.'

Egli rispose loro: «Sono Ebreo e temo il Signore, Dio del cielo, che ha fatto il mare e la terraferma».

10 A nd the men fear a great fear, and say unto him, `What this thou hast done!' for the men have known that from the face of Jehovah he is fleeing, for he hath told them.

Allora quegli uomini furono presi da grande spavento e gli domandarono: «Perché hai fatto questo?» Quegli uomini infatti sapevano che egli fuggiva lontano dalla presenza del Signore, perché egli li aveva messi al corrente della cosa.

11 A nd they say unto him, `What do we do to thee that the sea may cease from us, for the sea is more and more tempestuous?'

Poi gli dissero: «Che dobbiamo fare di te perché il mare si calmi per noi?» Il mare infatti si faceva sempre più tempestoso.

12 A nd he saith unto them, `Lift me up, and cast me into the sea, and the sea doth cease from you; for I know that on my account this great tempest upon you.'

Egli rispose: «Prendetemi e gettatemi in mare, e il mare si calmerà per voi; perché io so che questa gran tempesta vi piomba addosso per causa mia».

13 A nd the men row to turn back unto the dry land, and are not able, for the sea is more and more tempestuous against them.

Tuttavia quegli uomini remavano con forza per raggiungere la riva; ma non riuscivano, perché il mare si faceva sempre più tempestoso e minaccioso.

14 A nd they cry unto Jehovah, and say, `We pray Thee, O Jehovah, let us not, we pray Thee, perish for this man's life, and do not lay on us innocent blood, for Thou, Jehovah, as Thou hast pleased, Thou hast done.'

Allora gridarono al Signore e dissero: « Signore, non lasciarci perire per risparmiare la vita di quest’uomo e non accusarci del sangue innocente; poiché tu, Signore, hai fatto come ti è piaciuto».

15 A nd they lift up Jonah, and cast him into the sea, and the sea ceaseth from its raging;

Poi presero Giona, lo gettarono in mare e la furia del mare si calmò.

16 a nd the men fear Jehovah -- a great fear, and sacrifice a sacrifice to Jehovah, and vow vows.

Allora quegli uomini furono presi da un grande timore del Signore; offrirono un sacrificio al Signore e fecero dei voti.

17 A nd Jehovah appointeth a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah is in the bowels of the fish three days and three nights.

Il Signore fece venire un gran pesce per inghiottire Giona. Giona rimase nel ventre del pesce tre giorni e tre notti.
